    This is kind of my fear, tbh. I remember back in February when I first started learning about this. We went for a walk and saw a family with small children. One child was walking way ahead of them. My first thought was, “Hmm, I wonder what personality would be the type to walk ahead…or trail behind…the rest of a group?🤔” Then I immediately shut down the thought because I didn’t want to be someone who was constantly analysing people in casual settings. I haven’t gotten too deeply entrenched in MBTI since then because of this, even though I think it’s so interesting.

I’m an ENFP, if that helps in any way, but: I find myself trying to type my cat’s personality, celebs or actual characters in stories, my colleagues, boss, etc. it’s more an experiment for myself if I think I’ve figured them out correctly and use that to influence how I interact with them (not celebs and characters though, but people/beings in my actual life), and then if they seem to positively respond to my interaction with them, it gives me more evidence that I may be onto something with my MBTI hypothesis for them. It’s both just fun to type but also somewhat helps in my communication with others.

    Yep, that was my reaction when I saw this video hahah :D ! I feel like lots of people since they're more used to the little sketches etc. aren't really familiar with cognitive functions, so they're typing themselves either by stereotypes / the 16 personnalities test directly, which is.. Ehhhhh because of the typing by letters that is an extremely simplied version of the cognitive functions, plus the intuitive bias that 16 personnalities have :). Anyway, I'm glad that Frank can educate more people on them :D

    Some more help for newbies; Here is the core question each function asks (IMHO): Se - What is happening right now in this situation? Si - What happened before in similar situations and does it apply here? Ne - What new ideas can I derive from the data? Ni - How can I link all the data together into a unified system of ideas? Te - What makes logical sense for the group in terms of efficiency and getting things done? Ti - What makes logical sense in my own mind regardless of others' opinions? Fe - What do others in my group value and how do I find harmony with them? Fi - What do I value personally and how do I act with authenticity? Also, anyone who wants to go further down the rabbit hole might want to look into shadow functions, which is basically the mirror opposite of your function stack and can emerge during periods of high stress. (For example, an INFJ's shadow stack is Ne-Fi-Te-Si.)

    Talking about the cognitive functions and how that applies to someone personally as well as how far they are in the direction towards a part of a personality like how S or T someone is will give answers that are more exact to how the person actually behaves while the simple idea that an ENTJ has J and ENTP doesn't so ENTJ must be more organized I find it funny how no one cares about how the type actually works and how it can vary before using it

    the F vs T functions are the judging functions. you make decisions with them. your F vs T are always the opposite of each other. Fi - personal values (priortizing your own likes, taste, morals, hobbies, etc. "following your heart") Te - tribe reasoning (prioritizing other people's advice that's backed up with their logic, facts, data. trusting the consensus. wants people to work together effectively) Ti - personal reasoning (prioritizing what makes sense to you with your own findings, skeptical of outside reasoning and often asking questions) Fe - tribe values (prioritizing what other people like and value. trusts common ethics. seeks harmony) -------------- N vs S are percieving functions. they're about how you process your surroundings which you then go on to use to make decisions. N and S also gotta be opposites. Ne - gathering the abstract (consuming ideas, patterns, and possibilities in a scattered frenzied way. and it spits out these things chaotically) Si - organizing the concrete (taking the time to break down information and past experiences in a linear fashion. uses familiarity to try to control the environment) Se - gathering the concrete (consuming facts and surroundings, truly going with the sensory flow living in the moment. in a frenzied chaotic way as well) Ni - organizing the abstract (taking the time to process the patterns and zeroe in on few ideas to reach a point in a linear way. breaks down concepts. uses predictability to try to take control) ---------------------------------‐-------------------------- regarding the xxxP and xxxJ stuff. an easier way to memorize function stacks based off of those letters is this: P types prefer introverted judging (Fi/Ti) and extroverted percieving (Ne/Se) J types prefer extroverted judging (Fe/Te) and introverted percieving (Ni/Si) Ni/Si are about control and Ne/Se are about chaos, that's the typical J vs P. although this mostly applies to IxxJs vs ExxPs. IxxPs and ExxJs are way more chill when it comes to that balance enough about letters. your inner and outer cognitive functions are your dominant and your inferior, and they're opposites. their imbalance is basically your life struggle. like doing Ne all the time without effort, but you hate Si-ing. yet the less you do your inferior function, the worse you as a person function and the more unhealthy you get your middle functions are also opposite but work together a lot better. like using your reasoning (Ti) to make comfort people (Fe) is a common thing i see. if your first function is introverted, your second needs to be extroverted. if you have Ne first you cant have Te second. it can only be 3rd.

