What Barefoot Shoes Do To Your Feet...5 Years Later

Something really surprising happened to my feet since wearing barefoot shoes. I've worn minimalist and barefoot shoes for the last 5 years and can't imagine ever going back to wearing "normal" shoes.

    I tried this while I was overweight I was trying to get into shape and decide to grab a pair to run with. Bad idea. I collapsed my left arch in my foot. I had to wear orthotics for a year and my foot healed up nicely and I don't have to wear orthotics anymore but I always warn people about it because of how painful those first couple of months were for me. Everyone is different of course and I'm sure it was mainly because of me being overweight but still be careful guys.

    @Daniel Paredes I mean, I started waking barefoot first, and I got to 30'000 steps daily before I started running. I had no problems until I started running. But I'm 6ft3, and I was 220 lbs at the time. I think I just have a bad body type for it. I mean, I'm lean now 180 lbs but I think I would still have a bad body type for barefoot. With me being so tall I'm basically asking for foot problems.

    After trying barefoot shoes for a few months, in effort to find the root cause of my back problems, I noticed my entire body started having problems. From my Ankle, knee, hip. I went back to cushion shoes & immediately noticed a relief in what felt like my body falling apart. What I’m getting out of this, is that we need to train those muscles slowly & not transition abruptly. Of course this is from my experience! Feel free to share any knowledge! 😊

    Also, what’s beneficial for the feet may not be beneficial for the back, and vice versus. A lot of evolutionary traits end up being a trade-off of cost and reward. When humans evolved to walk upright, we gained some advantages at the cost of joint pain the longer we live. Cushioning in our shoes is something we as humans invented to help curb this evolutionary annoyance, but it comes at the cost of weakening our feet.

  • @KatieCottingham

    @KatieCottingham

    Please se a physical therapist! Or physiologist depending on where you live. Every PT I've had goes back to the point that we lose core and glute strength, as well as proper adductor strength and control which produces back pain and "weak ankles" due to lack of large muscle support. Every PT I've seen hates barefoot shoes because the research calls the claims quackery and have for over a decade, and their personal experiences as clinicians have shown they do so much more damage than good. Just because we used to walk barefoot in moderate climates, it doesn't mean our bodies were better for it. Cushioned shoes protect joints in ways that barefoot shoes or true barefoot life cannot.

    @@hamtaru I had that experience with dress shoes once. I swore to never wear shoes like that ever again. It was straight painful, and it lowkey turned me off of dress shoes completely. I would rather wear some beat up sneaks with a suit than some shiny pointy-toed dress shoes. I care about the health of my feet more than looking the part. If I can do both, great. But if I can only choose one, I choose my feet. Fortunately, I found a way to do it my way and still look good doing it. Did you know that a lot of heritage style work boots can also decently pass as formal dress shoes? They tend to have similar construction, just that work boots are more heavily built. So that's what I go with. I'd prefer a slightly wider toe-box in my Thorogoods, but they do fine overall, and I've even hiked pretty well in them.

    I’ve been in foot shaped shoes for about 6ish years now, but my feet were already too wide before that; for the wider styles of vans, doc martens, etc. I would constantly be stretching the sides of my shoes until the pinky edge of the ball of my foot was hanging off the sole slightly despite them fitting lengthwise. My UGG boots were the only shoes that were comfortably wide enough. I have really wide feet, despite my somewhat small shoe size-women’s 6.5. I’ve been wearing my old Nike running shoes (that I used to wear relatively comfortably) recently and quickly discovered I can’t wear them anymore. It’s so crazy how much feet change shape after switching. I’m so glad I switched to barefoot/zero drop/foot shaped shoes. My gait is getting better (complicated by joint/body “quirkiness” like so many humans have), and I’m SO much more stable on my feet! I lose my balance much less frequently. Tho, I would never get those individual-toe abominations (no offense, it’s all about utility anyway and I get that lol but the …toe-y ness is more than I personally could bear). I’m so happy foot shaped shoes are getting more popular though, because hopefully it will mean cuter styles! Many of the cute zero drop foot shaped shoes are SO expensive by comparison to typical shoes. I wish I could wear “conventional” shoes… but sadly I was not blessed with Barbie feet (even before my feet returned to their natural shape I never really fit in conventional women’s shoes).

    unfortunately, not everyone’s body is capable of supporting them while barefoot :/ i have flat feet and hyper flexibility as a result of osteogenesis imperfecta so after years of breaking my legs and feet I had to eventually get custom orthotic insoles to allow me to walk without crying in pain. I wear orthotic slippers around my house and use a shower chair for the shower (i hate the feeling of flip flops even if they have the arch support). i am grateful that my orthotics gave me the ability to walk for more than just a few minutes, up until i was 17 i used a wheelchair almost everytime i left my house. take care of your feet folks!! remember that pain is your body telling you that something is wrong so if your feet always hurt then something is up!

