What Bridgerton Should Have Learned from Brandy & Paolo Montalban’s CINDERELLA

Фильм және анимация

Following the release of Bridgerton Season 3 focusing on Colin Bridgerton (Luke Newton) and Penelope Featherington (Nicola Coughlan), it was finally time to revisit the most iconic 'Blasian Solidarity' trio of the Y2K era: "Cinderella" (starring Brandy and Paolo Montalban), "Rush Hour" (starring Jackie Chan and Chris Tucker), and "Romeo Must Die" (starring Jet Li and Aaliyah).

I was happy for Bridgerton to be racially diverse and set in the 1800s with no explanation because I thought of it as a fantasy. The minute they brought race relations it became something else entirely. When it became evident that the writers had no range to discuss these issues it took me out.

I’m sorry darling, but she doesn’t have the range!” Which apparently Bassey really did say about Tina Turner when Goldeneye came out lol. But in this case it’s true, Bridgerton doesn’t have the range. “We were two separate societies until a king fell in love with one of us” is sure a weird way to suggest systemic racism underpinned by hundreds of years of the transatlantic slave trade was solved overnight by the love of a single rich (mentally ill) man. 😬

As a black woman, I just can't bring myself to watch bridgerton fully because I know that I am going to nitpick it because of the diversity problem. I watched season 1 and after THAT scene with Simon and Daphne I was done because that scene was too much on the surface. But when I thought about it some more....it kinda exemplifies the whole race dilemma and I started to unpack all the ways that Bridgeton fails it bipoc cast because there isn't enough bipoc people behind the camera. For examples: - THAT SCENE with Simon and Daphne (imo) kinda subconsciously veers too closely into the feitshzation of black bodies in the 1800s for the pleasure of white people and the lack of agency to say 'no' for fear of punishment. - how all of the bridgeton women besides Eloise has been romantically linked to black men (it kinda giving Kardashians and we loved mixed children lol.) - most of the women of color on bridgeton (including lady danbury, marina, Edwina, the dressmaker, Charlotte etc) always has a bittersweet ending to their stories. They can't never seem to get a true happy ending. Queen Charlotte is the most powerful woman on the show, but her husband has gotten sick and can't remember her most of the time. And I suppose to say 'Yass queen. wear that wig.' No it's truly sad that on a romance story that we have to watch a powerful woman see her husband become mad and the only time we see her happy is like 50 years pior and the fact that lady danbury doesn't have a lover most of her life like Lady Tilly with Benedict is mind blowing. - the fact that most of the dark-skinned black men meet horrible fates (John, Simon's father, lord Danbury) - the fact that we didn't have Kate's wedding to Anthony WHEN she is marrying the head of the main family on the show. The show is called Bridgeton and Kate is becoming the Lady of the entire family. But we get the wedding of the two white heroines. - the desire of keeping Will and Alice on the show because they are the only black ppl on the principal cast but not giving enough of a storyline to justify their inclusion.

You should add "A lack of diverse couples" to this list. You mean to tell me that for all Bridgerton's bragging about being diverse and using an interracial royal relationship as a lazy excuse for desegregation, there aren't more diverse couples in the show? Why is every romantic lead couple between a POC and a white person? Don't POCs date and marry each other too? The Black relationships we get in the entire show (Lady Danbury's marriage, Simon's parents) are also usually terrible. But between Penelope and Colin's dynamic dumpster fire, and Cressida's parents' bad marriage, I guess it "balances out". I agree with all your points 100%, and I haven't even watched the show. I've only seen clips of the shows, press tours, and watched video essays about Bridgerton. But I have no interest in watching it, and I'm glad cause I'd be nitpicking too.

