What Do Beavers Eat?
Үй жануарлары мен аңдар
In this video, I compiled lots of clips of beavers eating … and talked about the various thing beavers eat. All the clips of beavers were filmed in Saskatoon, Saskatchewan. The moose near the end was filmed on Maligne Lake road near Jasper, Alberta, and the elk were filmed in Prince Albert National Park in Saskatchewan. Enjoy!

Great video. Fun to watch Beavers eating
Fantastic close-up footage Mike! Loved your very informative commentary too. Really interesting, as always. 👍
Learned a lot, thanks.
How sweet this is. Happy they're thriving there in the beautiful country of Canada.🇨🇦🍁🙋🌎💙
I wish the world could be forced to watch this video... because I saw a video of a guy shooting at beavers in a pond...the guy doing the shooting said he was killing the beavers because "they eat all the fish in the pond", and the guy liked fishing in the pond. Firstly, beavers don't eat fish...secondly, the pond wouldn't even be there were it not for the beavers. It was a freaking beaver pond, for christ sakes. I left a comment saying as much and tons of people attacked me saying that I didn't know what I was talking about. It was infuriating.

It's not uncommon for us Beaver Believers to get attacked in forums when we try to tell the facts. All we can do is keep going, one person at a time.
I love beaver and your videos🦫Thank you for sharing

I love your beaver viedos🦫🦫
Wonderful video
Woe they really are able to eat wood with out trouble. The canbium.
interesting how they can get enough energy from eating that, gues I have to see a video about their stomach.
👍
Pssh. Forget their stomachs. I don't know how they're holding the thistle plant much less chewing and swallowing it.
I hear they are coprophages, like rabbits, they uh, eat things a second time. Have you seen them do that? Or do they save it for the lodge?

They definitely do that, but I have never seen it.

The ones in my back yard would poop on the yard. It's funny because they make little turds of sawdust. I never directly saw them... ahem... "recycle" but the poops never seemed to stick around for very long.

Poop is eaten especially by young beavers. It facilitates the transfer of the vital microbiota from the parents to the offspring. Beaver diet is largely made out of cellulose which is the same stuff as the dietary fibre we need to eat. Cellulose is basically a really long chain of carbohydrates which in turn are a long chain of sugars, which are the basic blocks of energy. So there's massive amounts of dietary energy in the cellulose, but ONLY if you can digest it to make use of it. No mammals can digest it on their own but herbivores use their gut bacteria to break down the cellulose into accessible carbohydrates and sugars and then use the carbohydrates and sugars as their energy source. The bacterial digestion also results in some proteins and necessary fatty acids and vitamins, that's how the beavers can get everything they need from the woody diet. They have a symbiotic relationship with the gut bacteria but they're not born with it, they need to acquire it by eating the poop of a healthy beaver. Same principle is used in the medical fecal transplants that are currently approved for the treatment of a few illnesses and there's research into using it to treat all kinds of things from depression to colon cancer, because even in humans the gut microbiome plays a huge role.
You missed the one food that many don't know about which actually offers the most nutrition, lily pad roots and also the stems on the small ones. When lily pads are present the often don't put up large feed piles of branches.

There are no lily pads around the beaver families I follow and film. I know beavers eat lily pads where they are present, but I just let that be covered as aquatic plants since we don’t have any.

@@mikesvideosofbeavers Many of the ponds I see do not have lily pads either, but for the ones that do beaver thrive on them. They seem to get really fat and silky. Where there is nothing but hardwood bark to eat they put down a lot of trees, but with an abundance of lily pads they don't cut nearly as many trees. I guess they just cut wood to sharpen their teeth. Some of the lily pad ponds don't look there are many beaver, but it will fool you.

I don't know if all beavers do, but the beaver family I watch seems to think they are a great treat.
Someone should make ASMR'S of Beavers eating
So I take it they don't like trees which have been killed or smothered in Ivy?
BEAVER: I plead the fifth mr. Hoover I did not knock down your cherry tree wearing fell over on your home. Although it may have tasted pretty good.

I know there is 1 video of a beaver eating a fish. It was likely a rabid beaver or a sick or starving beaver. Beavers are strict herbivores. A beaver eating a fish was likely very sick and acting unnaturally, or simply starving and desperate.
