WHAT DID I EAT AT THE ATLAS MOUNTAIN RACE?
The Atlas Mountain Race is a 1300km self supported bikepacking event around the Atlas Mountains in Morroco. In this video I run through the food I ate during the event.

the race film made it look like you were cruising through the race, so its nice to hear about the struggles as well
great job going through the race refueling-wise. Good info for aspirants and nice to know that top ten riders have quite the same foodstop strategy like e.g. me solidly midpack to even further back. Which is at the same time sound and sensible and over-cautious and when in doubt, never leave an omelette behind! 🤣
Glad I'm not the only person who takes their energy bars on adventures.
Just love all these videos with the details and commentary and little pics and behind the scenes. Hoping there’s still some epic footage to come as the scenery deserves its own view. Thanks for the Q&A too. Couple of my questions answered but also couple good ones lost - will add the to a comment somewhere. Sorry crazy username, will try and change it. Steve.
I'll be happy if I don't see one of those little pack of biscuits again 🤣 I took some dehydrated porridge sachets and they were a major help.
Great insights. Thanks so much!
I do like those crepes but seldom buy them, my grievance with them is that they are individually wrapped in plastic so don't buy them out of principal.

unfortunately its hard to find food that isn't covered in plastic nowadays
Tins of sardines were a good find for me!. After the sand section I bagged a late night shop and enjoyed cheese & crisp sandwiches for supper - delicious! before climbing into the anti-atlas.

Love it when that happens and you get a bonus shop!
Thats really helpful Josh will check out, many thanks
A plus one for tinned fish, great video Josh. I struggled with eating as well, wasn’t sick just couldn’t face eating.

I suspect it's due to hydration ( or lack of). the conditions on Morroco just arnt great for keeping on top of it.
Great video! Your expression of glee was priceless when you both found the little shop with bagettes! Makes me realise just how many calories, and hydration you have to get into your body. How did you cope with eating the fatty stuff? I'm feeling a bit sick just at the thought of it🤣🤢

To be honest the fatty stuff tastes so good after endless sweet things. I crave real food and different textures. Cant beat a bag of crisps after days of sugar!
eat all the food!
Josh another great video , would love to see how you plot your course prior to the race, the planning must be really intense may make for a great vid. From know your C.P. to resupply areas and other relevant info on route. Thanks anyway Dave

For Atlas it's a fixed route so no need to plot a course. However I will be doing TCR later in the year which will require planning. I'll make a video around that... but in the mean time I made one around route planning for the Japanese odyssey at the end of last year: kzread.info/dash/bejne/oI542rmIpa-xZ5c.html
Haha, I did ride next to you for a little while but my own stomach was making at least the same noises as yours 😂
Super interesting you said 50g carb is good for an hour at least. Really keen to hear more from you on that topic, are you fat metabolizing; keeping your HR down etc etc (I don’t know!)
Hi Josh , great videos and full of great insight, re the porridge , do you use cold water or take a heat source ?
Cheers
Great vid Josh and well done through the struggle at the end. I worry about dehydration and I’m a salty sweater, which is not ideal. If you stop at all the re-supply points do you think it’s realistic to keep on top of this throughout the race in your experience or is it just part of the race & you just have to do your best?

Hydration is tricky in Morroco given the temperatures and the fact the air is very dry. In theory you could hydrate at each stop if you waited a while... but the reality is you top up buy food and carry on so never really fully catch up with hydration
Another great video. A question on the Holyfat.: I took advantage of your discount code last year and have been using it with pretty good results; but only on day rides up to 8 hours long. Why only take 1 package?

Yes it's good stuff. I only carried one sachet mainly because I didn't want to carry too much extra weight... as it was I ended up carrying a tonne energy bars the whole race, I probably would have been better off with 2 sachets of holy fat
Hey Josh, have you experimented mixing up more fats like MCT / coconut milk or oil in your nutrition? MCT might be tricky for some though. In warmer climate, I tend to use coconut milk mix and high fat dried sausages like salami.

Was just looking at the site - the Holyfat nut butter he used has MCT.

Yes I dont use it exclusively. But eat a fair bit of coconut oil/milk etc in my daily diet. Coconut oil in porridge is a staple for me. For general training I use a mix of high carb days and lower carb days so I can burn fats effectively in races. Maybe I'll put a video together on that at some point if its a topic of interest
Any thoughts on using this route for a tour rather than a race, as a personal solo challenge?

There are long sections which might feel too long on a tour, but I would certainly recommend taking a less race focussed approach to enjoy the experience more. My own race experience would have been far more enjoyable by taking a little more time and doing fewer hours riding in the dark hours.

Thanks, that's a great insight. It's prompted my thoughts towards the balance between daytime heat and nighttime route illumination.

It would be an excellent basis for a tour, but you may wish to short cut a few sections on the road to make it more manageable in terms of distance and resupply etc