Cinderella with Brandy as the lead justified my feelings as a child. I feel a bit ashamed that societally we still have to tell black women that they can date any men they want that also want them. I think every woman is suppose to praise white men in particular because they have control over their own image and they paint themselves as the most manly and desirable. What is not taught, what’s taboo even, is finding black women attractive. Non black men, and even some black men, are taught to not allow themselves to find black women attractive. Thank you for bringing up the vast disparity of press for Kanthony. Everytime I bring this up I get attacked by fans that I’m jealous and I’m not. I am Tamil South Asian and I get emotional seeing Simone Ashley as a lead in the season. She and Johnny didn’t get the same measure of press or photo shoot for Season 2 or Season 3 which had massive promotion. And then for their characters ,Kanthony, have had NO milestones on screen and have ultimately been written off the show. Additionally (if I’m not mistaken) in Season 2 fans were told that they didn’t shoot or plan a wedding for Kanthony because it’s not possible to film two weddings in one season but then they turn around and do that exactly in Season 3! It’s honestly soured my outlook of Shondaland and Bridgerton because why aren’t they good enough to get any of that but the white leads are? It seems like POC’s get all the coverage for suffering but when it’s time for celebration there’s all of a sudden no room.

I’m not South Asian so I cannot relate to anyone who is but it still rubbed the wrong way when I realised that there wasn’t going to be a wedding. The entire promotional campaign for S2 prided itself on providing representation for South Indian people but when it was time to deliver on that there were crickets. It makes no sense that the show runners and writers for this show would spend time on a fake wedding with Anthony and Edwina when they knew that it was not gonna go anywhere. On top of that we don’t really know much about Kate compared to Anthony and she’s marrying into the family the show is about😭 It makes no sense that we don’t see any of their milestones onscreen like the other 2 couples. No wedding/wedding night, no honeymoon or the baby, despite that being their whole storyline for S3. The promotion on its own was so bad. It looks like they didn’t believe that a South Asian woman would be able to carry her own season. All the promo was about that stupid ‘love triangle’ and they didn’t even try to make it about our main couple or give memorable promotion that highlighted the main couple.

I felt strongly that the show missed an opportunity to do better for the Mondriches and Madame DLC. I really thought that there would be more exploration of the Mondriches so that we as the audience would get to know them (and love them even more as a result!) and Benedict would learn something meaningful from them that would better set him up to be the (hopefully) leading man of season 4. And for Madame DLC, I thought we could learn more about her love for fashion and creating, the dilemma of having to make things she might not necessarily love but it’s what the paying customer wants so she has to do that, and then Penelope could also have her exploration running alongside that as it applies to Operation Lady Whistledown. Instead we got SCRAPS for both of those concepts. 🙃

I feel like it’s such a waste of a very iconic character and makes her feel like she has nothing important keeping her rin the show. Also with Kanthony, these writer need to give Kate a proper story that doesn’t just revolve around her husband. She feels like a love interest when she is the head of the family that the show is about. We can get more of her backstory, bonding with other people in society like Alice. I just want her to be more than just Anthony’s wife.

I think that it was imperative for one of her spoiled stepsisters, Minerva in particular being black like Brandi, to show her blackness wasn't the motivation for her oppression and exploitation by her stepmother, played by Bernadette Peters who is white. In addition to showing Black women of high status, like Queen Whoopi and Godmother Whitney. Bc it also would have been questionable if Minerva who is part of the comedic slapstick and physical humor duo, was the only other core character bc it could feel like black cast members and characters were subject to abuse or the butt of the jokes.

I think that I may be able to offer some more context to the tensions between the Black and Asian communities that during the LA riots. 13 days after the video was released of the police attacking Rodney King another travesty of justice occurred in LA, specifically between the Asian American and African American communities, where a Korean woman who ran a convenience store fatality shot a 15 year old girl named Latasha Harlins for supposedly shoplifting. The Korean woman, Soon Ja Du, was sentenced to 10 years in prison for voluntary manslaughter but the sentence was suspended to community service and a measly $500 fine. The injustice of this case added to the emotions that boiled over during the riot and is said to have contributed to so many Korean owned businesses being burned during the riots. A short documentary about Latasha Harlins was made into an Oscar nominated film in 2019 which is how I first learned about this part of history.