    It's rare for people to have extraverted perceiving and extraverted judging function as dominant and auxiliary function. That doesn't mean people aren't more likely to exhibit their two extraverted functions to others.

  • @fromant65
    @fromant652 жыл бұрын

    About the stack: The first letter tells you if your dominant function is Extroverted (e) or Introverted (i) The fourth letter tells you what's your Extroverted function, either Judging (J) or Perceiving (P) For example, INFJ: The first function is introverted, and the extroverted function is Feeling (because of the J), so it has Fe somewhere So its stack must be Ni (first is introverted, can't be Fe) Fe (Preferred judging function) Ti (Opposite from Fe) Se (Opposite from Ni) You can really type yourself accurately with this info. For example, I'm an INFJ, and even I'm not sure if I prefer Ni or Fe for my dominant function, I'm sure my inferior function is Se because I struggle so much with the sensible world, but not that much with making rational decisions (Ti) Anyway, the rest of the stacks: INTJ: Ni Te Fi Se ENFJ: Fe Ni Se Ti ENTJ: Te Ni Se Fi INFP: Fi Ne Si Te ENFP: Ne Fi Te Si INTP: Ti Ne Si Fe ENTP: Ne Ti Fe Si ISFJ: Si Fe Ti Ne ISTJ: Si Te Fi Ne ESFJ: Fe Si Ne Ti ESTJ: Te Si Ne Fi ISFP: Fi Se Ni Te ISTP: Ti Se Ni Fe ESFP: Se Fi Te Ni ESTP: Se Ti Fe Ni

    Ok, I'll summarize this in the simplest manner possible. Ti = Likes to make their own thinking, likes to ask questions, highly logical, detail focused, likes to connect small details in order to reach to a final conclusion. Te= Open to the ideas of others if backed up by good arguments, productive, willed to trade details for time savings. Highly driven by facts and common sense, likes helping others, prefers to be concrete and upfront. Fi= inward focused, driven by values, highly empathetic in weird ways, doesn't like opening up unless it's with a highly trusted individual, individualistic, are good at spotting bad people. Fe= outward focused, likes helping people a lot, likes showing emotion, usually sociable, very supportive. Ni= Future focused, abstract, very deep, high pattern recognition skills, doesn't enjoy working with too many ideas all at once, gets overwhelmed if they need to make too many fast decisions Ne= Very imaginative, good at seeing possibilities, spontaneous, likes to juggle between multiple ideas or concepts, enjoy exploration. Si= Very organized, down to earth, conservative in their thinking, enjoys facts and common sense, very balanced, doesn't like too many changes, especially if they seem weird to them, past focused. Se= Present focused, spontaneous, very good at making fast decisions, enjoys being active in the sensory world, energetic, doesn't like delaying gratification. Perceiving functions (XXXP) = Intuition, sensing Judging functions (XXXJ) = Thinking, feeling The first function can be determined by the first and last letter of a personality, if the personality has an "E" as their first letter then their first function will be extroverted, if the first letter is "I" then the first function will be introverted. If an extrovert has a "J" as their last letter then their first function will be a judging function (Thinking/feeling). If an extrovert has a "P" as their last letter then their first function will be a perceiving one (Intuition/sensing). Keep in mind that for introverts is the other way around. J= Intuition/sensing P= Thinking/feeling. The first function of a personality will always have it's opposite as the last function. Ni will have Se Te will have Fi Fe will have Ti An ENTJ will have extroverted thinking as their first function because they are an extrovert, they have J as their last letter and they are a thinker. Their last function will be introverted feeling since that's the opposite of their first function. The second function can be determined by looking at the first function. If the first function is a judging function then second one will be a perceiving one and vice versa. If the first function is introverted then the second one is extroverted and vice versa. The third function will always be the opposite of the second function. ENTJ has an extroverted judging function (EXXJ) as their first function which means that the second one will be an introverted perceiving one. ENTJ is an intuitive which means that the second function will be introverted intuition. The third function is always the opposite of the second one which means that an ENTJ will have extroverted sensing as their third function. In conclusion, an ENTJ has extroverted thinking as ther first function (they're extroverted and also a judging type) The last function is introverted feeling because that's the opposite of the first. The second function is introverted intuition (the first function is an extroverted judging one so the second function is an introverted perceiving one. They are also an intuitive since they have "N"). The third function is always the opposite of the second function, that means that the third function is extroverted sensing. If you have any questions then feel free! I spent a whole hour writing this, I hope it turns out to be worth it.

