My mother just underwent a reverse total shoulder replacement. To keep the incision from getting wet after surgery, I used "Glad Press N' Seal Wrap." I simply tore off a good size piece, and this literally stuck easily to the "mesh" shoulder sling she had purchased for showering, and also to her skin around her neck and chest area without lifting or falling off at all. The water just runs right off of it, and the adhesive is strong enough to hold with ease, but it doesn't stick to your skin at all for easy removal after the shower. Honestly, Glad should market this product to use specifically for the purpose of keeping wounds dry after surgery. It worked GREAT!

Great tips! I was lucky that my husband helped me shower. The pump shampoo is a must! You don’t even have to pick it up. It’s not shower related but you’ll need the tooth flossers so you can floss your teeth with 1 hand. Buy a back scratcher to scratch your arms. You’ll have little itches that you can’t reach with 1 hand. Like how do you scratch the shoulder on your good arm? Just trust me and get one. Lol Get some large button up shirts. You’ll not be able to pull a T-shirt over your head. Slip on shoes are a must. You won’t be able to tie your shoes. I could go one for days but hope these tips help.

Took first shower after surgery. My sister took an old camera bag with adjustable cross shoulder strap and wrapped it in plastic bag. Worked great as a stabilizer and support with strap being fully adjustable for easy on and off. So if you have any kind of cross shoulder tote, give that a try. Less slippery than a plastic ball when wet and no chance of slipping from under your arm. Worked great!!

Great suggestions! Wish I had gotten a chair. I do have a shower sling, but have weaned off of it. I was going through a lot after my surgery. After a shower, one week after surgery, I started feeling woozy. My BF helped me get my sling back on and I said I need to sit down now. Headed for a chair and that was the last thing I remember. My BF said I was out for several minutes with my eyes wide open and making some guttural breathing sounds. I came to and we went straight to the ER. It was an episode of near syncope. Please don’t shower alone without someone nearby to help in case of an emergency!

Thank you so much! Great info. My surgery is in 8 weeks. Watching and learning as much as I can, as I live alone. A gal on another video suggested a hairdryer stand, got it, and practicing to dry my hair one-handed. Works great. I'm also using it to help dry off after showering. Pumps for shampoos, conditioner, and soap on tub ledge/shelf can be used with non-surgical hand pressing down to pump (without the lifting of the bottle) I'm more than likely going to have to have the left shoulder done at some point so, I did go overboard a little and purchased an adjustable bed base from Sams Club. I feel I will get better "sleep" in my own bed/bedroom. I'm also renting an ice machine that also compresses and has a timer 30 on and 30 off cycles. As for toileting....after childbirth I was given a squirt bottle to clean, will try this again.

Post op 2 plus weeks ago. Appreciate your suggestions for showering but because my shower is a standard one, a shower chair is cumbersome & I don’t want to take a chance of falling. I do use a mesh sling. I’m using a ice machine qd which helps alleviate pain. Most difficult time is sleeping even using a wedge pillow. My recliner handle same as surgical side so unsafe to use at night. Thank you for your tips. 4 weeks to go.

Having rotator cuff surgery in 3.5 weeks. I have a 7x17mm complete tear, two smaller rips, and gonna have some clean up from an old non treated injury. I've been "practicing taking care of certain tasks" with my left hand. (I'm right handed). I also got my hair cut to my neckline, so washing and rinsing it with just one hand is easier. I use pump soap and shampoo/conditioner. I've even practiced with the mesh sling in the shower. I already have significant pain that I keep at bay with OTC meds and ice. I use my sling to remind me not to over use it and cause more damage. I've been mastering what I call "the T-Rex" method of only using my fingers, hand, wrist, and elbow. I do move my shoulder with the help of my other arm so as not to rely on my right shoulder. I don't want it to get too stiff before surgery. I'm glad that my pre-op appt. is 9 days before my surgery so I have time to be as prepared as I can be. I'm very active at 60, and not looking forward to the "down time", but having 6 horses, I know the importance of correct and complete recovery for the best outcome of surgery. Luckily I have family to take over barn duties for a while.

Had tear for 18 months - 2 injections, physio, training have helped slightly but still weakness and twinges in right arm. Overhead ok but not able to easily get coat on or move arm outward. After my first surgery, my husband applied shampoo to my dry hair before I went into the ‘scary’ shower. It cut down the time I was in the shower and I did not have to reach up to apply. We tried the kitchen sink sprayer for a hair wash three days post surgery but that was not really effective. It took me until I had the sling off for a couple of weeks before I felt safe in the shower. Four weeks post surgery now on the other shoulder and it is a piece of cake. I have also found a sponge on a stick is also really helpful. I am 6 months post surgery on the other shoulder and it is a really good way for me at least to give that shoulder a bit of a break because with the other one in a sling the first post surgical shoulder is having a lot asked of it. Plus you can do your feet and legs while standing more erect especially if you are on pain meds. Wish I had seen your videos before my first surgery!!! Also, I would remind people to make sure they remove fall risks in the bathroom. Throw rugs etc and make sure the floor is dry/stays dry so you don’t slip. Finally,

I see a lot of helpful information about showering, but I was wondering if there were tips to help with drying off after the shower? That was the hardest part for me to adapt to after I had my bicep repair surgery 10 years ago. Now I'm scheduled for my shoulder surgery in a couple weeks and I'm trying to remember things that gave me trouble during my last one.

I also have subscapularis infraspinatus is supraspinatus full thickness tears that have retracted almost 2 centimeters. I'm going to Mayo Clinic for mine dr. I am one year post surgery. I had torn cuff, torn upper bicep tendon, and bone spurs. I will say this was the WORST recovery of any surgery I have ever had. That said, I lived through it and I am a candy ass. Wear a button up shirt to surgery. Not a t-shirt. I had to have my t-shirt they put back on me, over the shoulder cut up the side, then I was stuck in that shirt for a month. After a while, you can take a button up shirt off. Depending on the arm, you will have to learn how to brush your teeth, wipe your butt, everything. But you will have the use of your surgery hand after the nerve block wears off. So you can still use your fingers to do stuff, that makes a world of difference. It was a LOOOONG time before I could wash my armpit, because you are not allowed to move the arm, but eventually, you can lean to the side and your arm will swing out. it was like a milestone. I got a scrubby on a stick for that. Physical therapy is a must, but it is like torture. The little tiny girl doing mine grabbed my arm and wrenched it back over my head like she didn't know I just had surgery. I felt like she was going to flip me over the table. I was crying and cursing like crazy. But in hindsight, I can see that she knew what she was doing and it was all good.

Dr. Mark morrey is doing my surgery... I have tore my bicep anteriorly from the bone I have a SLAP tear of my labrum and have completely tore my supraspinatus infraspinatus and subscapularis. The tendons have withdrawn or resected whatever it's called like almost to centimeters. I don't know how I'm going to do anything for the next four to five months with my legs being gone. This not going to be fun one at all. You should always check with your surgeon before doing anything. It is typically ok to allow your arm to come away from your body, not raising your arm. A small half inflated beach ball to help bring your arm away from your body a few inches is very different than raising your arm. Hope this makes sense.

In the meantime is it normal to be so beat up? It was my left shoulder, however my left breast, underarm, upper left side back of my neck is black and blue and very sore and tender. I can make out what looks like fat finger bruises on my RIGHT arm. I am also sore and feel a lump on my right side. There are 6 stitched holes around my shoulder whilst I was told there would only be 4. I was also told the operation would take about 30 to 45 mins from start to finish. I was under for 2 hours. Could anyone tell me is this the norm? Thank you.
