I'm the type of person when I start getting into something (whether it be gardening, knitting, etc.) I will almost immediately start amassing the ideal accouterment to make the hobby easier. I've learned, from experience, to research what I might need first before blowing a fortune. But sometimes, you just can't help but get all the toys ;) Having the "right" tools from the start makes a world of difference. I had a BROTHER machine tucked away but never used. Someone gave it to me a while back and I just hadn't gotten around to trying it out. Then, at the start of COVID-19, I started tinkering with masks as a way to do something productive and distract myself from the stress of everyday life. Learning something new, requiring hands-on practice, helped tremendously. I've since gotten most of the items you had listed or already had some version of them in my home from other projects. After two months of sewing nearly every day, I've picked up a lot. Also, videos like yours and other creators here on YT, have been especially helpful. Keep up the great work. You are helping so many newbies like me develop a love for a new and useful hobby!

Love your channel!😊My top supplies for a beginner would be: 1. A sturdy Mid-range sewing machine. Don't start thinking you need all the fancy stitches. Buy a machine with basic stitches but has more features such as auto threaded, auto cut or auto back stitch. 2. The largest cutting mat you can afford. 3. The best quality scissors & rotary cutters you can afford. 4. Quality long pins & wonder clips. 5. Watch the Sewing Report all the time because this young lady knows her stuff!😊

I am a beginner and after getting my sewing machine, I went to the local Wal-Mart looking for tools and supplies as they are the only source of such things in my area. I got the roller cutter, two pairs of regular scissors, a pair of fabric snips, 5 rolls of thread, a cutting pad, and a fabric measuring tape and was looking for other items, but could not find them in stock. I was looking for clips to attach to my fabric but they didn't have any and I wanted to use the safest method of keeping my fabric together. I enjoyed your video and it did give me some ideas on the things I need like tissue to copy a pattern rather than use the pattern itself to work with.

If you don't have the room for a full size ironing board, I would suggest buying a wool mat. Since I bought my wool mat, I have not used my full size ironing board.

Thanks for such an informative video. I am self taught( LOL) from the 70's. LOL Sewed for my children, they grew up and toward store bought.... put the machine away, went to school and now that I am retired, going back to my first love. Biggest expense was my original machine a Singer with all the bells and whistles died. The cost to repair it was astronomical, so hence a new machine. A Brother. I am very happy with it. I do have difficulty threading the needle. SX2080. I am going to have my eyes checked next week, hopefully it's the glasses. LOL. Going to continue on my quest. Thanks for sharing.

Thank you for doing these videos Jen. I've been using the same sewing machine I got for my high school graduation in 1977. I'm not a seamstress by any stretch of the imagination, but I've been making face masks for my family & to donate to the staff of my local nursing home & others in my community. My old Singer only had 1 presser foot & I faced an uphill battle trying to sew more than 2 layers. My masks are 4 layers. I did a lot of research before getting a Brother cs7000i. It arrived today. You mentioned being intimidated by the sewing machine at 1st. I'm excited to use it, but I'm a little overwhelmed too. I thought watching videos would help. An important sewing supply, especially if you are sewing face masks: plastic sewing clips! Don't use pins, as they will put holes in your fabric! I can't tell you how many times I've pinned fabric, then realized I pinned the wrong side. With clips, just flip the fabric over, no need to redo it. And you'll never stick yourself or break your needle with a clip! Basic supplies you will need once you have a sewing machine: bobbins (make sure they are made for your machine), really sharp scissors that fit your hand comfortably (I love my Ginghers), good quality thread (the cheap ones break or tangle up under the fabric), fabric (I agree cotton is best for beginners, & it's easy to find & usually inexpensive), plastic sewing clips, an iron, & a seam ripper. My husband used mine for something else & broke it. While waiting for a replacement to arrive, I was using a corsage pin. It works, but a seam ripper is sooo much faster & easier, & doesn't pull your fabric. It's also a good idea to have a small scissor or snips to cut your thread as you sew. I like your curved surgical scissors idea! As soon as you can afford it, invest in a long clear quilting grid ruler. I rarely quilt, but I use that for everything, especially as an edge for my rotary cutter- another tool you'll want to invest in when you can afford it. And of course, you can't use a rotary cutter without a self healing cutting mat. I lucked out & found a 24" one at a thrift shop for $4 a few yrs ago. It had a slice down the middle that was swollen with fabric lint. I gently removed all the lint I could & cleaned it, & it's as good as new. Instead of investing in marking pencils, I use regular colored pencils, white on dark colors, & red, blue, or green on lighter colors. I also made my own spool pin cushion. I traced around a spool of thread & cut it out of felt, folded it in 4ths to find the center & marked that with a pen, then used a hole punch to cut out the center. Looking forward to more of your videos!

Thank you for showing and suggesting items needed to start sewing. I am a full-on beginner, and want to learn so bad how to sew, even if it's with very small diy's. Your list of items are very helpful, and fortunately, I have a lot of what you have suggested. I will visit the thrift and goodwill stores for fabrics. I had heard of this before, but will now take it to heart.

Thank you for all of the effort and information you put into your videos! As someone who is still just beginning to learn how to sew there is a lot of information out there which can be a bit overwhelming. The way in which you present information, the level of detail, and the knowledge/experience you share makes it less daunting and manageable to process.
