What did Jesus mean when He said it is easier for a camel to go through the eye of a needle?

What did Jesus mean when He said it is easier for a camel to go through the eye of a needle than for a rich man to get into heaven? Was Jesus referring to a literal camel and a literal needle, or to a gate that was known as the Needle’s Eye?

He meant exactly what he said. It wasn’t a parable. All these people trying to rationalize their own greed are fools. Of course we don’t really know who said it. Maybe just the author

I was told of the "alternate" view by a co-worker who was studying for her "ministry" exam. She said it was dangerous for people like me (of little formal training) to try to interpret the Bible. My Savior, when urged by a disciple to flee the crucifixion, chose to stay and suffer humiliation, torture, and death to fulfill His task of leading the way to the Kingdom of God. No one ever said being a Christian is easy! This verse is so important in terms of politically defining stances on economic and social issues. Some think it's paramount to help the poor, while other faiths vary from materialistic ambivalence to wealth actually being a gift from God. Not in MY book! Christianity to me will always be the Sermon on the Mount, His rage at the desecration of the temple, and putting the needs of others before personal wants. (Like simply wearing a mask to protect others' lives for 15 minutes while shopping.) Keep the faith and stay away from false idols like Ayn Rand. Cheers!

The term in Greek (even in modern Greek) for the mooring line of a ship is the term used here. It's pronounced "Camilon." Now here's the Greek text. In short, this is one of the greatest biblical misinterpretations. Not that it matters much, the point is still the same: Difficult for a rich person whose wealth is so great that it defines their life and identity to place Christ above it all.

Does it imply that ALL rich people are bad and wont enter into heaven? is there an inbetween rich and poor? how much money do you need to have to be considered rich or poor, some people are neither rich nor poor...so Im just going to say that the pride a person has is in himself for his accomplishments and not reverencing God for his wealth and how he chooses to use his talent that God gave him to keep for himself makes him rich I consider a poor person who can be rich but chooses to do good with his talents to better the world, his community, or his family depending on how rich he is and does not boast or waste his talents on material things just like the parable of the talents that were given to individuals in the bible and when asked what they did with the talents all but one did what was expected

Loving Money more than God is the issue. Trust in Jesus Christ alone for salvation. Not money, merit, achievements or anything else.

I have seen a couple videos on this topic and the answer is obvious if this verse is read in context. He is obviously speaking of an actual camel as he concludes: Matt 19:26 "But Jesus beheld them, and said unto them, With men this is impossible; but with God all things are possible." In most cases, you just need to keep reading to "Rightly divide the word of God" Law and gospel are the two distinct natures of the word. Law always precedes the gospel and the gospel (solution) should always follow the law in every sermon.

I think the answer is different.... rich means, those who are carrying the burdens of this world and are content with it... and in this context ' rich' has nothing to do with your bank balance..... the camel can enter the 'eye of the needle ' ( narrow gate) only after it gets rid of it's burden, so it is for all of us to get rid of our own burdens.. Jesus Christ said ' take my burden for it is light '

2:09 - 2:34 Man can't earn salvation Ephesians 2:8 agrees with this notion, however. (see down below) ( this passage says the opposite of that.) James chapter 2 verse 14 "What good is it, my brothers and sisters, if someone claims to have faith but has no deeds? Can such faith save them? 15 Suppose a brother or a sister is without clothes and daily food. 16 If one of you says to them, “Go in peace; keep warm and well fed,” but does nothing about their physical needs, what good is it? 17 In the same way, faith by itself, if it is not accompanied by action, is dead18 But someone will say, “You have faith; I have deeds.” Show me your faith without deeds, and I will show you my faith by my deeds. 19 You believe that there is one God. Good! Even the demons believe that-and shudder. 20 You foolish person, do you want evidence that faith without deeds is useless? 21 Was not our father Abraham considered righteous for what he did when he offered his son Isaac on the altar? 22 You see that his faith and his actions were working together, and his faith was made complete by what he did. 23 And the scripture was fulfilled that says, “Abraham believed God, and it was credited to him as righteousness,” and he was called God’s friend. 24 You see that a person is considered righteous by what they do and not by faith alone. I'm sorry to point this out, but the bible is not consistent in its teachings. There is a good reason for this, it's because it's not just one book. It's a collection of many different writings from different time periods. This video is an example of how modern Christians rationalize the text to fit the modern culture. If Jesus was around today and saw how Christians behave today, Most likely He would not approve of what he sees.