I just felt as though it wouldn’t be productive for me to overly nitpick LD’s material for this video when I can just as easily redirect the train of thought to “You do realise if there was a strategy from the beginning of being suuuuuuper multiracial like Whitney’s Cinderella, this would probably be a much less heated discussion” 😂🤷🏻‍♀️

@@LadyJenevia What is exciting about your statement that Black viewers are not a monolith is that Black viewership/audience now includes Black people from all over the world from France and Germany, to the US and Canada to the Caribbean and to Africa and the Near East and beyond. Nigeria and South Africa have a budding film industry and increasingly the importance of themes, character development and the semiotics of the camera image is enlarging the conversation. Because of the racism and colorism, featurism and texturism in America, Black viewers may not be in agreement with certain conclusions, but we do, I believe, recognize patterns. So I fascinated by what Africans think when they watch Bridgerton or what Black Parisian or Brazilian thinks. Black people are not a monolith. But Black people need to understand how we are perceived through the power of images and storytelling.

The vibes were so far removed from what I want from Regency Romance fiction. I was honestly baffled because Nicola and Luke N have had YEARS to build a genuine banter and friendship so in theory, they could have done SO MUCH with that and it didn't feel like they fully embraced the FRIENDS part of the "friends to lovers" concept. I will say though that I've had fun poking around the Polin tag as a 'fix it' to give them the cute vibes that I wanted to see for their season. If they don't fix the vibes for season 4 I will need to see what sort of renewal announcement is given (for how many seasons, which couple is season 5, etc.) to determine how much or how little I will cover the show. Right now my plan for the hiatus is only to do AT MOST 1-2 Bridgerton videos per month. It's really more so like 1 video per month (originally the July video was going to be Francesca's book but that video is taking a lot longer to finish than I thought it would which is why this video came out first 😂). But also, there are plenty of Bridgerton video topics I have on my to-do list that are not about season 3. I feel like I've made more or less all the points I want to make about season 3 (and my issues with it) that if I'm going to carry on talking about the Bridgerton series I would rather put the energy into topics from the show that I LIKE. 🤭

Even their in world explanation doesn’t work because do we really think that in a single generation all backlash of interracial relationships would just be gone? Violet was almost a teenager when society removed segregation, and yet her children have zero backlash, even from the older member of the ton, for intermarrying? As a white woman married to a black man in America, where society has been integrated for considerably longer than a generation, and who has faced a lot of backlash for my choice of spouse, their explanation is illogical. I would much rather they took the Cinderella approach and just cast people who were fantastic actors and let us really enjoy the story without explanations

Regarding the wrap party that Jonathan and Simone paid for, it was published by Daily Mail. For seasons 1 and 3, Netflix/Shondaland paid for those seasons wrap parties but for S2 they only paid for sandwiches after wrap. I am also glad you pointed out the discrepancy between the press for the all white couple of S3 vs past seasons especially S2. People love to blame covid but they had all the supporting actors doing photoshoots and press all over the place, covid cannot be used as an excuse. Heck they had Rege and Phoebe do a photoshoot for British Vogue few months before the first season's release in 2020, literally the first year of covid when there were no vaccines available. It's very clear they just didn't want to promote Kanthony thus Jonathan and Simone as the main leading pair of the season. And I can't help but see how it is most likely due to racism (since Phoebe and Nicola seem to have gotten so much more press as the romantic female leads unlike Simone) and homophobia with them not caring to promote Jonathan and Simone since they can't push the pr dating agenda that the Bridgerton pr team seems to have pushed for Nicola and Luke. Like for a romance show, you would think that the leading actors would have gotten at least one photoshoot together but nope they couldn't even bother doing that for them. They just didn't care to promote Simone and Jonathan as the leading couple and it stinks of bigotry especially when Netflix/Shondaland have a history of treating their non-white and queer actors unfairly.

