There's a difference between being straightforward and lacking a sense of tactfulness. One should be able to gauge the context of a situation and the sensitivity of the recipient, before sharing "direct" criticism. Otherwise these direct opinions can appear somewhat cruel.

Yes, I feel the straightforwardness is in opposition to American (mostly USA) fake-ness. I feel a German would refrain from complimenting your outfit if he did not think it was good, whereas an American (USA) would perhaps compliment you and then laugh and criticize you to others behind your back. Just my personal experience, I suppose.

Hmm, if the Dutch are direct it's OK, but if the Germans are direct it's not OK. Strainge! The Dutch are actually very proud of their directness and even say that they are even more so than the Germans

Germans are colder than us utalians but it's normal considering their climate. I was in Germany 2 months ago and everyone was kind to me and helped me in an extremely detailed way (even checking the bus timetables themselves on the internet) or they offered to help me get my luggage and take photos without me asking. If you are polite and don't claim everything you will hardly have any problems (obviously there are exceptions)

Funnily enough, a (German) friend of mine once complained that in her opinion Germans are too spontaneous, disorganised and not direct enough - whereas all the non-Germans among my friends said the exact opposite. When she dabbled with moving to Switzerland, I said that‘s probably the right choice, ´cause it´s the only country in the world that is even more obsessed with punctuality and organisation. It didn‘t happen in the end, and it wouldn‘t have worked, because in Switzerland people tend to be more reserved, which wouldn‘t have gone too well for her.

A large part of German humor is based on savvy wordplay. Therefore, a lot gets lost in translation. It is very sad that as a result we are being seen as humorless.

A lot of people come here for work and aren't young anymore, when you're working, you don't have much time and you have to plan. It's everywhere. Germans can still be spontaneous. But it's just adulting. When I go to my home country, I also can't meet everyone I know because people now have more responsibilities and if I want to meet, they need to know in advance

I think one can say that the culture from Scandinavia all the way down to Switzerland is quite similar. A lot of comments in the videos about Sweden and Germany also applie to Switzerland.

I believe that Germans are fun and have a sense of humor, the “problem” according to my theory about that stereotype is that humor is lost in translation, in addition to the fact that in general the gap of measuring what is normal and not normal is perspective of the USA, I have lived in Texas as a foreigner and now in Germany and I can say that they are very friendly in a different way than the American one and in my opinion, among countries like Holland, Sweden and Austria (what I know) without the most open

I expect that foreigners who go to Germany accept the rules there. I noticed that many foreigners get upset and break the rules and even provoke the police. There were even murders of Germans in extreme cases where the foreigner/immigrant from an extremely conservative culture did not want to accept the free German way of life and decided to kill Germans instead of leaving the country again. Strangely enough, foreigners in Japan, for example, always follow the rules, even if they seem very strange. There, in the onsens, you shower naked in one room, for example, but no one complains. Why is it a problem in Germany then?

"Be on time" is something that would like to be normal in my country , here if someone said "10 A.M" probably will be at "11 A.M" 😂

How telling that the Jordanese guy complains about rules... Lots of people from Muslim countries are constantly breaking our rules, expect understanding for their radical intolerance and totally disrespect German values and the society as a whole. If you don't like the way of life here you might want to reconsider living here 😑 Everyone who lives here peacefully, accepts the rules and values and contributes to society is welcome.

It's funny but I'm German-American and always laugh when I hear about German punctuality. Whether's it's for appointments, hanging out with friends or work. I also like things being planned out lol. My family emigrated to the United States during the late 1920's just after the Depression hit. I still have family in France (we are part French as well) and Germany today and will always be proud of my heritage. In the State of Pennsylvania where I live there are many MANY families with German background mostly what is called "Pennsylvania Dutch".

What a great culture.

I loved it. One because of my degree in German language and literature. Two I don't know.. it's fun to mess with them.

