Ғылым және технология

Its not often beaches, telecoms, and flame throwers mix, but at the birth of global telecommunication, when telegraphy services where king they did.

I really recommend everyone to go check those mechanical tools for telegraph as they are fascinating. If you think that mechanical watches with all those gears look cool and complicated you will be surprised how awesome all those tools and boxes are.

Fascinating! Even more so since I love to listen to your narration! This reminds me of near where I live in the midwestern US there's a road called "Telegraph Road." Named so because some of the first telegraph lines headed west from Chicago, crossed the Mississippi River here and ended going west out of town along that road. Of course now there's practically zero mention of that anywhere but back in as late as the 1980's there used to be large trunks of telephone lines that were strung up along that road. Most of those have since been buried or replaced with fiber these days.

When I visited several years ago they had a fully equipped amateur radio station in one of the tunnel rooms complete with it's own special callsign, visitors ( with an Amateur Radio Licence ) were permitted to operate the station.

Always remember the digital roots of long distance telecommunications - in particular old school Morse telegraphy. We have in a way even almost returned to the roots with a vast amount of electronic communication being performed as digital transmission of text. The circle is complete. 😊

Thanks for that. I had no idea that there was an open air theatre there but always wanted to go and see the telegraphs. Not sure I ever will though - public transport there doesn't seem great and your description of local driving styles doesn't encourage me to cycle. I was wondering about the use of PK instead of the more obvious PC - there's only one dot difference in morse so it probably wasn't to keep it shorter. Maybe there already was a station with the code PC.

There are words for that but I will not say them. I just want this sentence to speak for itself and volumes about you. It does remind me however about a certain movie scene where everybody goes nuts when somebody says: "Jehovah".

@@catriona_drummond I'm sorry I don't know that movie; I'm not much of a movie buff anymore. Was it a book first, in which case I may have read it. " I just want this sentence to speak for itself and volumes about you." It certainly does but it says nothing more than that it speaks for itself, what with it being such a short sentence and all; I guess you got your wsih/want granted. If you meant the previous sentence, you should have said so. You've led me to curiosity as tot he words you would use, however, to describe my choice. And yes, the mention and the image are enough when it comes to certain individuals, topics and so forth.
