I agree, this episode was very rushed, but that didn't mean I hated it either. Definitely should've been two to three parts, but I do think this is due to production issues and where CN/Adult Swim stands now. Anyways about this last episode and I feel this will get real deep. I really, REALLY hated that I saw some spoilers and I really went about trying to avoid those myself so I could witness it myself. Aside from that, this episode really did had me in deep emotions because even without those spoilers, I had a feeling Spear may no longer be around or be relevant to the era they would be currently in as shown in the painting he made. I knew right there that he was the last of his kind once standing there alone. As for the fight, again this was rushed, but I do want people to take this in. What the hell was Spear and Fang supposed to do against a demon of vengeance and that's where it really hit me... a sacrifice had to be made and when I saw Spear crying out to Fang when she got burned by the Viking and when Spear himself got caught into the fire engulfed in the flames, nothing mattered no more, but the people he wanted to protect, so he went all out to make sure that demon was pushed away as far as possible, even if it meant that Spear himself would die. Of course the Viking survived and somewhat Spear, but as the Viking said Vidarr, this might've meant his deal was done, therefore Vidarr itself took the Viking forever to be enslaved by it as an ironic thing. And now Mira comes in to rid of any of the remaining flames off of Spear. Now this is probably what some people thought was controversial which was Mira carrying over Spear's offspring. I get that some may have think, "Oh, this isn't a romantic moment." or "Is she really doing him all seared up that way?!", but I think it runs deeper (no pun intended) than that. I think in my opinion this was due to the fact that Mira saw what was on the painting of Spear's, she realized that he was the only one left and through all the things he put himself through to even save Mira, I truly think it was a "Thank you." than it was a couple's moment because you have to remember the world of Primal is to survive and spread life with no rules to dictate that whatsoever. Yes, it's sad that Spear and Mira may have not really had something that would probably have them be together, but I wanted to reiterate that Spear no longer feels to be a part of where he stands, so for better or worse this was perhaps the best course of action to go on about. Also to end this off, I do feel again this was rushed due to the problems going about Warner, but honestly I think I wouldn't want this to keep going as this was a good thing going and I would hate this to be ruined. I do get that Gennedy mentioned that Primal is a world that isn't just revolved around Spear and Fang, but maybe this should end for the better for the great work of art he's made through the production of this show and this will forever be one of my favorites.

Could also be that vidarr was insulted that he ended the deal when spear was still alive, but then again he killed more than just spear and spear died later. Maybe it got pissed he didn’t kill everyone there and just ended it when he got what HE already wanted. And for spear and Mira’s emergency child, it feels rushed and I get that back then and in some cultures, having a kid was just a replacement. And it didn’t set with everyone which makes sense and still could’ve been a two parter, but it wasn’t unacceptable

@@Dookieman1975 Maybe. Overall, even if Spear was to survive, he was without a doubt through and would no longer be the person he once was. Yeah and for that I think Mira in good faith wanted a part of Spear to be around because he meant so much especially for Fang.

Spear becoming cheif of his people tells me that him, his wife, and his two children were the only survivors left of his tribe. That just proves how savage his home truly was and also how strong Spear was for being the last survivor of his race and keeping his family safe for as long as he did.

I somewhat disagree. While I completely agree spear is super strong, durable, and badass, I honestly think spears bloodline was the only strong ones of his tribe. All the others ran and hid, while his father was the only one willing to fight. Unlike the vikings, it could be that the other members of spears clan only know how to flee, while the leader fights. Maybe spears great great grandfather, great grandfather, and grandfather were all fighting leaders, while the rest cowered.

The Viking chief becoming a snake is more significant than you think. If you remember back in season one spear had nightmares about snakes ever since the ep where he and fang fell in the river and had to fight a bunch of snakes. They both became afraid of snakes after that and avoided large bodies of water. That’s why fang didn’t want to get in the boat to save Mira at first.

If you don’t understand, why is finished the way it did and it felt so rushed , just look into what warner brothers is going through and how they are slashing the budget and canceling all their low rated shows and cost cutting, specially the animation department, it make sense why this happened . I think it was this way or getting out right cancelled. I think it was because of genedy that we even got this far . Even if you look at the last couple of episodes u see so many tricks they are doing to keep the budget low , same shots of war , same shots of just paddling the boat , same shots of spears climbing the stairs . In my theory, the Viking looked different in the shot right when Spear kept coming after getting put on fire. His eyes widened maybe that shock is what may have broken the pact or deal so to speak. But that’s just my bad two cents here. I do think that Vidarr can feel what the Viking feels and was angry how damaged that protective skin he had got from Spear smashing it repeatedly. The Viking probably felt this rush of emotions as well maybe even regrets or guilt that could have broken such a pact with Vidarr. I’m not too positive how the contract between them looked but the whole time the expression looked vengeful right until he saw Spear charging at him. I have many more thoughts about it but it’s all kind of meh in my own opinion.

