What Do Civil Engineers Do?

Ғылым және технология

If you look around, civil engineering is everywhere! Meet three civil engineers whose work is having a real impact on people's lives. Whether involved in projects underground, on huge structures or meeting the water needs of developing communities, these engineers are making a difference. See if you have what it takes to be a civil engineer.

hello sumaiya, i hope you get this message. i am dealing with the same issue hear. literally i have a final tomorrow and i haven’t studied anything. i’m trying to find a purpose. civil engineering is not about yourself only. it’s you contributing in the community to built a healthy and safe environment. we are as much important as doctors. we safe people’s lives by providing the appropriate living conditions. we maximize people’s life quality by bringing new ideas and solutions. aside from what you like to do such as your hobbies, they shouldn’t stop you from contributing in this society. i hope this translates well to you and i wish you all the best in your career + personal life 🤍

formal education institutes are a shortcut to depression and wasting your life. it's a sad part you have to go through in a stupid governoment made system to get a stupid piece of paper that says "hey, this guy wasted 5 years, he is good to go". not sure what the remedy is. but try a practical experience with various branches of the field. if it doesn't do it for ya. maybe a career shift would.

@Syed Shuvo That is not true. Civil engineers do static analysis for buildings and for example design sewer systems. Imagine if architect was doing the civil engineers job in Burj Khalifa project. Architect do not have permission to do that and they are not even schooled to do that. What you are saying is half way true in project of building a normal house. Normal builders can do that but with architect and structural engineer final product is better. Architect is the boss in that project but civil engineer is more than necessary. Also if you are building highway, dam, bridge, tunnel etc. architects does not exist in those projects and civil engineer is the main guy.

Great video - nicely done. Especially fascinated by the segment about the Florida Marlins baseball stadium (at around 4:00). You never really think about how extreme weather can affect someone's job. It sounds like Aaron had quite the task ahead of him and definitely succeeded. Very cool story there.

Architecture is a tough one and in some ways, a fading field bc its more subjective and creativity driven vs engineering. Once you have a design that is proven to work, you don't have to push architecture's boundaries, you can just do things that are cost effective, easy, and fast. I remember seeing architecture on a top 10 dying fields list when I was in univ for civil, like 10 years ago. I understand the volume is tremendous but with the new miracle materials ,light weight and very strong and flexible. surely a couple of thousand of them would help.I wonder about this when I watch forests out west burn for weeks. Why can't water be transferred across country in pipes. Would really appreciate an answer.

I live in Toronto and I'm deciding to go to George Brown college as I was accepted for civil engineering technology (3 year program - advanced diploma). I'm kinda confused cause universities also offer civil engineering so is that supposed to mean that a university degree will look better, therefore better jobs & higher pay? gbc is a college that mainly focuses on the hands-on aspect so I'm hoping it's equally as good as a university degree but I wanna be more informed before I jump into this. Any thoughts?

I graduated with a Civil Engineering Technology (CET) degree from Kennesaw State University, which I'm assuming has a similar curriculum as the CET program from George Brown. I am now fully licensed as a professional engineer just like my Civil Engineering grad counterparts. But there are downsides to a CET degree versus a full CE degree. Some states in the US like to impose more restrictions on CET grads than on CE grads. For instance, the state of Georgia requires CET grads to wait 7 years until they are eligible to take the PE exam, whereas CE grads only have to wait 4 years. Some states don't even recognize CET degrees when taking the PE exam, such as the state of Alabama. If you are planning on getting licensed as a professional engineer, then I would go with a CE degree. A CE degree is a safe bet since it is recognized everywhere and will future-proof you better than a CET degree will. But if licensure is not a career goal for you then a CET degree might suffice. That is just a very basic overview of the situation. I'm not sure how it is in Canada. Do more research into it to find out the details.

Looks like i found interest again in civil engineering and when i was watching the video seeing the American cities skyscrapers the clean and green environment there is just why shouldn't we make our india like that why shouldn't I be the part of the change that is actually happening in India. There is alot of talented Indian engineers working day and night to make us proud i wanted to be one of them

+hiphopolopulus Well all of the things you mentioned can be big or small! A very big civil engineering project would be the Marlins Park in this video. A much smaller example would simply be a house!

Yeah absolutely. Civil engineers can work with intersections in a small town, small drainage ditches, little baby retaining walls, design a small house, work with erosion if a tiny pond. Lots of examples.
