Saying Drake is the most overrated Artist is the most NPC Fantano fan type take, Drake has 3 great Projects (Take Care, NWTS, IYRT) but has some duds, his influence is massive and Take Care was Genre AND Era Defining. It feels like "Drake bad" or "Drake Overrated" is just the safe option in these Fantano threads, Drake has made Trash, but his Classic Material was game changing, and he has a memorable place in Hip Hop

she's been in the field for 18 years!! It feels like people only know her now just because of the Eras tour and her recent music and all the buzz, so all her previous era defining work is just forgotten. Its hilarious because she's a staple in the industry. You don't get to put down an OG, come on now! There's an obvious reason for all her fame and HUGE fanbase. You can say you don't like her music or not a fan, but it's pure jealousy/hatred if you don't respect her for where she is today.

@@vintagesonofabOh 100% agree with this. Nirvana buried everyone into obscurity around them on accident by becoming ultra famous. I didn’t grow up in the 90’s (I was born ‘98) but when I used to think of grunge it was always Nirvana. When I got deeper into the scene when I was a teenager I realized Nirvana is good but they’re literally the most skin deep, at least since they’re so overplayed compared to their counterparts.

@@sp4c3ynirvana was kurt's vision & soul at the end of the day. dave & krist are talented people, but they both have come out and said that most of the nirvana work was kurt's ideas with them two just following his lead (and being happy to do so). many bands are like that. alice in chains, for example, is basically jerry cantrell's vision with the others following his lead (even though layne got most of the attention lol). not to underestimate the importance of the others' instrumentation at all- both sean kinney & dave grohl are two of my favorite drummers of all time- but the person who carries the band on their back absolutely deserves the most credit lol.

Drake is largely overrated by the average music listener imo, the type that only listens to the hits from playlists and stuff casually. Sometimes though I think people downplay his better projects from like 2011-2015 because they are genuinely quite good. Plus I enjoyed Her Loss overall. He's definitely talented and has the ability to make quality it's just that he doesn't try very hard and pumps out too much music imo. I feel like this is probably a cold take tho

I think the only like "objective" thing you can say to argue that they are not over rated is that before them the focus of pop rock was glam rock and hair metal and he/they brought something so poppy while being still so punk in ethos that the world kinda just listened and loved them with dropped jaws and then radio and mainstream music totally shifted to grunge and alternative.... (which meant at the time... all kinds of shit like beck, bjork, tori amos, REM and Tool all on the same radio airplay... it was fucking awesome despite that it made no sense haha) ... was it entirely Nirvana that was responsible for that? or Seatle bands in general and the grunge movement? probably not... The origins came from college radio and the popularity of bands like pixies, pavement, my bloody valentine.....but the world of rock had become bloated and egotistical and vapid (whereas Nirvana and most grunge bands were pretty liberal/left/focused less on material things and sex and partying for its own sake) and I think it was just time for a cultural shift.... and so I guess Nirvana gets the focus for all that because it was seriously a world phenomenon, the world before and after Nirvana. But of course its all taste I get there's many who arent moved by them and dont see it that way etc...

That metric don't mean anything, I've seen carti be called top 5 by a few members of the industry, doesn't mean he is (not that he bad though). That’s the only thing I can think of in-terms of relatability, but even then they aren’t that REMOTELY good at all to be shaking stadiums or breaking records. It's because she's like the poster child for a current very feminine pop musician, more relatable than most other artists, more talented (musically) than most other artists in the same genre, and she's a white female. There's nobody else around that could take that position, it's like the Powerpuff girls somebody put the exact right simple ingredients for a superstar for white girls and white gay guys. She is a pretty good artist talent-wise, maybe 8/10, but the rest of what she is, is what truly makes her as big as she is right now. The cult/obsessed aspect just comes from people being terminally online and following a hype, with a little bit of the impact her music has had on them mixed in there. About an 80/20 mix. I am no longer baffled by Taylor Swift :)

Drake, Lil Uzi Vert, Playboi Carti and 90% mainstream rap. Hip-Hop went too mainstream in the past 20 years which resulted in so many people who have 0 talent that became rappers. Barely that. They don't twns to rap too well. Rap is mainly about lyrics yet nowadays nobody cares about lyrics. Sometimes I wish we still had some gatekeeping to keeo the standards high. Instead we allowed everyone and their mama to become a shitty rapper. Now we got all kids mumbling, doing drugs and sayong Carti is the GOAT 😂😂😂😂 It shows me how little music you guys listen to.

The people saying nirvana is overrated have probably only listened to the radio hits, with bands like nirvana you have to dig into their discography to find the really good shit, don't get me wrong, the more popular tracks are still bangers, but the rarer songs and b-sides are really where you want to look, especially with punk, grunge, and other forms of alternative music, even kurt got tired of hearing smells like teen spirit though

Yeah consistent quality when they were around. I think that has to do with Kurt's passing. Like Tupac and Biggie, thier best work was released before death so we never saw the decline, we have some of their best shit. Shame Kurt started to dislike SLTS, that was a banger.

Nirvana was my favorite band by far when I was 16 and 17, I had all their records, knew plenty of their b sides and was obsessed with it. I would say the same you are saying now, I think Smells like teen spirit is not even in their top 15. I am twice that age and I think they are overrated.

