Arrival is about a linguist (Louise Banks) who is tasked with interpreting an alien language to determine if they come in peace after alien crafts land around the world.
Twelve extraterrestrial spacecraft hover over disparate locations around the Earth. A U.S. Army officer, Colonel G.T. Weber, recruits Banks and physicist Ian Donnelly to find out why the aliens have come. Weber takes them to an army encampment in Montana near one of the craft. On board, Banks and Donnelly make contact with two seven-limbed aliens, whom they call "heptapods"; Donnelly nicknames them Abbott and Costello. Banks and Donnelly begin researching their written language of complicated circular symbols. As Banks studies the language, she starts to have visions of a child, who seems to be her daughter.

The General’s wife’s dying words translate to “In war there are no winners, only widows”. 😭

That's what the screenwriter said in an interview. However actual mandarin speakers said it's: "War doesn't make heros, only orphans and widows". Similar but slightly different. It's actually interesting to have the full conversation translated.

There are a lot to uncover and breakdown about this movie. The beauty of this movie is that it gets better as you watch it the second and third time as you'd be picking up little details here and there. Like for an example, Ian's first words to Louis, "Language is the first weapon drawn in a conflict" foreshadowing the "gift" that was mistranslated as "weapon". The canary is an old harmful gas detection method used by miners to see if the mines they're in contain toxic gas. Sapir-Whorf hypothesis is used in the movie as how Louis was able to "think" and perceived time in Heptapod's language. The narrative of the story itself is a circle, just like the Heptapod's language. If you think about it, Abbott did what it had to do knowing full well that it's gonna die. They really emphasize the important of languages, communication, and how their misinterpretation can be used to wage war or sow unity. This is part of short stories in The Stories of your life and others by Ted Chiang

and again, because I am so extremely amazed, how so many people watching this can think so differently about all this. Everybody(!) came up with amaaaaaazing thounghts and perspectives how to look at this story and what could be all behind this. Just one example: Nobody except you (and me back then) said that the concept of "deja vue" is also addressed in here. No one else mentioned the word deja vue before. Just cool all that. ... and how and when you reacted emotionally was here the same like me in the past, what is interesting, because also all the people who react emotionally to the movie do this quite differently or at different moments, what is crazy!

your reaction is maybe the 20th reaction I saw about ARRIVAL and crazy, everybody looked at slightly different aspects of the story, everybody found out the idea behind the movie at a little different moment or in a different way and speed, and as said, everybody pointed out with his/her comments other parts of the amazing construction of this story. You although said the most thoughts how I had them, when I watched the movie in the cinema. 🤩👍

Great reaction! I absolutely love this film; it's one of those film where I sat lost in thoughts for quite some time after the film ended. I also realised that this one is likely to remain one of my all-time favourite films for the rest of my days. Superb acting all around and this film really put Amy Adams on my radar. Jeremy Renner's Ian reacted a bit like I imagine that I would - I would probably be all (nervously) giddy as well when touching a craft from another world for the first time! 😲 An absolutely beautiful film and I am sure one that can appeal to a lot of people, including those that never really watch sci-fi!

This film really makes the viewer work - but it rewards that work. These aliens are REALLY ....alien - which takes quite an imaginative leap. How does an author write something unimaginable? They pulled it off and walk the viewer through the same journey of discovery as the protagonists of the film. I remain in awe of how every element of this movie works together to make something that exceeds the sum of its parts. The visuals, the score & sfx, the script - each brilliant in their own right, but TOGETHER.... 😲😲 This film is also a great re-watch, because the second time you travel through the story the same way Louise does. The only other film I've seen that holds up this way is another 'nature of time' related film: 12 Monkeys. A very different film except for the second time watching it, you see how brilliantly all the pieces fit together.

One of the greatest films of the modern era... A truly brilliant film in so many ways. It never fails to move me. Other brilliant films on this level: "CHILDREN OF MEN," "GRAVITY" (Both by the fantastic director Alphonso Cuaron). "PLEASANTVILLE," "STRANGER THAN FICTION," and "AMELIE" ... all of those films will stay with you long after you're finished watching. All the best!!

Haha! "Did the bird get a booster at least?' No, the bird did not, as that would defeat the purpose of the bird being there. Good reaction. And i think why some people found it "boring" is that they may have gone in expecting an action sci-fi film, like most big budget hollywood sci-fi films are. They were probably waiting for the aliens to attack or something, but this wasn't that kind of movie. It's better - it's one of my favourite films ever. Based on Ted Chiang's story called "Story of Your life", which is worth reading even if you've seen the movie. (In some ways, knowing the basic plot twist makes it a better read, because you're focusing on everything else; and it's more detailed in the physics than the movie).

I would appreciate someone reacting to something else than what everyone does. So, my suggestion is the japanese 5 movie-series "Kozure Okami" (Lone wolf and cub). If that seems too far out then "Zatoichi" from 2001 ca.

@@Reactbina They are based on the worlds largest manga. (Serious manga) More than 5000 pages. They made a mish-mash american version called "Shogun Assassin" that takes bits from all 5 movies. But the originals are the best!

@@80Jay71 I love Japan and Japanese stuff but I can't promise anything. The reason is that Japan is really strict when it comes to Fair use and they often strike KZread channels. too risky...