Also, they can still look good together in a photoshoot, what does that have anything to do with fake-dating for PR? Dress them up in some exquisite fashion and have them pose! I still want someone with SENSE (and a whole lot of money and influence) to pair them together for another rom com/romance story. If Meg Ryan and Tom Hanks can do two Rom Coms together and Julia Roberts and George Clooney can play married couples 20+ years apart, WHAT MORE IS THERE TO UNDERSTAND? 😂

I also felt that the writers did not play fair with the storyline in season 2. I love season 2 and I adore Anthony and Kate. Their chemistry is electric. I wasn't too keen on the Viscount in his book - I think Lady Jenevia called him a toxic caveman, which summed him up and Kate was just too compliant. Their show characters were much more suited. However, the story itself was rather bland and too much like Season 1 (forced marriage). It certainly needed some changes to liven it up, but why did the writers make it SO complicated. It really did require careful watching and judging by many posts on Facebook and on KZread a great many people totally misunderstood the story and thus misjudged the characters, turning Kate and Anthony into villains, which they certainly were not. It saddens me that so many viewers became haters and I blame the writers for that, Those of us who took the trouble to follow the storyline carefully, were treated to a beautiful love story, superbly acted.

I am not a book purist so when I saw them change some storylines I wasn’t fazed. I do feel like they didn’t have to drag the love triangle when they could’ve focused more on their PTSD as individuals and their inner conflict that comes with choosing your heart over everyone else. Even though its still my preferred season out of all 3 its still disappointing to see how the writing made our leads look selfish and inconsiderate.

Season 2 of Bridgerton is the best for me, I will not be rewatching season 3 and I highly doubt I will watch season 4 because how they wasted Benedict in season 3, and kind of jacked up Francesca and John’s story. I love diversity and Whitney Houston’s Cinderella, Romeo Must die( it annoyed me that they didn’t kiss!) and Rush Hour are three films that I enjoyed and still enjoy! A great video essay Lady Jenevia! 😊

I am curious how the really casual audience is responding to season 3 because I’m assuming they don’t have THAT many complaints if they’re still tuning in to watch it. TBH I think the 2 year gaps between seasons are more harmful than the issues I addressed in this video. People grow, evolve, and move on to newer things. I don’t mind doing ONE video per season whenever a new one drops but if seasons 4 onward stick with the melodrama angle I won’t be emotionally invested anymore. 😅

Also, I have something else to say. That's all I've been thinking for a few years now and not enough people talk about it. Especially the "marrige ends racism", most of my friends have either both or at least one parent black and more than one has spoke about suffering racism from their own grandparents who don't accept their children married a different skin color. If imeddiate family can be left unconvinced in situations like these, how do you want me to believe a whole country would be ok with it? They claim "fantasy", but it's too close to home to suspend disbelief. And mind you that my country's history tells that black people were incentivated to marry white people so the next generations would be "less black"(no need to say that it backfired), so even being common to see interacial couples everywhere prejudice very much still exists centurys later, one couple, the very same year of their marrige in a vrry white england, fixed it all? They use the "it's a fantasy" card for everything and never really laid out their worldbulding properly, which shoved them to corners they didn't antecipate. Other races families (asians, indians, blacks)are valued because a black woman married a white man even if other races had nothing to do with it, because fantasy. But gay people are closeted because "the time period". The aristocracy living of taxes and exploiting other people to live very superfulus lives is not talked about, and they talk like we talk today, because fantasy. But women suffer sexism because "time period". They don't draw a line where it ends, they don't know the rules of their own world, they keep contraditing themselves, all because they want to explain everything when they could've just go with stuff and let people enjoy being creative as well (and yes, a real colorblind cast would be a good way to go no questions needed), that goes from the ton itself to the costuming, the formal situations and manners (practically inexistent at this point). They lack solid ground.

