This game is a perfect example for what VR should be in my opinion. The immersion it brings to running trains, the feeling of blowing through rail yards at 50km/h hauling 800 tons. The steamers and all the many little inputs you have to physically reach around to keep the engine running. I’ve been playing since the overhauled update and it was great then and it’s breathtaking now. (Honorable mention for VTOL VR as it does the same sort of thing. Maybe even better since you’re sitting in a cockpit so you don’t need a large play space)

I kinda really got inspiration to make little code for arduino that starts and stops fan when player tilts their head enough to left or right just to make the feeling like there is wind blowing on your face when looking outside the window. I wonder if it is possible to link the headset tilting for software that controls arduino. Also I agree, VR games should really embrace the simulation feeling of games and try to avoid cheap jedi powers and floating UIs when it is damn easy to make actual items that can be used to check UI notifications and so on. Like why no one have made tutorials and notifications in VR actually happen so that your mobile phone (in VR, if the game has phones) rings and you have to actually pick up the phone from your VR backpack/pocket and read the notification/tutorial from there instead of having the floating text appear on your face. Small things like that are not too hard to implement and they bring so, oh so so much more into the game. Heck the game can be lacking in many things but if everything you do in the game needs to be done physically by moving your body, using items and taking time to accomplish then that game fulfills the point of VR games and in most cases can actually bring lots of fun even when lacking in good story, graphics and gameplay loop. Think about train game where the world generates as you move forward. Your job is to move the train by moving soldiers around the battlefield in WWI for long distances and it can take long time to get from point A to B. There is not much in the gameplaywise other than you controlling the train realistically but there is random roguelike elements that can happen in a war and you + the troops need to eat/drink/sleep etc. and weather has a major effect on the train maintenance and warmth etc. That game would be absolute beast in VR even tho it has not much going on in story/gameplay/world building etc. you literally just play a train simulator with roguelike elements in a WWI setting and still can have tons of fun + replayability is out of this world. And lastly... what if the game was not only about trains? What if you are the mechanic in a flying fortress in WWII? What if you are flying/driving/sailing/on rails with fantasy steampunk vehicle that has realism based controls and goal is to just survive and have fun with tons of different ways to interact with items, equipment and the vehicle. That is what VR games should be about... realism, immersion and simulation. Flatscreen cannot give those for players and FS shine with other things. VR can give those but too few devs think VR from flatscreen point of view and try to mimic features flatscreen games excel at. Failing miserably ofc and causing distrust towards VR possibilities. I really need to start making games again... but this time for VR with good engine.

This is literally the best VR game review I have ever watched! I never would have considered buying this game, now it's on my wishlist lol. Thank you Rya!

First KZreadr I've seen to actually embrace the VR version of this game. To me, there is no other way to play it. I don't know how you could enjoy driving the DM3 with a mouse. This game was originally meant for VR when it was created, and I'm glad they stuck to their roots.

I play derail valley in VR and standard mode. My laptop doesn't have a DP hookup so I can't use my index when I'm at work for 17 days. It's awesome when I get to use my desktop though.

The smelling of the exhaust stack had me rolling on the floor 😂

I built a supercomputer to use VR and flight simulation. When everything was ready and the computer was built I just discovered Derail Valley.... Okay I thought I will give this a shot before I install DCS and MSFS. This has been 1 month ago and since then I did not even touch anything else :D I played like 60 hours of Derail Valley and flight sims are not even installed. :D Really good game this is, it is so much fun and the perfect combination of realism and arcade style. This became one of my favourite VR games of all time and it looks stunning with the Pimax Crystal. The only thing I could mention as negative is the performance. It does not run very well, even on a very fast computer. I need to run the Pimax on 70% resolution and it looks and play fine, but whenever I enter the Station to get jobs it runs 30fps or something.

Easy way to remember the controls is forward is always stop. push brakes forward to apply, push throttle forward to idle. Makes it easy to remember in a panic. you wanna stop? push all the levers forward.

it took me tweaking the VR settings a bit, but motion sickness is minimal for this game, at least for me, ive played for a lot of hours and havent gotten sick, i found turning a fan on me seems to help

I play it standing but there are ways to emulate standing in VR games inside of your steam VR setting I believe. Thanks for watching!

Very nice Video!!! Love the game so much. I bought the Meta Quest 2 yesterday for this game. I have relatively strong texture flicker in the environment. I raised the render resolution as much as I could, but that only helped a little. Do you have the same problem or maybe any advices please?

oh man im sorry you're dealing with that! would lower the graphics settings to the bottom then work your way up to see if they go away. i have no had that issue but also never ran the game lower than max settings.

i use quest 2 and havent had any problems im not sure what is different with the quest 3 but i used the oculus link app on pc to connect

this game is just literally rolling out if you see the future plans up to 2025 it will be more epic than it already is they will release a pay-to-DLC in the future don't be mad about it for the future releases for derail valley you need to buy it so they can improve and add more content because it's not cheap to make games think about that before you yell what I need to pay for a DLC this ppl already done a ton of good work what not many B games do on release yes some hick-ups here and there but hey not major like other games these days they realized VR and a keyboard at the same that's already impresses think about this also they are working on this since 2018 yes 5 YEARS I m really hooked to this game and thinking about to buy VR because this game deserve it

The Meta Quest 3 is the newest one. But you will need a Gaming PC to get this game on steam. it cannot be played on Meta Quest alone.

I use the meta quest 2. Glad you enjoyed the video! Keep in mind what is being captured here is the desktop resolution and not exactly the fidelity you see in the head set but this game still looks great in VR

In VR you can see your hands by default. No mod needed. If you are just playing with mouse and keyboard on your screen then there are no hands

Both steamers can have boiler explosions. But it is probably quicker to happen with the 060 because it is a tank engine and can't carry much water, making it easy to run the boiler dry on long trips. Interesting note - if you run the boiler completely out of water (and drop all your coal so you don't blow it up) once you refill your water tank it will take approx 1/3 of your entire water tank to get water back in the sight glass

How do you get derale valley in VR

Waiting for the quest 3 to try this in person Edit: Tried this and it's not that great. Bluuury! Even in Ultra. 1080p monitor feels like 4k after 10 mins in VR.

Your VR graphics are incredible what are your specs? Also I love this game in VR, only way to play.

thanks! i built my pc just for these type of games to get the most out of them! Im running an MSI RTX 4090 GPU, Intel i9 13900k processor and 128gigs of Corsair Dominator Platinum ram. Overkill for sure lol. Glad you enjoy the game in VR too! it makes is so much more fun!
