What are the side effects of a mastectomy? - with Dr. Tasha

A mastectomy is a surgical procedure that involves the removal of one or both breasts, typically as a treatment for breast cancer. While the physical aspects of mastectomy can be daunting, the journey encompasses far more than just the surgical intervention. It's a profound emotional and psychological experience for individuals undergoing it.
Beyond the physical healing, there's a journey of self-discovery, resilience, and empowerment. Mastectomy survivors often find themselves navigating a path of self-acceptance, learning to redefine beauty, femininity, and strength on their terms. Support networks, medical advancements, and personal determination play crucial roles in this journey, enabling individuals to embrace life with renewed courage and appreciation.
Each mastectomy story is unique, but they collectively reflect the human spirit's capacity to overcome adversity and find hope, beauty, and purpose beyond the scars.

Thank you Dr Tasha. I've had a mastectomy, have gone flat but wear a prosthesis. I was initially quite daunted by the idea of it all ... but can now say, 15 months on, that I had little pain and don't mind at all wearing the prosthesis. In fact, I feel more comfortable with it on than I do when I'm not wearing it. I would encourage everyone to take the process a step at a time and not to consider reconstruction as the only option.

Hi Chrissy. Thank you for sharing your story. I am glad to hear that going flat and wearing a prosthesis has worked for you. I agree, going flat is always an option and many feel that this is the right decision.

Hi Dr Tasha another great video I had a single mastectomy and remained flat and have never regretted it. No pain at all from the surgery even with the drain in. Only a little tightness as the scar healed. I used bio oil to help with that. I use the knitted knockers, a great charity where ladies knit these for ladies who have had a mastectomy.

Dr Tasha, I was interested in your description of a post -mastectomy haematoma, as that is what happened to me, requiring further surgery three days after my mastectomy in February. 300ml was removed, and the internal bruising extended from my chest to my thigh! However, although this was quite alarming at the time, I had no further problems and everything has healed very well. I agree with Chrissy, that an external prosthesis is perfectly acceptable and comfortable, for me, anyway.

Sorry to hear that you needed to go back and have the haematoma sorted. It can be quite alarming and scary, but I am glad it all went well 🙏🏽.

When I wear my swimming costume you can tell I've had a mastectomy. What NOBODY tells you is that tor larger cup sizes there are very few options available. Likewise the NHS do not offer a reduction for a larger cup size during mastectomy.

Yes it can be quite challenging for larger cup sizes. Sorry to hear that you are not able to get a reduction on the other side as no doubt that would help.

@@drtashag I CAN get a reduction but it shouldn't be necessary should it? It would mean more pain, more time off work, more disruption & stress & having a drain again. There are people who rely on me: I'm a part time carer. Is there no way you could advocate for people like me?