Literally the more they try to explain things the worse it gets. All you have to do is Jane Austen except in Elizabeth Bennet’s family, everyone is a different ethnicity/culture a la Whitney Houston’s Cinderella. THAT’S IT. And crank the romantic yearning and banter up to an 11 out of 10, add some NSFW scenes (that only appear after enough emotional / relationship buildup) and you’re good!

I always love watching your videos, and a point I would like to add on is their choice for the “explaining diversity in the period drama” leaves questions/opportunities they are not willing to answer or follow through on. For example, I think you’ve mentioned on your season 2 review the issue of these British ppl going to India, and how colonization is still probably happening but we the audience are supposed to ignore that. As someone who studies ethnic studies, it’s hella jarring to ignore that a lot of these wealthy ppl including BIPOC would’ve gotten their wealth from slavery/colonization. Another is we don’t get more into was cultures these characters come from besides the Sharma family and that’s because Simone pushed for it. For the Black characters i asked my friend what is the culture for Black Brits as I understand that it is not the same for Black Americans, and she explained it’s the mixture of African and Caribbean cultures due to majority being from immigrant families. This made me think of other cultures like what does different Asian cultures in Britain are like. I would like to see that on my screen if I’m supposed to understand that racism is not an unheard thing in this universe and from Queen Charlotte is actually a plot point. I also need them to hire more writers of color for these stories. And I agree with your opinion on how they should’ve went with the Bridgerton/Featheringtons being a multi-racial families because I think it would eliminate the scarcity mentality of which race/ethnicity gets to be leading lady/man. It allows for everyone to get a chance to see themselves on screen. Sorry for the long comment, I really enjoy your videos, they are always so engaging with the topics you introduce. Thank you for creating them.

Yes to soooooooo much of this. The Regency Romance setting was always riddled with privilege stemming from especially dubious origins but we love to get into those stories because it’s just about viiiiiiiiiibes. I remember being a child and hearing Mrs B go on and on about “5000 a year” and “10000 a year” for Mr Bingley and Mr Darcy’s income and thinking “What is their job? I’ve never seen them go to work ONCE” but then I just didn’t prod it further because it was ultimately about the romantic viiiiiiiibes and hilarious family banter (only the 1995 version had that, to be clear, the whole family was hilarious). 😂 All we need to love the Bridgerton characters are romantic vibes and hilarious family banter (and heartwarming moments too). It doesn’t need to be overcomplicated, it’s not the right premise to tackle those topics the way they would need to be addressed.

Like I know shondaland is known for its drama but I’ve always felt that even Shonda’s other productions i.e Scandal, Greys Anatomy etc don’t do a good job in tackling the themes of race and class. And for a romance show like Bridgerton adding in those elements that the show runners are not entirely comfortable with telling or and let’s face it, can fully authentically understand will just make your viewers more upset in my opinion.

Firstly, yes, love romeo must die and Whitney's cinderella. Go to happy films from my childhood. Thank you for talking about them and also give me more passion projects. Also hell yes to S4 giving me more vibes. The actors have beautiful friendships and chemistry as a family, I want that on screen!!!! So the bridgerton discourse. You are right Jonny and Simone paid for their season wrap party as netflix wasn't throwing one. But that was Nov 2021 in UK, we were still dealing with covid issues (I know my work was hampered by an outbreak following a team gathering at that time) and I suspect due to the production shutting down apparently 3 times during filming due to outbreaks, netflix probably thought (wrongly) that it was irresponsible to promote a social gathering by throwing a wrap party in case it caused a superspreader event (those were fun). Regarding the lack of press and tour for S2, Jonny Bailey was involved with a westend play from Feb 2022 through till June 2022, doing 8 shows a week over 6 days. This massively limited his availability for press. Throw in the drama surrounding his play co-star catching covid then ending up dropping out the play, he probably didn't want to do too much press dodging questions about that. This was at a time people wanted to get back to in person appearances rather than zoom ones. Why him and simone didn't do the junket alone I don't know, the show seemed to push the unnecessary triangle between the sisters. In both situations there is more to it than it seems initially but netflix do not get off scot free, in both cases they could've done better (reimbursed Jonny and simone for the party, even if they had organised it, they shouldn't be covering the cost, done more to give Jonny and Simone some promo or where jonny couldn't do promo e.g. in America, let's have both Simone and Charithra talk about being sisters) We will have to see what happens when we eventually reach promo for S4. We know Luke Thompson, likely lead of S4 doesn't do social media and is guarded when it comes to talking about anything other than his work (good for him) will be interesting to see who his costar is and if the 2 of them agree to undertaking a press tour or have the opertunity to do so. I'd love to know how much of press is in actors contract and how much is them willing/agreeing to do it. Also will netflix go all out for press following S4 when in some ways this press tour could've been so big to ensure the numbers stay up so they guarantee the S5&6 renewal. If that renewal comes soon after they get the final 91 day viewing figures, we'll know why they promo'd the hell out of it, they needed numbers for the renewal guarantee