    I completely feel you. when I was in my 20s after over 15 years with auto immune disease, my feet began to hurt all the time while walking and there were not many shoes that made it any better. One morning woke up with searing pain in heel. Found I had a massive ulceration under a very thick callous on my heel. It was so bad the infection found it’s way into the bone. I had to have a surgical debridment, and have a catheter port in my shoulder, to deliver IV antibiotics around the clock for 12 weeks. Then I developed sensitives to the antibiotics after being on for a week or more, so they had to keep switching up the meds. I was so sick through that mess I ended up back in the hospital twice. After that the orthopedic doctor said you must use custom orthotic inserts and they sent me to a prosthetic maker where they made them for me. Changed my life. I could finally walk without pain. I only weighed about 80 lbs at the time, so it was really difficult.

    @@neothepenguin1257 for example in China it used to be a beauty standard to have very small feet. Parents would break their daughters toes and constrict their feet in the smallest shoes possible. And not just their toes, but many other bones in their feet were purposely broken as well, when they were still children. Over time the toes fold underneath and the foot takes on a triangular kind of shape. it looks real nasty, but small feet (..or rather squished ones) were desireable. I believe the last woman who had this done to her had already died of old age, but I may be wrong. but yes, even without breaking all the bones in your foot shoes will, especially since we wear them from baby age onwards, constrict your feet and shape them to what we today think of as normal

And I guess my mom never rly made me wear shoes that were too constricting So I can definitely see ppl who wear non-constrictive shoes actually retain their feet shape (Idk if socks would be a considered factor, but I didn't wear socks outside of school so..... like around 140/175 hrs per week, I would not be wearing socks (and I think I usually wore huge crocs during that time period too))

When standing in water the pressure on your joints is lower so you can still increase your cardio vascular health without straining your body too much. I also think not everyone should run because you only get one set of knees and they get injured easily if you are too heavy or run too much with a bad form. For general health usually the people who live healthily into old age are just people who walk alot and I dont feel its necessary to run and especially not for long distances. Many normal shoes prevent this too! Examples are AirForces, certain Jordans, even Nikes 270’s. Either wider shoes, or ones made of light mesh won’t cause much malformation in the toes. I mean I work nearly 12 hours a day (two jobs) and wear 270s everyday of the week for those 12 hours, and my feet look like how they should.

    Yes for sure. Im so exited to try out my new work boots bc they're up to my shin, sturdy and supportive as heck which will hopefully help my constantly swollen ankles with all the kneeling in weird places Im doing (Im an EMT btw). As far as the shape of your feet, shoes like Hokas are absolutely wonderful. They have a wide set toe space and allow you to spread. Barefoot shoes do provide strength and are wonderful for those whose life types allow them. But for those who often have pain with being barefoot, arch support is not a bad thing. I was thinking the same thing. I wear work boots almost every day for 8-12 hours and my toes splay perfectly fine. I think what we really have is a case of people that should have been buying wide shoes to begin with cramming their feet into narrow shoes. My husband and I both have problems with our feet and not being able to find proper shoes to fit. We both have wide feet and "wide" shoes just aren't wide enough. I think it's just that most of the people you know have naturally small or narrow feet. I have size 7 feet length wise, but size 9 in width, but even switching to a size 10 is still too narrow sometimes. I think companies are lying about their sizing to save on costs. I have suffered for over 30 yrs, horrible foot pain, dizziness, falls, equilibrium constantly off, toes misshapen, toes, under other ones, etc. I read you have to break in barefoot shoes, just a few hours at a time. The pain and mind boggling. I bought 5 different pairs of shoes this years, the same reaction. With inverted arches, my foot Dr said NEVER walk barefoot, but I finally thought, what can it hurt, I can send them back. That was two months ago. I got a kind with toes. I just got my second pair. Today I wanted to see if they have really done that great a job, so put one of the new sandals on. I just feel tipped over. HOW did I wear high heels for years. My feet are NOW able to point, before the ankle no longer bent. For me, I will never go back. I call them my hobbit shoes, and love them. I didn't even want to take them off the first few days, it was so shocking and wonderful to have room. It is more than room though, I have wide shoes. skinny feet with broken toes that are going to recover, if my ankles can change the toes will as well. I am a 23 year old female, born in raised in SC. I am half Polish half Native American. My family never enforced shoes unless it was church or somewhere that required them. Most of them went barefoot. Including my great grandfather who never wore shoes and was even buried barefoot 🦶 As I aged, they gave me the option to roam barefoot or put on shoes if I wanted to. Even at 23, I only wear shoes if I absolutely have to. My feet are wide and my balance is excellent. I don’t recommend it to everyone because everyone is different. However, it is the way of my ancestors and I chose to continue this way because it feels the most natural to me. I am happy and healthy and I feel I have a deep connection to the earth.
