What Car Max Offered Me on a 2017 GS Collectors Edition?

Автокөліктер мен көлік құралдары

I wanted to take the Corvette GS collectors Edition down to not only car max but also to a dealer to see what the trade in value was vs cash value. Now you could definitely get more doing a private sale but you open yourself up to allot of possible issues. Hope you enjoy the video.

The difference between sticker or what you actually paid for the car....and what it's worth.....the depreciation in less than a year is CRAZY!!!SO.....the car is a keeper. You've taken the huge depreciation hit....might as well keep the car and spread the depreciation out over the next few years. Like you've always said....GET OUT AND DRIVE YOUR CARS.

Chuck, thanks for doing the video. Yes any time one buys a new car - just sign your name makes it a used car. You can't sell back even with out driving a mile, it's used. I ( WE ) bought the LAST G S Collector Conv. Being that it will only get me a few K more. Yes I have had it out in rain, on vacation. Only around 7000 miles. I have a lot with mine, extended coverage for 6 yrs, tire wheel, which saved me from buying a rear tire. Those are almost $600. We have Xpel all over, and even more with the Vet. Have extra set of G S wheels, winter tires, original will crack from cold. Great Vet, 140 and you don't feel it, more peddle to go. They fly. Thanks again Chuck

Hi Chuck, It's true a lot of upgrades on any car they will give you a fraction of what was originally paid for. Some things they won't even give you any value as they say that most buyers don't value it. The funny thing is had someone traded in a GS exactly like yours. Car max would resale it on their lot for every little thing that the GS is equipped with including what they did not give any value on your trade, will be on their window sticker from the blue book under retail value. Obviously, when you have a special edition or a Fully loaded car, it is in your best interest to sell it private party. Most buyers may be looking for that exact car and are well-educated and will pay you that premium. In my opinion. Car Max is good for a base equipped car that your in a hurry to sell or trade into another dealership.

Thank You! And the Electric Blue interior is mesmerizing. That said, and as you mentioned the dealer/max stated, every box you tic on an order form, or option listed on the window sticker of an off the rack vette, is just throwaway money, not taken into account by the dealer at trade-in. car max explained to me, as they offered me 39% of original value on a 10 year old garage queen with 2300 miles, is that the estimators go by up to the minute auction results, if a number is listed in Kelly, NADA, Black Book etc, even the online versions, it is probably stale old news. dealerships and car max are tied into subscription networks reporting real time car auction results. lessons learned, my new C7 is averaging a thousand miles a month, and that is even with stay at home time on rainy days!

Yea, there is a steep drop off when you take ownership of a corvette. Unfortunately it’s a car that the majority of people only get to drive for a few months a year because of weather. He said the value would be a little higher in the spring but we are going into fall and those values go down.

Out of all the American cars that are made the Chevrolet Corvette holds its value the best. And like you said Chuck, they don't look at things or take into account the add ons or personal touches that are added onto the car. But your wife's Corvette is very impressive and I think you can get over $60,000 if you sold it privately.

Thought it would be just under $60k - as you said CarMax is in business to do business. The one thing to keep in mind is that they would cut you a check rather than at some dealers who would "offer more" in a "trade situation" is because they'll make up the difference in the deal... I've done well at CarMax selling and not so well selling to them - all depends on what they are looking for at the time. A similar priced (purchased new) SUV would likely do better at CarMax because of it's ability to be sold quickly. Great video Chuck - keep up the great content!

  • @aarongentile7232
    @aarongentile72325 жыл бұрын

Great video Chuck! Thank you very much for doing that, that's very useful information. I find it very interesting that CarMax is willing to pay more than the dealership. Of course the dealership will probably hit you for 4 new tires like you mentioned, which may have something to do with the price differences. If I may ask --what did you pay for the Z51 package? & How much extra did u pay for the Aero package? edit- I just received something in the mail today from the dealership where I purchased my 2012 GS a few years back. The flyer I received gave me a number and said text them and they would respond immediately with an amount they were willing to pay me for my car.. it's a very basic Grand Sport and only has about 23,000 miles on it (I'm 2nd owner & it's always been kept in a heated garage and never driven in the snow) Their response was " we need your Corvette and are willing to pay up to $23,085. Visit our dealership now" ..... geeze, I'd paid $23 grand for my car in a heartbeat!!