    Frank, thank you so much for this. I know several people have commented about wanting this video, and I am so glad you did it. IMO, it’s one of the most important MBTI videos you’ve made. TBH, it’s still confusing to me. I even slowed down the video to listen more carefully. For some reason, it’s like you’re speaking “math” to me.☺️ Once that happens, I have to fight to concentrate. The same thing happened while reading some sections of “Gifts Differing”. I find myself re-reading the same paragraph repeatedly without it sinking in. However, your adding a white board to your video has helped tremendously. I now plan on getting a poster board and creating a diagram of all of this with a legend so I can quickly look at it when I get confused. I hesitate to mention this, because I feel stupid, but another thing that trips me up is the use of the words “value” and “responsibility”. For instance, someone will say, “This is your most dominate function; the one you feel responsible for…”. Responsible as in I feel responsible for developing or nurturing it? as in I use it automatically? as in I feel responsible to be the one in a group to use this function? I need a synonym if anyone can help me better understand how these words are used in this context.☺️ Again, thank you for taking the time to record this video.

  • @FrankJames

    @FrankJames

    2 жыл бұрын

    Saying someone is "responsible" for a function is more accurate than saying, for example, that they "want to" or "like to" use it. For example, an ISFJ might tell you that they don't like organizing, they don't want to do it, but they will spend their whole afternoon arranging their kitchen drawers without freaking out about it because they feel responsible for that.

    @@FrankJames Might be a bit too much to ask, but could it be possible to give more examples of this responsibility in the other cognitive functions? 🤔 That example right there was SO helpful for me, thank you so much. 🙏 + What I have a lot of trouble understanding is how a cognitive function manifests in its position. For example, how does Ti manifest in the dom, 2nd, 3rd, and inf function? I tried to look for it but the explanations are SO ambiguous and not helpful at all. Especially the perceiving functions, they are much harder to understand (at least for me)... For example: "Auxiliary Introverted Intuition As an auxiliary function, Ni manifests as an understanding of how one ought to go about accomplishing his or her goals, based on a keen intuitive perception of how various courses of action are likely to unfold. The auxiliary-Ni monologue: “How can I use my intuitive knowledge about how things are connected in order to achieve what I want?”" (source: thoughtcatalog .com) That's helpful for someone who already has it (kinda), but how can an outsider figure that out? I know I gave the worst example ever with Ni, but I think you can understand what I mean 😅 You already have a video about how to recognize them and that's really helpful, but one about that would also be even more helpful for someone who is trying to understand mbti as a whole, in my opinion. Thank you so much for reading this 🙏🙏🙏🙏

When I really dug into the differences was when I first discovered that it's NOT a tiny "one-letter difference" where INTJ is just the slightly more organized version of INTP. I discovered function stacks, and that the two types have _completely different stacks_ with _completely different functions!!!_ DUDE. When all was said and done and I'd studied the function stacks, I found I was definitely NiTeFiSe. Also, you know it's a lot to take in when the "brainiac type" (me) slows the video down from 2x speed to regular speed because I can't memorize that much at once 😂

