What are the different types of hybrids? | Hybrid Vehicle FAQ #13
Автокөліктер мен көлік құралдары
Effectively there are four types of hybrids - Mild hybrid - these are the cheapest and least powerful. Strond or full hybrids - which have stronger electric motors and bigger batteries which allow the vehicle to be driven on electric power alone. Third there are plug in hybrid vehicles which are a halfway point between EVs and petrol vehicles. These can be plugged in to charge the batteries - which are much bigger so that you can drive in EV only mode. Then there are the range extender vehicles. These are driven entirely on electric power - but use a small petrol engine as a electricity generator to charge their batteries.

I think plug in hybrid makes more sense. It can use EV mode for short commutes and ICE engine for long hauls.
Range Extender actually seems an interesting technology.

Excellent and useful, I didn't know about range extender at all 👍 How about a "type of vehicles" right from the ICE to EVs including types of EV ?

Great suggestion!
Electric motors have lot of torque even low hp once. IC engines loose most of their milage during acceleration, when they are cruising, they are very efficient. A decent sized battery with electric motors which will deliver torque to wheels when accelerating or on climbs is a good system. But these systems given in cars in India have too small battery, doesn't help much and only works on low speeds. If they provide a bit bigger battry and program it to deliver torque when accelerating even on high speed in scenarios like overtaking. Ic engines efficiency will further increase by a lot.
Please fix your mic issues , both yours and shumi's voice feels like someone is trying to whisper in my ears but fails and nearby people can hear it somewhat .

Nissan e power looks interesting. I do have general doubt. How about the longevity of batteries in hybrid system? Will it last for a decade?
Isn't suzuki coming with the 4th set up in fronx somewhere around 2026 ?
Love the idea of phev, i believe its the bridge towards no emission motoring, the latter is something we're not ready for currently. As per a study, 88% of car kms are covered in the city. Why wouldnt it make sense to incentivize this fraction rather than 100% electric vehicles for which we dont have the power generation & charging infra ? A 40 KWh battery now is much better used in 5-8 cars by limiting their emissions for shorter distances. Shame on the Indian brands that fought against common sense and the sarkar that agreed with them 🤬
@vivekaaraga

Good point. But the argument against this is that hybrids are heavier than ICE and EVs. So there are not as efficient.

Plug in hybrid is best. Electric in City, ICE on highways. Win win
Excellent!
Mild hybrids only assist with the acceleration, yes. But in doing do they also handle most part of the stalling speed. In other words it has the potential to eliminate the torque converter required to pair an ICE to a CVT. I think Suzuki's new Z12 powerplant is a mild-hybrid Direct Drive just like its predecessor R06a. Hyundai too has a 1000cc, 3 pot mild hybrid CVT drivetrain which could be Direct Drive. Ofcourse they would need bigger batteries. As for ROI of hybrid premium, I wouldn't worry too much. No one who owned diesel cars ever bothered. About EV premium recovery, less the spoken, the better 😅.
The last one is like the Diesal train engines
mild, strong and plug-in HEVs are in parellel combination, and extended range will be the series combination, right?
Can you please make a video on the Maruti Suzuki Invicto?
I have multiple questions? The idea of buying hybrid is because battery are Low mileage, expensive and heavy vs fuel High millage, cheap and light The best Diesel or gas engine have 20%-30% efficiency vs the electric motor have 80%-90% efficiency Engine just charging small battery for electric motor better I think because of efficiency
@HariKrishnan-pe3ft

Because of efficiency as well as quite ride. But we don't know about real world performance since we don't have any series hybrids in India.

Wow! New knowledge. Didn't know about range extenders. Thanks! Tata should come up with a range extender for their Nexon. It will help bridge the charging port low-availability while on roadtrips.

Would a FCEV be considered hybrid as well?
Range extender could have been honda city for Indian market.
In the end, my early century V6 mounted in a supremely built 4x4 will produce less carbon burning gas through its lifespan, than the carbon production that occurred in the manufacture of those hybrids. I might have the wrong audience here 😅
Looks like Maruti is going with the 4th type now
You can probably include Nissan's E-power technology.

Just get a regular ICE instead of smart or mild hybrid. I see no difference in performance. Mileage? Maybe a couple of kilometres extra, but nothing more than that. Also issues with hybrids can burn holes into your pockets.
How is the EV only a hybrid? Doesn't hybrid mean it has to have at least two types of drives? So an EV is just electric. It's not a hybrid. And the first is micro hybrid as per the manufacturer and not mild hybrid. It doesn't need a new name. There is no need to reinvent the wheel just to stand out from others. You need to do better than this.
@motorinc
11 ай бұрын
A micro hybrid does only start-stop... doesn't intervene in acceleration. A mild hybrid does micro-hybrid plus it helps with acceleration A strong hybrid isn't designed to charge except with the engine (so not an EV in that sense, although it can drive limited distances on electric power alone.) A plug-in hybrid is a strong hybrid but with the ability to be plugged in for charging (usually quite a bit more expensive than strong hybrids) A range extender uses only the battery to drive the wheels, and has a small ICE engine to top up the battery on the move. Perhaps you'd like to listen again? No wheels were reinvented but perhaps you didn't understand?
And how is the second not a plug in as it's EV only and why call the 3rd type plug in hybrid. Man, this is just pure BS.
@motorinc
11 ай бұрын
The second isn't a plug-in because strong hybrids don't plug in for charging, they only charge using the engine in the car. The third is called the plug in, because you can. Plug in hybrid electric vehicles (PHEVs) are quite a bit more expensive because they typically have larger batteries and effectively have two entire full functionality powertrains, one ICE and one electric
City ehev belongs to last one?