When animals kill your family, generally revenge is taken on the animals, killing the whole pack, ensure safety. When it's a human and an animal, the animal doesn't matter. Generally the animal is a tool for the human to inflict pain. Considering the slavers thought other people were below them enough to use as slaves, I have no doubt they viewed fang as merely a dumb animal used by spear. The viking died, that's how he met Vidarr, the deal wasn't for him to come back to life but to get revenge. (And why would he want to? His entire family and all his friends were killed. He's completely alone in a world he made an enemy of.) So killing fang would be a bonus but spear is the main target. Being a god, I'd say Vidarr can tell when someone is bound for death or not. When spear was burnt to a crisp, Vidarr knew that the deal was done. The viking got his revenge because spear would soon die. The deal was to kill the caveman, not sit and watch the light leave his eyes. "The deal is done, he will die, now you will come back to me and serve me for eternity." Ironically the viking signed himself up for being a slave for all eternity after being a slaver for most if not all his life.

In a series about a man and dinosaur surviving together, it’s kinda disappointing we didn’t get a goodbye scene between Spear & Fang. We just needed 1 more ep. Echoes of Eternity dedicated to the demon battle, and another episode for Spears goodbye. Maybe take out the Mira reading Spears cave art scene and put it in the goodbye episode, that plus spears death taken out of that ep leaves more time for a more interesting last battle. Dedicate the REAL last episode to Mira and dying Spear realizing they love eachother before he kicks it, and have Fang accepting that her battle friend is dying and have a cute goodbye scene.

So some respect. Not to mention that from here on, Viking dad is forever his slave. And regarding how rushed it feels... Not gonna lie, Gendy is amazing at story telling, but his endings always feel like that xD Samurai Jack had the same issue... To expand on that, the horned god clearly wanted Spear dead (for what reason, I can only hope the show progresses so we get an answer), so once Spear was beyond saving, the viking guy's job was done. "We both got what we wanted, now get down here. What, you thought you'd get some sort of reward? You made a deal with the proverbial devil, you should know how this works!" And I think he was so quick to drag him down because he doesn't want too much exposure of his existence, or that of his work. Personally, I currently think I would have preferred if the scene played out more like this… After the resurrected chieftain gets his body pummeled and smashed against the mountainside, we would see his body revert back to its original self. It would be as if the chieftain’s resurrected form was damaged enough that his power is beginning to leave him. When Mira comes and puts out the fires burning Spear, the reverted chieftain is too broken and weak to attack Mira. When the two stare at each other, the chieftain futility reaches out with his hand and hatefully groans “Vidarr”, right as the demon’s hand then comes to drag him back down. I felt the chieftain reverting back and him getting dragged down could have been separate moments, rather than happening at the same time. The implication I am going for is that the chieftain sold his soul for one more shot at revenge, and with newfound demonic power. And once he was fatally injured again, his shot at revenge was over and it was the demon’s turn to collect his due, even if the chieftain still had yet to murder Fang and Mira.

@@RequiemPoete That's assuming the horned god really is Vidarr. There's a little too much going on there for him to be a simple embodiment of revenge, he is clearly something far more vast in scale, likened to more of a biblical devil than a Norse god. The ending hit so hard. Spear had a tribe where he lost his father an assumed his position only to possibly end up as the only survivor along with his wife and children. He loses them similarly to Fang but in the end Fang is at least able to have more. Mira, taken away from her home and people was able to return and even found out her friend survived. Hell even Kamau was able to save his people and daughter. Spear could'nt even live in that village that saved him because of what happened with Fang. He had nothing and Mira understood that.

I think everybody is kind of missing the point of Mira having Spear’s baby. A lot of people keep saying that it would have been better if they had gotten together earlier, but the problem with that is I don’t think Mira was interested in Spear romantically at all. I admit that I was weirded out when she climbed on top of him on his deathbed, but she knew he was dying and the only thing she could think to do for him was to keep his bloodline alive. She also did this intentionally, and I think her getting pregnant from them hooking up earlier would have detracted from the fact she was making a sacrifice of her own in this moment. It wasn’t about lust or love, it was about reproduction. He did a lot for her, and that was the only way she could repay him. The fact that she was willing to go through pregnancy and childbirth to keep her friend’s legacy alive is pretty profound too. In a world like Primal’s that focuses primarily on survival in a hostile environment, successfully procreating and leaving something of yourself behind before you go is the ultimate victory. That is what Mira did for Spear, and despite the initial awkwardness, I think it absolutely works as a conclusion for the show.