I-Type Dom Aux │ Dom Aux E-Type INFP- Fi Ne │ Ne Fi -ENFP ISFP- Fi Se │ Se Fi -ESFP INTP- Ti Ne │ Ne Ti -ENTP ISTP- Ti Se │ Se Ti -ESTP INFJ- Ni Fe │ Fe Ni -ENFJ INTJ- Ni Te │ Te Ni -ENTJ ISTJ- Si Te │ Te Si -ESTJ ISFJ- Si Fe │ Fe Si -ESFJ For each type: Tertiary (3rd) function is the polarity function of its auxiliary Inferior (4th) function is the polarity function of its dominant Non-preferred functions (either repressed or suppressed in the unconscious) are stimulated behavioral responses such as defense mechanism that swerve off from an aversion stimuli. I suggest that you'd also tackle cognitive functions citing other proponents on personality theories. I’m easily overstimulated. I love static sorts of stimuli… so I can sip it in rather than being immersed… quiet hikes in pretty places, love running in the forest preserve letting my mind go all over while I slowly take in small bits of sensory info, but put me in a loud crowded place or confront me with flashing lights or even uncomfortable clothes and I am miserable. Im also lousy at staying present. My mind tends to go elsewhere unless I really focus on staying present and that can almost feel painful to do. I found an article about it and it basically described so much of what I struggle with in life. I figure(d) I have sensory integration disorder for years. Feels better to think of it as the price I pay for my insight 😀

    Been trying to study the cognitive functions for over a year. I’ve been doing a lot of research but a lot of it has always been muddled, this *CLEARS UP A LOT*. Like seriously. Very helpful frank!! I’m impressed how cleanly you explain smth as complicated as this

    This is BY FAR the most informative video I've ever seen on the personalities. I literally got my notepad out. Amazing, Frank. Since I'm not quite sure of my personality type (I took it many many years ago, and am not sure it still applies), I used this to try to retroactively figure out my type. Not completely successful but I learned so much anyway.

    I want to add that the tertiary function can be preferred over the aux function since it’s more of a comfort function that can keep you in (unhealthy) loops, whereas the aux function serves more as an advisory role. That’s why the tertiary function is also called the “child function”, since we have a naive or childish view of it, making it tempting to use as our support function. Meanwhile the aux function is often known as the “parent function” since it’s the one that should be advising your dominant. But it’s like eating your vegetables. You don’t want to do it but it’s good for you to do so. As an INTP, I use my Si tertiary all the time since I find it comfortable to use. But Ne (which is the parent function) actively helps me grow and mature. The idea that we use our tertiary when we become adults refers to our HEALTHY use of that function. When immature, we still use it but it’s not being used properly

    Thanks for this video🙏🏾. I watched it slowly and I need to watch it again. Knowing about my 4th function (Te) answers sooooo many questions. Can’t wait to learn more.

    I definitely started by just googling INFP cognitive functions and reading up on what sources have to say. XD My experience with the cognitive functions is definitely that I try my hardest to base my decisions on my internalized values--it's very important for me to act morally, so Fi makes sense to me. I also have always been good at making connections and wrapping my head around abstract ideas (Ne). I mostly see Si when I'm remembering details in emotional contexts--if I'm telling a story, I'll occasionally cycle back in time to highlight a detail I neglected to mention in the first go-around, even if it isn't critical to the point of the story. And nowhere is my dislike of Te more obvious than when at the grocery store trying to decide between similar products. Especially if I don't have much energy for decision making, I can tend to be like "oh I don't know which of these choices will make me happiest or align most closely with what's important right now, oh no oh no" 😅

I'm gotta be honest, I'm glad you brought up the cognitive functions explanations back (even if I'm already familiar with them, but I'm glad that more people can learn about them since I think that typing by stereotypes can lead to lots of mistypes and everything, so that's great!) ! ;D
