What are the pros and cons of an epidural?

Getting an epidural is a personal choice you should make with education you receive from your doctor. Pain is subjective. Everyone experiences it differently. It's going to hurt more during labor than you might think, especially if it's your first baby. You don't know what to expect. Labor is usually the most significant pain a woman has felt. We ask patients to rate their pain from 0-10. First time moms may say their pain is a 10, even when they're 1 centimeter. They just don't know how bad it's going to get. Some women deliver without using any form of analgesia, whether that be IV pain medication or an epidural. They make it through. There are pros and cons to getting an epidural and it depends on the situation you want. A pro is controlled pain. A common misconception about epidurals is they relieve all sensation. A good epidural is one where you can feel pressure. You may know you're having a contraction and this helps with pushing. Women who don't want to feel anything are disappointed they still feel pressure when they're contracting. But it doesn't hurt; it takes away the pain. But epidurals aren't perfect. Sometimes you have to be re-dosed during labor and receive just a little bit more medication to keep you on top of the pain. We keep you on one side during labor; that's best for the baby. It doesn't have to do with an epidural. The side that's down will be more numb. The side that's up may hurt more, so we flip you over and give you more medication. One possible downside to having an epidural is you can't move. You can't walk around. You may have a little control over your legs to shift yourself in the bed, but you can't get up and walk. Some see that as a con. You need to have a catheter to drain your bladder but it goes and out when you're numb. There are also benefits to having an epidural. Many studies show that epidurals slow the progress of labor, which they can if you get it too soon. But, they can also speed up labor because if you can't control your pain and breathe properly-- in fact, if you don't breathe properly and take in enough oxygen and blow off the proper amount of carbon dioxide, it messes up the carbon dioxide and oxygen balance in your blood and that affects all of your organs including the uterus and circulation to your baby. It's very important to breathe properly. Make sure you're in control. If you're not in control, it's a good time to start thinking about an epidural because it can halt your progress. I've taken care of patients who have been 7 centimeters for 4 hours until they get an epidural and then 20 minutes later, they're 10 centimeters and ready to push and have their baby. There are instances where it can speed it up. Sometimes it slows it down if you get it too soon. Some doctors feel another benefit to an epidural is when it comes time to push the baby out, you're able to do controlled pushes instead of when you don't have an epidural, that instinct causes you to push as hard as you can with all your might and often times, that increases your chances of tearing. Recovery might be a little bit better after having an epidural. Now, as with any procedure, there's always risks. The biggest risks are infection and bleeding but many things are done to reduce this risk and we know that a possible side effect of an epidural is having your blood pressure drop. In efforts to decrease that effect, we give you a lot of fluid beforehand through your IV. This increases your blood pressure so when it drops from the effects of the epidural, it keeps it even. If it drops a little bit lower than we expect, there's easy ways to bring it back up and it's usually inconsequential to you and the baby. Possible risks of getting an epidural. One of the biggest ones is a spinal headache and this happens 1% of the time where afterwards, you could have one of the worst headaches you've ever had in your life. But, it's not permanent and there are easy fixes to it. There are also other risks that can be associated with the placement of it. The medication can go into a blood vessel that's in your back and the anesthesiologist is likely to ask you after they've finished with the procedure, do you have any ringing in your ears, funny tastes in your mouth, dizziness, those sorts of things. Those can be indications it's gone into a blood vessel instead of into the epidural space. The anesthesiologist would just try it again, place it in the proper place, and get you comfortable. In very rare circumstances, it can cause a little persistent numbness and tingling after the time period where your epidural should have worn off. This is about 1 in 10,000. It's rare. If you have more questions, ask your OB provider, the nurses, and anesthesiologist at the hospital. They'll answer your questions and assist you. If you have any other questions for me,ask them on our Facebook page at intermountainmoms and recommend us to your friends and family, too.

