Thanks for this explanation vid! I bought my HERO5 two months ago and I never realized I could change all those ProTune settings on the GoPro itself.. I still thought this had to be done in some GoPro software. Stupid me :) Oh and I am using Sony Vegas to edit my footage, love this piece of software! :D I used to work a lot with Premiere but I always found it too complicated to work with. Now, comparing Vegas to Premiere, I do realize they are both as powerful but I prefer to work with Vegas.

Dude, I am 58 and I wish my kids were still near me because any piece of tech stuff I used to just give it to them and they would hand it back in 10 min. and tell me more than i could drink in at one time. But....they are all grown and gone so I am glad your here! :) I am just beginning. I work in the fitness industry as Club Ambassador and that just means I connect with clients and keep them involved and appreciated and have fun. I started a "book of heroes" (name of brand is Heroes Fitness) ... it's just the stories of whoever will participate. But we found people would rather do a 30 sec clip than to sit down and type out a few paragraphs. I just need to learn how to use this thing and the only thing I can see is, turn it on, play with it and keep watching your videos lol....I don't see a place for an external mic but I am also needing the most simple editor. I have the gopro program on my ios phone so unless you say otherwise...I think I will try it first since I am just beginning anyway. Wish me luck! lol Any advise is so welcome!!!!

Yup, that's aperture/depth of field etc.. get a camera with interchangeable lenses, is the most basic way to answer that. In basic terms, there's a lower number on lenses such as 1.4, 2.8 or higher at 16.. it's sometimes marked with a letter f, like f1.4 etc.. the lower the number, the more blur. Basically that number tells you the amount of length that is in focus.. say your focus is tight at 2 feet in front of you, the f number is at 2 feet and up to the f number is how far past 2 ft it is still in focus. Please note that I am using simplified examples and not the actual measurements. A 28mm f1.4 lens is not measured in feet. Hope this helps

Thanks for the video. I just got into the video editing realm. I have several different gun channels on here and I usually just let my knowledge and skill draw the intrest but I have recently decided to invest some money and time into learning how to edit to take my channel to that next level. I'm just editing in iMovie, using the GoPro to get first hand shooting footage and voicing over, also adding in segments that were filmed on a different camera until I get my mic for the GoPro.

A co-worker found a GoPro Karma in his neighbor's tree. The neighbor let him have it and he brought it to work and I eventually bought the drone AND the Hero 5 that was still in it. I don't have a controller for the drone so I am focusing on the camera itself for now. It works great so far. I haven't put it to a real outdoor test though. I have been using Cyberlink Powerdirector for all my previous videos regardless of what camera. I am still learning about resolution and your explanation was very helpful. I hope Cyberlink will be good with this because I really like it. Thanks

I’m all a bit new to GoPro & only done a few short family holiday videos. But I really want to get back into capturing more footage. I’ve watched a ton of videos today on tips of shooting and settings, but found this video super useful on the settings side to have my hero5 on. It would be great to see what you would edit on or would suggest to invest in for the occasional GoPro user, some basic skills or guide to what software to use & any tutorials would be so helpful. It’s one thing filming, but another editing, which takes forever. I’ve only used windows movie maker, which done a nice and simple job, but seemed pretty basic, once I got the hang of it. But thanks for the tips on this video, really knowledgable and explained so well.

Jamie cheers Jamie. For PC users look into Sony Vegas for editing. Or Sony movie studio. Its been a long time since I’ve edited on a PC. I’ve been using adobe creative cloud for a long time but it’s a pretty steep Pay Wall for a casual user. Maybe adobe premiere elements? Again really unsure cost with all of these.

Yeah I’ll look into those options then, thanks a lot. I did start using the GoPro editor, but found any footage I have from my iPhone (videos) I couldn’t seem to use in addition to my hero5 footage, so assumed GoPro was there own footage only. So why I moved onto Windows movie maker, which I could use all on, but like I say, was very basic. This is definitely one area I want to improve, especially the filming on GoPro. I guess one thing I have also struggled with is using at night and low light, but I believe this is GoPros down side generally. Appreciate the reply. Thanks

I have the Hero 4 Silver & the Hero 5 Black! Editing with Premiere Pro. The Auto White Balance is really accurate and versatile nowadays! 4.7 with 60fps works well as an acquisition setup! The Hero 4 silver has that connector where you just plug a little dongle in and I can use a hardwired shotgun, lavalier or wireless mic with no problem! The Hero 5 Black there's a modification once you put it in Stereo that you can surgically drill three holes in the case which will let the microphones here much better! So switching back and forth berween both cams gives me great interesting and closely matched Audio & Video!