  • @petercarey6883

Now this was interesting Chuck. Glad you also got a number from the dealer. At $55k, less another $2k for tires, I'd be tempted to purchase it, even though it's an automatic. LOL When you take into account today's reality, it's not a bad price. Remember, technically it's a two year old Vette. I'm guessing, as you've previously stated, the ZR1 is going nowhere other than on the highway and back in your garage. But with this exercise, are we lead to believe you're considering selling/trading it in for a C8, or in preparation of a purchase? Now THAT would be interesting. I think we also need to hear from Kary on this one. LOL Save the Wave.

There are tax benefits to trading it in versus selling it outright. Ex. $100,000.00 new car minus $55,000 trade-in means you'll pay sales tax on only $45K. In NJ (7%), you'd pay $3150 with the trade vs. $7000 if you sell and then buy without the trade.

2200 miles. You've hardly driven the car. My vette was $80,000 for the original owner, i got it for $51,000 with 5500 miles and drive it daily. Depreciation is horrible for the original owner, but for me it was an awesome deal. I just can't imagine why people put so few miles on them. These cars are meant to be driven. The C7 is an amazing driving machine.

Chuck.. there has never been a car with as much expectation on it than the C8. There is a good chance initially it will disappoint IMO. I think its highly unlikely the early ones will NOT have reliability issues. Everyone on the back of a tilt-bed will initially be plastered on the pages of a car mag. If the C7 is discontinued completely, people might be shocked with a value increase on them.

I think GM made too many C7 Corvettes in my opinion. The market is flooded with them. These are cars that drop not 5-10K when you drive off the lot but 15-20k. If you are keeping the car it’s not going to affect you but if you are keeping for a year or two will be felt. I hope you are right on the C8.

Just look at C7 Corvette used prices and you'll see why C7s won't be depreciating very quickly after the initial first two year hit.

Wow i never thought they would go that high. I'd still keep it lol. I never buy a car and then start worrying about resale value. Let the Porsche and Ferrari owners do that.

After owning a 2018 Stingray for 9 months, I am shocked at how the car value has gone down. If the ratio is the same, the value of mine should now be about $33,000.

And that's why I never do buy new cars! ...... $$,$$$ hit in less than a year? .... I'd feel suicidal no matter what make of car! Nowadays I only buy used cars from owners like yourself Chuck. Owners that drape their cars with every factory extra. Especially owners like you Chuck that look after them and clean them in the way that you do. Folk has been known to say i'm like a bird of prey for spotting clean low mileage bargains .... Good day to you sir! By the bye .. I prefer this collector Edition Corvette over the ZR1 you have! ....ZR1 still a nice car tho!

You overlooked the Sales Tax value. Tennessee has a high sales tax. 55G off of 85G would mean you would only owe tax on 30G.

Man that’s crazy only 55k for that beautiful ride, I was very disappointed couple of months ago when I took in my 2016 ZO6 3LZ Zo7 package convertible with an auto, it only had 5400 miles, garage kept, I really took care of that car where the Chevy manager was surprised to see how mint my car was, but I was only offered $64k on a car that I paid $112k for plus tax in July of 2015

Chuck I’ve had numerous Corvettes including the collectors edition 2014 Stingray. The dealers couldn’t care less if it’s a “ special “ edition. All they do care about us what options, how many miles and what the condition of the car is. Sometimes if you trade in soon, there’s not even a baseline number! Believe me, you’ll never get what it’s worth, even if you’re trading!! $55,000 and what did you pay for it?? At least a $15,000 loss for 2000 miles driven. $7.00 per mile. Hey Chuck I put brand new tires before bringing to the dealer for a valuation. Guess what, they aid I needed tires!!! What a joke! Also, they take off about 2 grand for tires. I told them to take off about $1200 if new tires were needed since you can get them from the Tire Rack for a little more than that. As a dealer they can get them for even less.
