What Causes Dark Spots On Skin?

'Dark spots on the skin', 'melasma', 'post inflammatory hyperpigmentation' - what ARE these things? If you've ever wondered what the causes of dark spots on the skin are, watch this!
In this video, Dr. Syed talks through the 3 most common causes of dark spots on the skin, also known as 'hyperpigmentation', that he sees in his clinic. He explains what normal pigmentation in the skin looks like, why we sometimes get dark spots, and what the potential treatment strategies for these are.

What an amazing explanation!! Thanks for this video. I just discover what’s going on to my husband (post-inflammatory hyperpigmentation) and to my mom (melasma). Any doctor hasn’t diagnosed to my husband about his current skin condition, and he has visited a lot of dermatologists. This content is gold.

PIH is extremely common so I doubt multiple dermatologists didn’t recognize what it was. Did your husband specifically request the derm address it? If not, they are likely not to mention it unless it bothers you because it’s mostly a cosmetic concern. Same with cherry angiomas or solar lentingines. They know what it is. They just don’t both addressing it or “diagnosing” it if it doesn’t bother you and you don’t specifically request to have it corrected.

Just live with it? He says yes. Sigh…..😢