When I was growing up and getting into soundgarden Alice in chains stone temple pilots etc I thought Nirvana was OK but mostly boring and overrated. Wasn't til my late 20s I really appreciated what a genius Cobain was, and grew to like how nasty and abrasive he could be instead of having the "this is just simple punk chords" mentality. Moral ots: sometimes you have to get over yourself.

by any means i still don't see the genius of nirvana, everything they did AIC did better, nirvana does sound more raw but is it trully a good thing? to me it just sounds more unpolished, the lyrics sound more tryhard and pretentious. At 20 and 40 i can still clearly understand and aknowledge the lyrics of any AIC song given how geniune they feel, nirvana sounds like teenage angst these days.

@@vintagesonofab AiC lyrics are more tangible and straightforward by comparison, Kurt could get really cryptic and symbolic which I think is harder to appreciate at first but I think it's aged brilliantly. I can't deny it comes off pretentious and I can understand how thatd be offputting but I think it's earned pretense. He backed it up.

At the end, people is going to find so meaning to it. I was the opposite, my favorite band was Nirvana but then I started appreciated other grunge bands, right now I prefer AiC.

@@vintagesonofab not Alice but everything Nirvana did to make them relevant, Pixies had already done (Alice was more metal so I don’t compare them to the other grunge acts aside from Soundgarden, myself). His influence on the band even came from Pixie songs to where up until after Nevermind, you could find a Pixie vibe on everything they did

I think j cole is a bit overrated his albums aren’t the most mind blowing pieces of work but the things that really help his case as a great artist are his features,production, and work with Dreamville and ROTD he’s done a bunch of great features including some that could be talked about as the best in the past decade and he does a lot with production on tracks and ROTD. Is he the goat as people say no. But is he a very good artist that could elevate if he builds off the “The Off-season” with upcoming projects, I believe so.

Ngl i still think nirvana is overrated, that’s not saying they’re bad but i think when comparing them to other grunge bands like soundgarden or Alice In Chains I think those bands come out on top. Both Layne and Chris have absurd chops, not to mention Alice In Chains’ intensity can’t really be beat for grunge. Especially on songs like Them Bones, God Smack and Man in the Box. I like nirvana especially for their chemistry, Dave grohl’s drumming and the fact they’re more approachable than the other grunge bands, but I still think soundgarden and AIC are the better bands

Honestly, I don't dislike Alice in Chains, But I do feel like "Man In The Box" is really overrated. The vocals and chorus are quite good, But it has genuinely one of the most annoying guitar riffs I've heard. I'd probably take any Nirvana song I know over that one.

Kurt Cobain was a terrible musician. He was an absolutely brilliant song writer. Just because Nirvana's songs weren't technical doesn't mean they were overrated. Also, their influence on an entire generation is immeasurable. Curt Cobain and Nirvana had a huge hand in killing the Sunset Strip hair metal scene.

Jack Harlow, Lil Baby, Yeat, all of opium. X, (tentacion not DMX), Dare I say Don Toliver. It’s not even that it’s not my style of music cause I really like Future. I just think all of them are glazed to no end when they really don’t have a lot to offer. Oh and also Will Wood. I just do NOT fw that guy.

I do think J. Cole is overrated. But I respect him. You can tell people like Kendrick, Big, and Nas has the "gift". Something raw and magnetic that couldn't be replicated. Cole is a hard work and master of the craft. He figure out the codes and became equipped. I wasn't always a fan, but I appreciate his work ethic.

I really tried to give his music a chance, I wanted to like it because he has so much music I was excited to get into it, but I just can’t get over his delivery, it’s so cringey and it ruins his songs. Nothing special from the production either, it’s not the worst music I’ve ever heard, it’s just mid and I wish I liked it more because he consistent puts out music unlike many other artists I like. I don’t understand why he’s ever in the goat conversation, and I’m not just saying that because I don’t personally like his music, it just makes no sense even if you are a huge drake fan you can’t deny that he has misses and utterly horrible songs, even entire projects that are unlistenable. Yeah, I never try to dislike an artist's work and I feel as though there are a lot of listeners (especially Fantano fans) out there who actively try to hate Drake in particular, but personally I've tried to listen to a lot of his albums and the only one I find myself clicking with is Nothing Was The Same, but only an "I mildly enjoy this" type of clicking. Speculation here, but I feel as though a lot of people who refer to Drake as their GOAT must have connected with his music when they played it during a point in their life which is now really nostalgic to them, for example during their last year of high school

Nirvana is definitely not overrated. They have a couple songs that have been played ad nauseam over the last 30 years. That doesn't make them any less important. Kurt and Nirvana were the rocket ship that propelled grunge into the mainstream, changing the landscape of music in the 90s.

I mean music is subjective and personally, I find them to be a bit overrated because I just prefer the other 3 bands in the big 4 of grunge. It's not that I dislike Nirvana, but I like Soundgarden, Alice in Chains, and Pearl Jam more. I think they are more polished musicians and write music that better suits my taste, even if I don't think they are as good at writing songs as Nirvana was. I would easily pick Chris Cornell or Layne Staley as a vocalist over Kurt Cobain any day of the week as well, even though I know that is not the majority opinion. I think they stack up in the emotion department and far exceed Cobain in range, clarity, and power.

nirvana’s reputation is immaculate and they never really deviated from the genre they committed to or threw a bone to listeners who wanted something more accessible than SLTS. the praise is 100% earned imo (esp *because* they never watered it down) but if it just doesn’t hit for someone, i understand how the height of the pedestal would be baffling.