Before I went into labor, I didn't want an epidural and thought that people who got them just couldn't handle it. Karma got me on that one. When my husband was holding me up because I couldn't even stand during my contractions and the pain was literally making me vomit on the floor while he kept me from falling, I begged the nurse to get the epidural as quickly as possible. I was in labor for over 24 hours and the epidural allowed me to take a nap before the pushing started. I was so exhausted that I would not have been able to push if I hadn't gotten a break. I was able to be aware of what was going on because I was not distracted by the pain. I had ZERO side effects and I was able to eat and drink the whole time I was laying in bed. Even when I was pushing, the nurse was holding my cup for me to drink from. No one pressured me to get it. I told them before hand that I did not want one and when I asked for one, they made sure I really wanted it since I had told them differently before it all started. Everyone made me so scared to get one by only telling horror stories and they made me feel like I would be less of a mom if I got one. Shame on you for making people feel that way. Getting the epidural made my birth experience ideal and I would recommend them to anyone. It is YOUR baby, YOUR body, and YOUR choice. Don't let anyone let their opinion scare you or make you feel bad. Every birth is different too. Maybe my next one will be much shorter and I won't need one, but for this one I got it and I do not regret my decision at all. Maybe your birth was easy and if so, I am glad for you! Maybe yours was very hard and if so, I'm so sorry! Why can't we just let people make their own choices and leave them alone about it? Life is not a contest.

I made the mistake to not go to the hospital till the contractions were too strong. Thankfully, I didn't gave birth in the car lol. My labor was quick but way painful than it was with my first baby. I am both pro-epidural and pro-natural births and labor. I believe it's 100% up to each individual. I personally am hoping to have a natural labor because of an injury I sustained to my back. However I know this is not fully in my control, I may end up needing an epidural or even a c-section and I am happy with whatever is safest for my baby and myself. I know I need to have a flexible mindset, because in labor anything can happen. For me the hardest part has been wanting the support for a natural birth, and constantly encountering people who feel the need to tell me the worst, most horrifying scenario that they have ever heard of once they hear my decision to forego medicine with my birth. Even though, there are horror stories on both sides of the field! I just don't understand why people and other moms feel the need to try and frighten other moms in attempts to change their mind about how they plan to labor. At the end of the day we are all just hoping for happy, healthy babies and deliveries. I just try and respect everyone's decision, because it's just that, their choice to make. I do feel this video was presented in a pretty "epidural positive" attitude. I wish less Healthcare providers were so eager to discourage natural labor, especially since not everyone that has a natural labor chose to have one. personally, I know someone who was not allowed to have an epidural bc she has a spinal issue. and that too may be the boat I am in as well. I personally feel this video was pretty passively condescending to those planning on taking the natural route. Good luck to all the mommas with their babies and their labors, whatever route you take in L&D!

I had an epidural and it was amazing. Doesn’t hurt at all when you have intense pain from contractions. It only took like 15 minutes, and it was a huge relief when all was done I could rest until ready to push and I felt everything just numb to the pain.

I used to watch these videos prior to having an epidural. My first baby I didn't have a choice and labored too fast where I couldn't get anything for pain. My 2nd baby I told them to give me epidural first before pitocin (they wanted to do pitocin first) but I warned them I needed epidural first because my first baby came 2 hours after pitocin. My 2nd baby (had her December 2021) they listened and did epidural first then gave me half-doses of pitocin and I had her 3 hours after they broke my water. Original dosing is in increments of 4 (not sure really what measurement, that's all I was told) but she did it in 2 increments every 30 minutes or so. Epidural was so nice. I was so fearful of the pain again after my first. So if you've had natural already get the epidural. I felt nothing. Not even the needle go in for it. It started to wear off for me and I had to breathe through some contractions but I still didn't feel them and she bumped up my epidural some more. Again, epidural was so nice. Literally felt no pain. Even afterwards no pain. No problems at all from it. And my last baby weighed 7 pounds and she did great after too.

Laboured 29 hours (24 at home) before I finally asked for it. Another 6 hours later, sunny side up and shoulder dystocia. I would have had ptsd if I'd fully felt them manipulating him through my stomach, the episiotomy and forceps.