I think people are people regardless of their culture and heritage. However, what in one culture is deemed as good behavior might not be acceptable in another. So you have to check for a cultural fit. Some cultures are closer (like the Netherlands and especially the north-western part of Germany, however, even here you find important differences, for instances, concerning hierarchy). Here is my summary of some traits of German culture that are extreme compared to many other cultures: - Smalltalk: Only possible to friends or people you know quite well. Only exceptions: Complaints about the weather and the performance of the Deutsche Bahn - Sugarcoating: Not existing. If you don't like something you will tell it. Also, at work, university or school don't expect detailed praise if you have completed a task. The feedback will highlight on the things that could be better. If there are any, then the following scheme applies: (I find this good (=very high praise), not bad (= something is really good), could be worse (= this is good). Exceptions (lovers asking how the look; this is a trick questions, not to be answered truthfully unless you are in relationship with the persons for decades) - Attitude towards the future: Germans look (and talk) about things that could go wrong in the future and discuss this. Mitigation of this issues (some/many of which are only problems perceived by Germans) is done through risk avoidance, over engineering and Insurances. Only exception: People form the Rhineland, especially Cologne and especially during carnival. - Cheerfulness: Germans display not much positive emotions (smiling, excitement) past puberty to strangers. Behavior that might be normal or required in some cultures would only be tolerated coming from kids. If you like something it is expected that you keep it to yourself or that you make a short statement. If something is adequate don't expect any praise or complements. - Humour: Works best in German but is not used with strangers or acquaintances.We don't tell jokes or funny remarks to strangers. - Making friends: This needs to be organised. We make friends when we are young (school, university, vocational training, neighbors) and take care about these friends deeply. Later on, it becomes difficult and works only through common interests. Join a sports club, or Choir, a church (if your are into relegion) etc. Don't expect to make friends at work. Only exceptions: Other expats, immigrants. - Compliments: Germans are awkward when it comes to giving and receiving complements. And many other topics (flirting, dating, discussion of controversial topics, ..) on which you can find many online resources. People are people but different cultures play with different rules. Learn the rules and you will be fine. So if your culture is different in these regards (which is true for most countries of the world), then you will struggle at the beginning. My tip: join a registered association (Verein). There are over 600,000 of these in Germany.The German Football Association (DFB) alone has about 7 Million members, many of which train and play regularly football (soccer). There is a lot of socializing (chatting after training, having a beer together, BBQ in the summer, ...). If you have kids, take part in the activities of your school, pre-school and register them in a sports club. You will get in touch with other parents and develop trough shared activities friendships. Sorry to be so long (but this is also a German trait).

Germans smile at stragers I live in Bavaria and people smile to me a lot, about small talk people often do it depense on the place in the airplane I have few smalltalks but sometimes in trains or in bus station it is an exageration or at least in Bayern

Lived in Germany several times as a member of the military. Many stereotypes are similar to Americans; most Americans are very punctual and also like to plan a lot. While I was comfortable with the open nudity in German, I know many Americans are not. Americans associate nudity with sexuality. The only part of German culture that I didn't like was the directness and blunt honesty of Germans. It still comes across to me as being rude.

The thing I love about Germans, they care about animals and environment. I observe people with dogs on streets and they are often mixed race. In Korea is mostly pure race and status symbol, getting pet from shelter is not that common as here

my husband always that there is nothing worse than Germans being abroad (on holiday) but in their own country they are the nicest people imaginable.

and then you are coming to germany and wondering why not even one of these stereotypes is true...

Well Berlin is much more relaxed- people there do normally not care at all if you seperated your trash correctly. 😂 I had a bigger culture shock moving from Berlin to another city in Germany than moving abroad. But… the Berliner certainly is direct. ( Berliner Schnauze). :)

If you see it that way you haven’t understood. Not everything you consider rude is just direct in Germany. It may be rude , too. We draw the line somewhere else. So when you have been „direct“ with Germans, thinking there is no „rude“ in Germany you might have crossed the line. Or you haven’t crossed the line, they were totally ok with what you said but disagreed, told you so and now you can’t take the directness you have given.

I’m saying that with your own rudeness compass/ scale ingrained in your head and heart if you go to another country or interact with people from other countries on the internet you can act -Purposefully rude (or direct because you think that’s the same) and the other person doesn’t even realize that you intend to be rude. And if the other person acts like you did ( in a totally acceptable manner from her perspective) you might receive that as rude. - or you have really crossed the line to being rude in the other person’s eyes. Then she may be rude back to you. But I guess you don’t see the difference. Because you perceive your Gesprächspartner as rude, no matter what. Not quite a stereotype, but still annoying when people, especially from the USA, think there is german history only between 1939 - 1945. If I played the same cards then I could say american history is only about slavery and genocide. Our history is more than that! Ever heard of Martin Luther (not Martin Luther King)? You entered a Germany in a form and shape that is not really Germany anymore! So much things have gone the wrong way since 1990. If you want punctual trains you have to come to Switzerland! Trains are super clean and always on time but it comes with a prize..

I moved to East Germany and as a West German I have a culture shock. I have never experienced such unfriendly, direct and critical people as here. They care more about what others do wrong than sweeping up their own front door

I met a german guy in Paris a couple of days ago and he smiled all the time. He even wanted to hug me and kiss me (no, he wasn't drunk. He was a very gentle guy) and we ended up having a great night.

It should be hardly a wonder where "Karens" came from when we look at the origins of the vast majority of white Americans which is Germany. Another interesting information that might partly explain the strict, cold, organised Germans is that Germany (including Austria) had many spies dating back from the middle ages and German lords loved to flog their vassals if one piece of hair was not smooth over.

It's not just the Karens. I was surprised how many Americans are descendents of Germans. I researched many popular Americans (actors, singers,...) and quite a lot of them have german ancestors. It's even more obvious when you read their family names like: Mark Walberg (whale-mountain) Steven Spielberg (game-mountain)

It is the same with ,,stein,, meaning stone or ,,thal,, meaning valley. Many americans associate this names wrongly as jewish but they are not soly jewish . Many Jews that came from Germany or East Europe, bear these names but the conclusion that all are jewish when they habe ,,berg,, or ,,stein,, is wrong. Wahlberg for example is not jewish.

Unless something changes, Germany won’t be German in the future.