But yes all in all she did what she did to protect his bloodline no questions there, and it show how much she cared for him.

I want it to almost become an anthology show, where season 3 would still be called Primal, but with a different subheading. Low-dialogue, high-emotion, survival, rawness, visual storytelling: All that stuff, but with different characters. There's more things I want to do with Primal, not necessarily Spear and Fang. Stuff that are current, pretty much anything that was planned, entirely completed projects that were pending release are getting vaulted. Not hard to imagine gendy getting a heads up and told that primal is on its way out so he's going to have to wrap it up quick. Kinda wish there was a law that forced write offs into the public domain. Just rubs me the wrong way that a company can complete forfeit something for a financial break but still gets to keep it.

Yeah I’m sure the whole Warner Bros Discovery thing didn’t help, but I also think Genndy might’ve accidentally set up his series to end shorter than he previously had intended. I felt like meeting Mira and the whole discovering different human civilizations thing felt a little to soon for the stage Primal was in at the time. Felt better suited for season 3 or 4 if you ask me, but I guess Genndy knew the show might not last that long so he set up a major plot twist for season 2 to peak the audience’s interest. But by trying to keep the show different and constantly evolving it with its world building he unintentionally set it up to end sooner than he had expected. Nonetheless I’m still very happy the show was made at all and truly was one of a kind. It was special and had beautiful animation, a good story, and likable characters who barely spoke. THAT’S AMAZING! I just wish we had seen more of it. Nonetheless thank you Genndy for making Primal.

Honestly my main gripe with this episode is that he didn't get to reunite with his family the way Lula did. He died feeling estranged from other humans and Fang's family- as the last neanderthal (as Gendy remarked in his interview about Primal's "ending")- who could blame him? Family means everything to Spear, and in my heart I'm imagining him appearing in a feild of flowers, looking around confused and calling out for Fang, before suddenly realizing he's not alone. Not anymore. Meeting his wife, kids, and the rest of his tribe in the afterlife, he can finally feel like he belongs. If Primal comes back for season 3 I would love to see more lore on the moon god and Vidarr (the God of Hell), especially with Spear's connection with the moon god. Spear was seen looking up at the moon a lot throughout the episode, joining Mira in a prayer and being transfixed when he saw the dancer. It would be fascinating if the god turned out to be one of rebirth or serenity to parallel the Viking Cheif's (literal) flaming vengeance. Maybe he won't be reborn the same way the Cheif was, but it would be cool if he came back in some way to learn he has a daughter. That his legacy lives on through her.

Spear's journey was great, with plenty of emotional discovery and the understanding of what life means, but also he became his own character. I knew that he'd follow in the footsteps of Action Dexter and Samurai Jack, so the direction of his character and the conclusion of his story really made him stand out. The crew worked well on him and gave a warm-hearted send-off. And besides, plot armor had to break at some point. I already was surprised that Fang survived the beat down at the hands of Krog, but a human-furnace not killing Spear, I mean come on!

So Mira, as spear is dying, gives him family. A daughter(?), her and his. He might have never got to meet her but in the end Mira made sure that he found family, and left them behind in a safer world.

Once she understood his painting, she gave him what he wanted most (out of love and respect for a friend), a family. I want it to almost become an anthology show, where season 3 would still be called Primal, but with a different subheading. The episode hit me like a ton of bricks w/ anticipation because I really didn’t know how things would turn out & I def teared up seeing that ending. I’m hoping for more moving forward but if things end here I’m ok with that too. Ending well done. I agree with your notion that things felt a bit rushed and that it probably should’ve been a two part episode at least but I didn’t dislike it at all. I really appreciate your channel and always looked forward to your Primal vids. Thanks Alteori! Idea video: P.S. if there is a next season an aspect I’ve grown to love most about Primal will forever be changed (the no talking - which I’ve really grown to appreciate) do you think it can still set itself apart amongst it’s animated peers?

Just gonna imagine this episode doesn’t exist and Spear lives the rest of his life with Mira and Fang until he dies at a ripe old age.