I think some people are averse to the use of the word "colour-blind" because they associate that with people in charge being exclusionary by going "anyone can audition" but then they don't think enough about diversity in the sense that you do need to keep it in mind so that you proactively pursue being more diverse, inclusive, not falling into tropes/stereotypes that could have easily been avoided, etc. When people say they want "colour-blind" casting like Cinderella (1997) we mean that we want it to go SO FAR FORWARD that you break new ground towards creating a truly multiracial ensemble at every level of the story (main characters, supporting leads, extras, etc.) and creating multiracial families without explaining the reason why the family is multiracial because the explanation really ISN'T NECESSARY for the story to play out as is.

@@LadyJenevia yes! When I was super young, I lived in the Middle East, and as a small child, I didn't register that I was "different" (I'm white), until the adults started pointing it out to me. And like, that's what I want in shows like Bridgerton and why I fell in love with Whitney's Cinderella. Worlds where people don't feel the need to point out "oh you're white/black/Asian/Arab" and instead everyone is just human. Because we are! Which is not to say that we don't need shows and stories that do tackle systemic racism. We absolutely do. But we need to present a vision for a world where race is not a defining feature of how we perceive and treat each other, as well as challenge the ways in which we currently do perceive and treat each based on race. Have you watched Space Sweepers? I don't know if sci-fi is your thing, but I adored the way the universal translator was depicted: everyone got to speak their own language, and they all understood each other. Like, the "solution" to differences (cultural, linguistic, racial, etc) is not to make everyone the same, but to not let those differences become barriers. Plus, the villain is a white capitalist, which I appreciated.

Oh, and to follow up, just thinking of Star Trek: I loved that in OG Star Trek you had Nichelle Nichols, George Takei and a character who was meant to be Russian in such prominent roles without their races and heritages being A Thing™️. And I hated when Discovery came out that the marketing made it A Thing™️ that Michael is black. They should have just let Star Trek continue to be a world where race was irrelevant to the roles characters could have, either within Star Fleet or in the story-telling. Did earlier Star Treks get it all right? No, of course not, but isn't the point to always be learning and growing? And, with Star Trek, to again be creating a vision of a world where systemic racism has been undone.

I work in tv production and the wrap party happens at the end of filming and includes talent and crew. Typically factored into the “expendables” part of the location section for a show’s budget, they can be super expensive ranging from a couple of thousand to tens of thousands of dollars for an evening party at a restaurant or on location with catering. Talent usually don’t fund these parties because they usually host their own but showrunners tend to pay for them more often. It’s a tax write-off for them. I have no idea how many people work on this series but wrap parties tend to only include crew on site for filming and not post production, so 2/3 of the crew participate. Hadn’t heard the rumor about Bailey and Ashley paying for it but when episodes cost $7mil (average) to film, that’s wild to know they possibly didn’t have enough budget for a wrap party.