Kayla M. Hello Kayla! It's Nurse Dani. Needles definitely aren't fun for sure, but a few seconds of pinchy pain during an IV placement and the epidural can save you hours and hours of pain. There are two pharmacological forms of pain control available to women during labor: IV medication and an epidural. IV medication takes the edge off the pain, but doesn't take it away. It has side effects that include dizziness, fatigue, and really, it just makes you a little loopy. :) It is available for use until the woman is an hour or two away from delivery because it also makes the baby tired and we want the baby to come out screaming. Of course, in order to receive IV pain medication, you have to have an IV first, which means a poke. :) Your nurse will walk you through the IV and help you if you get dizzy or nauseated. As for the epidural, it's really not as bad as it might be made out to be and I'm speaking from personal experience, not just that of a nurse. If you've ever been to the dentist and had a cavity filled, it's very similar in the sense that you don't like the numbing shot--it hurts for a few seconds, but then after that, all you feel is weird pressure and don't like the idea of what they're doing in your mouth. When you get an epidural, the anesthesiologist or nurse anesthetist numbs the area in your back that they'll be working in and it feels like I'm taking my fingernails and pinching your lower back for a few seconds while the area is numbed. After that, it doesn't hurt--you feel pressure, but don't have pain. They walk you through everything and tell you what's normal to feel and when and are sensitive to the fact that you're scared. If you have more questions about it, don't hesitate to ask your OB provider and of course your Labor and Delivery nurse and the anesthesiologist or nurse anesthetist in the hospital. And if you have any other questions that I can help you with, please don't hesitate to ask them on our Facebook page at facebook.com/intermountainmoms!Sincerely,Nurse Dani

how long did the migraine last? Is it constant, or does it come and go? or did it last for a certain period of time? my sister is experiencing this right now. just had the blood patch yesterday. she still has the migraine.

They had to plunge my baby out. His head is bruised but he seems to be fine. Her asshole an vagina tore. Id reccomend it, she fared better with it but try to have a lower dose than my wife, she was at 15 whatever incriments they use.

A woman's experience in labor is not unlike the other 2 significant events in their lives, menstrual cycle and menopause. I have seen a handful of women who actually had NO pain all the way through delivery...on the other hand, I have seen women who had significant pain from the time they were 2cm dilated. The same is true with menses. Some women have terrible mood swings, copious bleeding and terrible cramps for most of their menses....while other women have very minimal bleeding, no mood swings and no cramping whatsoever. As regards menopause, some women have all the unsavory things associated with menopause from the time they are 30 until 55, while others hit 55 and have been completely free of all the nasties that menopause present. It isn't fair, for certain, but that's just the way it is. I would also add that although this young lady doesn't mention it, it is more than likely that a Certified Registered Nurse Anesthetist, a CRNA, will be doing your epidural. Another advantage to an epidural is that if an epidural is in place and functioning well, in the event that an emergency CS is needed, the epidural can be dosed with stronger medication and a general anesthetic can be avoided. An epidural CAN slow down labor but most who practice OB anesthesia for a while have learned pitfalls to avoid and it is my opinion that epidurals DEFINITELY speed up labor more often than slow labor down. Few things in life are as good as advertised but a well managed epidural can make a huge impact on your delivery experience. Good luck.

samantha ruiz I’m a labor and delivery nurse also and of course pts need to hold still for an epidural but they are not held down. They are sitting up in bed and encouraged to push the lumbar portion of their back out, rounded out like a “Halloween cat” is what we tell pts. Anesthesia knows what they are doing and they know pts can tend to jump a bit when the needle is going in but to say it is commonplace for people to become paralyzed after an epidural is reaching. I’ve never seen it in the years I’ve worked in L&D. And I know no anesthesiologists who have ever had that happen to any of their pts.

I feel like you are pro epidural. I think childbirth is a natural think that women have done since the beginning of time. surely trying to give birth naturally is best. the best birth position is not lying on your back as you are working against gravity. they say best birthing positions are an open position such as squatting and on all fours etc. where is the evidence to say that you are less likely to tear during an epidural vs a natural birth? I am under the impression that a natural delivery maybe in a birth pool can reduce and aid healing time as you are working with your baby and body to do what is natural.

Even if she is pro, it's not like she's biest. Like she said it's pros and cons are different for everyone and their circumstances. Natural birth is great and to me is admirable the amount of pain you suffer but some people just cannot handle that pain. Causing high anxiety, premature delivery Nausea. And that's only my personal experience with my first born. I'm definitely getting an epidural for my next delivery.