Well now it's only left to Fang, Mira, Horn & Jaws, and Spear's daughter, and before all of this I thought it was Fang that would die

the primal instinct is the one thing in time that is eternal, to defend or protect, to hunt for sustenance, to copulate, or to feel kinship and love. the primal state is all those things that echo threw eternity.

For me, if I had the creative control to just add/change a couple minutes of animation to the Season 2 finale, these below would be my highest priority ideas… *1.) Imply that Spear and Mira were already starting to get intimate, before they come ashore (EDIT: People have offered counterpoints in replies).* That way, it could avoid the awkward setup of Mira copulating with a burnt up Spear. Also, having their intimacy take place before they come upon her village could suggest that Spear did not think about living in civilization at the time. This prompts him to later feel conflicted when he draws himself being alone in his paintings, separate from Mira’s village. *2.) Allow Mira and Fang to participate more in the actual climactic fight, even if it is only for a bit.* For example, Mira could see them from a distance and try to shoot arrows at the resurrected chieftain. It does not damage him much, but it can briefly distract the chieftain to buy Spear and Fang some time. Once Spear and Fang are cornered on the mountaintop, Fang desperately grabs that small tree in her jaws, uproots it, and swings it at the chieftain (similar to how she was smart enough to push a battering ram in an earlier episode). The chieftain is staggered by the blow and burns Fang in retaliation, but it signals to both Spear and the audience that the chieftain can still be hurt with enough force, making him vulnerable. *3.) Have the chieftain reverting back to his regular human appearance and the demon’s hand dragging him down be two separate moments to focus on, rather than happening at the same time.* After the chieftain’s body is smashed against the mountainside and falls next to spear, he begins to revert back, as if his demonic power is leaving him. While Mira is putting out the fire burning Spear, the reverted chieftain and Mira lock eyes one last time. The chieftain is too weak and broken, so all he can do is futilely reach his hand out towards Mira and angrily growl “Vidarr!”, before the demon’s hand then reaches up to drag him back down. My intended implication is that the chieftain still had yet to fully satisfy his quest for vengeance, but he was killed again, forfeiting his one chance and making the demon come to collect his end of the bargain. *4.) Have Mira instead simply communicate to Spear that she is pregnant, during their final moment together.* Mira could feel a bulge in her stomach, get Spear’s attention, and point him towards that spot on her belly. Now, Spear has one more reason to at least die content. He nearly committed suicide after losing his family in the first episode, but now both Fang and Mira are living happily with a new family, because of him. *5.) If Genndy wanted to unambiguously have Spear be dead, as oppose to leaving the potential for him to still be alive (albeit crippled for life), a reunion between Spear and his old family could have been shown as an added bonus.* Like maybe towards the episode’s final shot, an image of Spear and his old family could briefly appear in the sky, as a callback to the first episode.

I think you missed the point. Mira's last act was one of absolute compassion and sacrifice. Implying she was pregnant before then wouldve removed that. She had sex with him because she wanted dto bear him a child and continue his legacy, one last act of absolute irrevocable compassion. It wasn't about lust, but something deeper than that. And it was shocking because it was such a raw moment where she literally embodied the greatest essence of the primal woman. He died fighting to protect his family (primal man) and she sacrificed her time and possible health to carry on the species (primal woman). It was perfect.

Major agree with everything but Mira and Spear already having conceived a child on the seas instead of in the final scene. I don’t necessarily think Mira loved him in the lustful way, as nothing she really did prior indicated that. However he did protect her and manage to get her home to her people, hence fulfilling her greatest wish to live free. I think this was her way of fulfilling his greatest wish which was to have a family and continue on. I enjoy the complexity of their relationship and how it was more open for interpretation this way rather than dryly cut.

@@changlouriousbasterd9524 I see what you and pyro ok mean. But at least when I and other commenters first saw that scene, it came off to me as a bit "Narm", to quote TV Tropes. So I was admittedly just hastily thinking up an alternative to achieve the same general ending for Spear and Mira's child. If it makes them come across as more "lustful", I did not exactly intend that. Maybe I should not have lumped it with those other suggestions, which everyone seems to agree with me on a lot more.

@@markcobuzzi826 What you suggested would've simply took away from the emotional impact of his death and relegated Mira to a mere vehicle for procreation. It would've been the safe end we have seen before with Braveheart. Her entire contribution to the show simply would've been to have his baby. In this way she still did that, but she did it willingly and with full volition. She knew what would come of it and wanted that for him. It enhanced the act of procreation and made it something much, much more. She sacrificed in her own way and at the same time repaid him for saving her and bringing her home. It was a remarkable close to both characters' story arcs.