I really enjoy how thorough this video was. When I first started watching Bridgerton I wasn't even thinking about race until they mention it. Honestly, I thought it was going to be like Brady Cinderella where in that universe that fantasy world race didn't exist. I love how you brought up one of my favorite movies. Hearing of all this reminds me of a book that turned into movie the sun is also a star. I personally prefer the book but yes, I love that you mention ways to properly executing cross culture friendships whether it's in a form of blasian solidarity or other interracial relationship. I love a good movie or book that knows how to allow the character to be a character without restricting them because they form their own conclusion or fear that it would not be receive well in the real world. Or because of their close mindedness and bias falseness. It reminds me of a character I love in a show but since the writers had a biased opinion of their race, they didn't allow the character to be a character. Someone did an essay video called The "Updateable" BIPOC CO-STAR. Which goes more into depth on topics like these. But it does rise an issue later down in the storyline and cause the character to be singled out, which no longer makes sense not only for the character but for the whole plot of story.

Whitney Houston's Cinderella is the GOAT production period. The fact that the production team was so on point and made sure the background actors also relected the level of diversity we saw in the lead cast, it just felt natural, and as a Bay Area native (shoutout Oakland) it reflected the world in which I grew up. It would've been amazing if Shondaland's production team had "dreamed bigger" and went with the Brandy style colorblind casting, with Black, Asian, Indian, etc. actor's making up the Bridgerton family. But hopefully this is a jumping off point instead of a foot note. Also here for the Blasian movie trifecta, Romeo Must Die and Rush Hour were some of my favs growing up. Would've also loved to see a mention of Mr. Malcolm's List, tangential representation and a delightful movie.

The earliest i could find is a pretty recent Reddit post linking to a Daily Mail article with picture of the cast leaving the party and there was a screenshot of a tweet but I can't find it anymore. All I could find after that was an interview where Johnathan Bailey and Simone Ashley said they had another wrap party that they organised at a bowling alley but there were no mention of Netflix (and why would they during promotion). Then I couple days ago i was listening to with Nicola and Luke with the BBC where they were talking about the press tour and how extensive it was she mentioned that it was their first bridgerton season post covid restrictions and that Jonathan Bailey had been doing a play during the season 2 roll out (like Luke Thompson this year). That all i could find after that it's not much and i doesn't really change the optics. P.S: I was going to say your shirt is giving Romeo + Juliet and that not a bad thing at all.

I fully believe that if there is hard evidence publicly available about this, online teamwork will track it down. 😂 As for my shirt, aaaaaaaaaah, I’m assuming you’re referencing the 1996 Romeo + Juliet I’m taking that as the absolute HIGHEST compliment because that’s a Baz Luhrmann film, he’s one of my absolute favourite directors, and his wife Catherine Martin does the costumes for all his movies and she is an absolute icon, truly, a legend in her field! 😍🔥

Istg this is all the things I like and hits all my favourite nostalgia notes, only way it could’ve been better is if it somehow included the interracial love story featured in The Golden Child (1986)

Fantastic video!!! Not sure why YT recommended it to me, but Im glad they did. Sidenote: In my experience as an American black woman in America, Rush Hour has not aged AT ALL!!! The jokes HIT...ALL of Them. Great video. Thanks for sharing!

I’m honestly so in love with your videos. You’ve somehow created a video for a very niche concept that included some of my favorite 90s/00s movies. This is a video I didn’t even realize I needed until now. Thank you for your dedication and hard work 🥰

I LOOOOOOOOOOVE THAT MOVIE and myself and another stan of it (and all the geniuses involved like Baz Luhrmann, Catherine Martin, Austin Butler), we have been miffed seeing everyone bully the movie and Austin only to start to tiptoe back towards them… NO, WE’LL BE GATEKEEPING NOW CAUSE WE REMEMBER ALL THE NASTY THINGS YOU SAID (though this is a cycle Baz has with literally every movie he’s made where people talk trash and then you fast forward a certain number of years and then people correctly acknowledge it’s a classic 😭)

@LadyJenevia My spouse was listening to the Elvis video, too, and he was absolutely floored to learn that Baz has been snubbed from the Oscars! I feel the same way where I really only want to gatekeep when I felt like I had to *rightfully* defend something repeatedly. Like, you don't deserve this greatness now.