I'm hearing number from 70% right up to 90% when trying to find out how many women do tear in childbirth but it's safe to say that, when the obscene epidural rates in the US, the numbers should be lower than that. Most tears are minor, but of course she won't mention that. I tore, had to have three stitches which were mildly annoying. I'd rather tear again than increase my risk of a c-section, have a catheter put in, be unable to walk and have even just the slightest risk of meningitis or paralyses.

Natalie Green - exactly. Women who try to push the “natural birth” don’t really care about the pregnant person’s feelings on what’s happening to their body but idealize this mythical romanized past where they think things were better because it didn’t have the evil medical community or advancements in technology that have made gestation and birth safer for both the mother and baby. You want a home birth, that’s great, for you. You don’t want an epidural, that’s great, for you. Water birth or various positions? You do what makes you comfortable. Check out your hospital or birthing centres if that’s a thing where you live and see what your options are. But don’t try to guilt or shame women for wanting or needing medical intervention.

Epidurals are such an American thing. The moms who didn't get epidurals "made it through"??? I have done three non medicated births, one induced, one a huge baby, and one at Home, and even though you think you will die from the pain, you won't . Hospital staff really push epidurals, but they really just want the $, and studies have shown you are 60% more likely to get a c-section when you use pain medication during labor versus none. They also like epidurals because it gives them more control over the situation. Again, the pain alone has never killed a woman, and women survived hundreds of years without them.

Nurses do not get money for their patient's getting epidurals. At least not any Labor and Delivery Nurse's I know from different hospitals. Nurse's are the ones that are with the patient more than any other care provider and usually equally as much if not more than any family member/support person. A good nurse takes into consideration the whole situation including the patient's wants, anticipations, last resort go-tos as well as the status of the unborn child. Sometimes being a good nurse does include mentioning the epidural, cheering on the epidural, or cheering the patient to stay strong and go without the epidural. It all depends on the whole picture. Epidurals add inconvenience for the nurse just as much as convenience. At the end of the day..... whatever makes the patient feel better (not just physically but mentally) and keeps things as safe as possible for the mom and baby(s)... isn't that what matters? I have seen beautiful outcomes either way. I am Pro-Patient Informed-Decision (even if holding my bladder for an hour+ / bent over in a crazy position to keep the baby on the monitor while the mom is sitting up for epidural placement or if mom is screaming demands/ yelling at family/ making loud noises while going natural with no pain relief intervention) There are many sides to every situation. The best outcome for the mother and fetus is my fave, but ultimately it up to the mother---> and I will educate to my best ability and then put 100 % support into the mother for her decision.

Not really. When I lived in Germany in the mid 2000s, I knew more than my fair share of women who started out not wanting an epi and were talked into getting it. Women there, same as in the US, are basically told that your choice is epidural or take the pain. Nothing else is effective. MAYBE they'll discuss IV meds but make sure to tell you that it's not as "effective" as an epidural. But people aren't being told about hypnobirthing or what can be done to make labor easier to bear. That's stuff you have to look for yourself.

Maggie Ouma not true. That’s a myth. In fact, they allow the body to relax and therefore dilation to happen quicker.

this video wasn't honest about epidurals, I didn't hear the risk of backpains for life or the high chance of autism... not cool

I’m sorry but this channel is awful. Blatantly promoting fear of childbirth and the idea that you should just lay down and let medical staff push whatever they want on you so they can make your labor fit into their narrow definition of ideal. I’ve watched several videos and all are the same - making birth a medical event.

I don't think it is promoting fear of childbirth, at all. In fact, the channel seems to stress autonomy and making the mother as well informed as possible. The medical staff is there to help the mother in whatever decision she makes and to be there in case either the mother's or baby's life is in danger, to monitor the situation and to make sure both leave the hospital in the best circumstances. It is absolutely a "medical event".

I could not feel pressure or anything at all after I had my epidural. Plus the nurse pushed the button releasing more without asking. Saying you will need it . I don't even know how I managed to push at all.
