What are those popping sounds in my home? Wood friction vs soil movement.

Тәжірибелік нұсқаулар және стиль

What are those popping sounds in my home? Is the house settling? is the foundation shifting? During the course of your home's life, temperatures will cause shrinking and expanding which causes friction on the wood structure. In this video RK Bob Brown talks about those popping sounds, as well as signs to look for in case you are facing foundation problems from Soil Movement.

    We live in a 3 level condo on the 2nd floor flat. Only one wall in our living room in one spot creates a quiet popping/sliding sound occasionally. No physical drywall or floor damage of warping shows. This popping sound is local to a 2 foot spot at the floor/wall floor molding location that joins our neighbor's condo unit with the same living room layout mirrored. There is no plumbing in this section of wall. What is causing this and what can we do to stop the creaking? Thank you for doing this video.

    Good Day. By the description given its possible you have localized movement, just not a major one or one caused by soil. Its possible there has been in the past, or currently, heavy items that could have weakened the spot. If a heavy item wasn't present then the other issue, if not a foundation issue, would be to check for termites or other infestations. If this is a year round problem then I'd check for termites or other infestations that weakened the area. If it's only seasonal then it could be due to temperature changes with expanding lumber. Consult with a structural engineer if these are not the issue. Thank you for watching

    I hear the hardwood floor and joists underneath making popping or snapping noises every minute or so in the same area. If I go downstairs I stare at underside of the flloor boards against the floor joists I hear the same as if upstairs sitting by my chair.i wonder if the weight of a heavy chair can cause this. It's in the line of direction towards the popping I hear unless just contracting and expanding from indoor temp changes when furnace is on and off.

  • @ArizonaFoundationSolutions

    @ArizonaFoundationSolutions

    3 ай бұрын

    Heavy objects, especially a chair if constantly shifting with added body weight, can cause floor weakening over time. It's not necessarily a serious structural issue unless the boards begin to bow when weight is added. Reinforcing the underside where you chair currently is can help prevent further damage.

    We moved into a brand new home that was built earlier this year. We hear constant popping sound from the front door and from some parts of the hardwood floor during day time and night time. One if the screws from the upstairs ceiling vent has also fallen down. It looks like we should have the builder recheck things?

  • @ArizonaFoundationSolutions

    @ArizonaFoundationSolutions

    Fluctuation in temperature can play a factor in the noises you're hearing. Especially with the wonky weather as of late. One of the issues with brand new homes is they were built without proper preventative measures in place. The big one is rain gutters. If your home doesn't have rain gutters, get them installed sooner rather than later. Make sure you have at least a 5% grade that diverts water away from your foundation, and DO NOT plant anything up against your home. Check with your builder if installing rain gutters will void any warranties they have with your new home. If your foundation is facing issues, Do not let them "relevel" your home."

    I've lived in the same house for 29 years and all of a sudden we are getting really intense popping noises, especially at night but also during the day. Last year these only started around May once the weather got warmer and would increase at night as the temp cooled down, but now they're happening year round. This winter the popping noises would happen more frequently once the heat was turned on. If the first year it only happened during the spring but the second year it happen year-round, does this mean our problem is getting worse? The popping is causing me to lose sleep and I don't have the funds to hire an expert, is there anything else I can do??

    Hello and thank you for your question. It sounds as if you are dealing with some settlement issues. Before you call an expert, check around your home for signs of stress. Are your doors and windows difficult to open/close more than before? Are there cracks in the corners of said windows and doors? Any separation from the ceiling from the wall or floor from the wall? Any nail pops from the ceiling? If you see these signs you need to have a foundation repair expert inspect your home. If the popping sounds are happening, but you haven't seen any signs of stress, then it might be that joints have loosened and just need to be tightened. We have videos on signs of foundation problems here on our youtube page so look those up and see if they match. Thank you for reaching out.

    Hello Amy. With temperature changes the pops are normal. If, however, this goes on year round you might need to check if your neighbors are experiencing the same thing. If that's the case, you should speak to whoever conducts maintenance in your area. I'm not sure if you are part of an HOA or community maintenance agreement, but whatever the case start with your neighbors and go from there. Have a wonderful day.

    How old is the home and what are the soil conditions? Do you have rain gutters and proper drainage away from your home? If not then your popping sounds will continue until something gives. I would consider having a structural engineer or quality home Inspector check your home for any possible damage. If the home is good then get your foundation checked. If the foundation is good, then get rain gutters and drainage away from your home. The popping will continue for some time before it stops. I would refrain from any remodeling until it's all resolved.

    Hi Bob! It’s four a.m where I live and just heard another loud bang/popping sound. Scrolling thru all the comment I realise that everyone has a house built of wood. Where I come from they’re build with steel/concrete foundations, pillars of same material and also floors, no wood in my place. Yet I do get this loud noise. It used to be in one part of the house but now moved a bit to another. No plumbing nearby - bedrooms. Any idea?

  • @ArizonaFoundationSolutions

    @ArizonaFoundationSolutions

    Ай бұрын

    Even structures framed with steel are prone to soil heaving and, depending on your location, temperature changes. If you hear it frequently there's a possibility that moisture penetrated the steel and it's rusting. Weakened steel will shift with soil movements. Do you know if the steel framing is galvanized? There should be a local structural engineer or foundation repair expert who's familiar with your kind of builds and can assist you in getting that resolved.

    I hear 50 pops a day and year built 06. Walls bowing at footer slab foundation on both sides inwards. Cracks at each door and window and large voids now in garage, living room and bedrooms and driveway. I am renting. landlord called inspector but no engineer. 3 months ago they said it was just settling. It takes 20+ years for settling to finish? Why is it worse with each rain? Should I move out? There are more problems like no drainage away... no french drains. 2 ft thick header above garage door has verticle crack in it the entire way across and garage door bar holding the spring is bowing in the middle downwards about 3 inches. super scary since we are living with this for about 2 years and got much worse this year.

  • @ArizonaFoundationSolutions

    @ArizonaFoundationSolutions

    Any home without proper drainage will face serious foundation issues. The rain gets under the home and expands the soil underneath. If the walls are bowing the way you described, take pictures. Take as many pictures as you can and send them to your landlord. Keep a record of all communication. Foundation repair is one of the most overlooked repair that many people do. Denial is powerful until it's too late. Tell your landlord to install rain gutters, and grade the ground to be at least a 5% grade away from the house to prevent any further issues.