Ephesians 2:8 and James 2:14 are in opposition of each other. You can rationalize it all you want, but It doesn't matter. It's a contradiction in what is supposed to be the perfect word of God. if it was perfect there should be no contradictions right? unless God isn't perfect and makes mistakes.

Even wigs and makeup can’t make It to heaven ! God is holy beyond words! Remember when Jesus saw Nathanael , he said this is a true Jew , nothing false in him ! Think about it , why do God in the Old Testament even called some people righteous and others wicked !! Just because you commits deadly sin it doesn’t mean everybody on earth is doing the same ! They are some people who have repented their sins ! Be alert , strive to enter! It’s not as simple as these people suggests ! That’s why Jesus is clear that most people never make it to heaven ! A narrow Gate and the Grace thing isn’t compatible !

@@gokuhawks14you're incorrect in your assertion that The Holy Bible contradicts itself. The rest of Ephesians 2:8-10 say "For it is by grace you have been saved, through faith-and this is not from yourselves, it is the gift of God- not by works, so that no one can boast. For we are God’s handiwork, created in Christ Jesus to do good works, which God prepared in advance for us to do. Ephesians 2:8‭-‬10 NIV Note the 'good works' in verse 10. These deep insights and understandings though require a personal relationship with God. It is not surprising that it would seem contradictory to someone who lacks faith and a personal relationship with God. (I am assuming this based on the fact that you think that The Holy Bible contradicts itself.) You seem to be trying to interpret Sacred Scripture through the eyes of man rather than being instructed by The Holy Spirit. I'm commenting on this post also for anyone else who might be reading these comments so hopefully they won't be misled. This is the understanding that I have of this topic.

I used to evangelize people and whenever I would meet someone that said they used to be a Christian I would tell them that they were never a true Christian. Now I'm getting the same treatment lol. I stopped believing in Christianity because I honestly studied it and realized that there were more holes in it than swiss cheese. Your comment response is just a way to rationalize the contraction between the two books. I used to do it all the time until I got real with myself. Sorry but Ephesians 2:8 and James 2:14 still contradict each other no matter the mental gymnastics you do in your head.

Every video i've seen about this verse has tried to tip-toe around and tries to distort the meaning of a very clear statement: Wealth corrupts, it causes inequality and power of people, and those who horde wealth will not enter the kingdom of heaven. Jesus allied himself with the poor & disfortunate, he worked as a labourer, he was notoriously anti-materialistic. This verse is literally proceded by Jesus telling a wealthy young man to sell his posessions and give to the poor. It's obvious from even the most basic of standpoints. Wealth and power corrupt, and are usually horded by those for personal gain. The enemies of Christ were the wealthy ruling class and the authorities that imprisioned him unjustly. Judas was even bribed into betraying Jesus by the wealthy, but Jesus did not blame Judas. The story of Jesus is one of a defiance to harsh individualism in the pursuit of wealthy & power, and to join under communal living and caring for those most vunerable. How ironic that the church does not choose to represent this ideology, when you have multi-billion dollar enterprises profiting off religion, all tax free in a Christian society built off of Capitalism. How strange that we spent centuries demonising homosexuals, interracial couplings, women's rights, infidels and heretics, but never those with wealth. Religious leaders will have no problem telling you that if you love the same sex, you will burn in hell. If you are not baptised, you will burn in hell. If you have premarital sex, masturbate, steal, swear or even just like to listen to rock & roll while playing Dungeons & Dragons, you'll burn in hell. But not a single peep about a verse that appears 3 times in the book of genesis.

A rich man always gets what he wants with is wealth,so he relies on his money to get him past the day. Where a poor man with little, struggles ask God to help get him past the day. The poor man daily goes to God in faith. While the rich man has no need to seek God as he thinks everything he needs is right at hand. There comes a day and time when each of us stand at a door. What will be your perspective on that day? The stubborn camel,or the poor man? Who will be the richer on that day? The rich man in poverty or the poor man in wealth of faith?