That press tour couples thing - could it be that Bridgerton might be losing steam, and the producers are trying to ramp up the appeal to the more traditional romance *novel* audience? Just a random thought. Frankly, I love the first season and was willing to suspend disbelief and enter this alternate multi-cultural universe, probably because Regé-Jean Page was so watchable. His chemistry with Pheobe was excellent, and I found the characters compelling. Seasons 2 and 1/2 of 3 (yeah, I never made it to the second half of the third season) struck me as overblown and less interesting. I dropped out. They are not taking the necessary time to develop the characters as interesting in their own right. Getting worse for me as the series wears on. (Sacrificing character development for soap opera level 'plot'.) Boring. (to me) EDIT: Cinderella -- YEEEEEESSSSS! "Love plus love equals love."

Season 2 had an entire subplot that could have (SHOULD HAVE) been scrapped but the chemistry and vibes of Jonny and Simone truly carried it to where it’s still the season I revisit the most. Romance fans just want the main couple(s) to VIBE, there is zero need to over complicate that. 😆❤️✨

Ohhh, "Romeo must Die"☺️☺️☺️ as someone who isn't American I didn't know Aaliyah was a singer and who Jet Li was. But, girl... after watching that movie, I was obsessed with both! The chemistry was of the charts, Jet Li became my top action man next to Van Damme and I wanted to grow up and look like Aaliyah.😅😅😅

The Brandy version of Cinderella is my definitive Cinderella, over any Disney version or Ella Enchanted or Ever After. (Ignoring ALW cuz fuck him.) Consider myself seated for this video. I also had this idea that if Bridgerton was gonna be authentically diverse the way that Brandy's Cinderella was, the Bridgertons could easily be a Chinese-Filipino family (they give me that vibe of being Filipino) while the Featheringtons could be a Black family.

I love your video! Well organized, with plenty of facts to back everything up. I'm all here for Blasian Solidarity. I was 9 years old when Whitney Houston's Cinderella came out and my whole entire family sat in front of the TV to watch the premiere! I was so happy to see a black Cinderella! My parents got me Brandy's Cinderella Barbie Doll for Christmas and then I was Cinderella for Halloween. Being a little black girl in a predominately white city, attending predominately white schools was tough but that movie really helped me in so many ways! Edit- New Subscriber!

This is exactly right. This is something I have been saying for years not just in Bridgerton but in Hollywood in general that they feel like they have a need to explain why people of color are on screen. like you can't just have a POC in a show or movie without explaining to there audience why they are their in the first place it's rude and I feel more racist then not putting use there in the first place. Bridgeton bated us into believing there was going to be true diversity, but all we got was 2 main white family's every season and interchangeable people of color for every season except Queen Charlotte and lady Danbary. If the Bridgeton or and Featherington where also diverse it would have meant so much more. The only other show I feel like came even close to Brady's Cinderella was " Still star crossed " from ABC that sadly got cancelled after 1 season, that didn't even get completed. Surprisingly it was a Shandland show as well. It had true color blind casting with no explanations as to why people look how they look and are related to each other, in that time period. It just was what it was.

I agree. The oddest thing about the show is that it’s seems like a white aristocratic family is being romantically invaded by all forms of “othered” people. I’m here for diversity but this show is entirely janky.

LISTEN... I've had this video sitting in my brain for YEARS but I kept having to put it off because every time I try to do something that the algorithm doesn't favour (and keep doing that because I'm being stubborn about wanting to do whatever I want) my channel would get stuck. When I finally figured out I could use Bridgerton to put the spotlight on this era of ✨CINEMA✨ (and also because Brandy and Paolo got hired to play those characters again), I jumped at the excuse. It's an iconic chapter of film history and more people need to remember that! 🥰🥳