Hi Ryan, great video. I have tried out your settings and it has transformed the look of my own recordings. My question to you, what would you change and to what, for recording a fireworks show, and recording on a roller coaster?

  • @RyanTimms

    @RyanTimms

    7 жыл бұрын

Someone else recently asked me about fireworks via email. I have never tried, but I'd imagine taking shots of fireworks with a gopro is extremely difficult. That being said I would recommend a low ISO and a high shutter speed. for fireworks. As for rollercoaster, the settings above should work just fine for that. Just always think about your end product and how you will "deliver" or post the video. if youre going to end in 1080 try filming in 2.7 or 4k and downsizing in post.

I've been using iMovie to edit my videos and when publishing to YOuTube the audio gets distorted and choppy. So I've stoped using my GoPro. But I just started with LumaFusion, so hopefully in conjunction with these settings the AV will be much better. Have you had or do you know the cause for the choppy audio? Thanks again!

How’s it going Ryan how’s everything. I wanted to ask you without editing in post which is the best settings that come out best for cinematic look straight from the GoPro. My videos look grainy and not so clear whereas I have a friend with a older hero + and his video looks twice as clear.

Regarding your inquiry on video editing, a good editor for the average person is Movavi. A one-time 50 dollar download from Amazon. I have used the big brands and have found Movai to be more reliable and practical. Enough features, such that it will take a couple of years to figure them all out.

Using my GoPro 5 Black to capture my road bike rides. Also using GoPro Quik to edit my clips.

In terms of the battery. Have you tried non-gro brand batteries? If so do you find them as good as gopro hero 5 and/or would you recommend for them or against.

Thank you so much for the video. I am mostly a audio post production guy, but I'm starting to do a lot of video post production in Adobe Premiere. I've been asked to shoot some interviews/presentations on a green screen and was considering buying some type of DSLR camera, but I have a Go Pro hero 5. Can I use a Go pro hero 5 for green screen presentation shoots? Can you recommend some settings? I will be recording the audio from lav mics to an external recorder and syncing it to the video in post. Thanks!

you CAN use the go pro, but consider using something like a DSLR. the GoPro uses a relatively weak codec, so keying out all of the green screen in premiere will be difficult. You want something with a much higher bitrate if possible.

Hi man! First of all, congratulations for your videos..they're helping me very much! Let me introduce myself...I'm an Italian youtuber and at the moment I'm using my gopro hero 5 for bike rides and motovlogging (I have already bought a Boya external microphone but pretty soon I guess I'll take the rode smartlav, which is absolutely better at all!). I have a question for you: right now I'm recording also vlogs in my garage but I was looking for another external mic (a directional one) for improving my video's audio quality...The choise is between the rode video micro and the rode videomic pro.. What do you recommend to me? I watched also other videos on youtube and I understood that actually the rode video micro has a better quality/price ratio compared to the video mic pro...and in my opinion the video mic pro costs 100€/$ plus but I don't see all this difference...what do you think about that? (Sorry for my not excellent english 😂) P.s. If you have time I was wondering if you want to talk on facebook because you're very brilliant in this field and I think you may help me :)

Emiliano Salino hi there. Thanks for the long comment. Unfortunately I am very ill at the moment so need a tiny bit of a break lol. But you can email me at ryanbtimms@gmail.com I haven't used the micro or smart lav but if you are concerned about budget I think the micro is a good option. Filming in the garage might be your issue with the sound. Try in a room with more stuff in it (bedroom or closet) just to test the sound. It's likely just lots of sound bouncing around the garage than a crummy mic. Hope this helps!

yeah you've been very helpful! In this moment my problem is exactly the budget so I think I'm gonna buy the video micro (also because about microphones and sounds I'm not so good so maybe starting with this microphone that is not the top and it has limited regulations could be easy for me) ... maybe in the future I'll buy the video mic pro :D I have already tested the gopro's on board mic in many places like you suggested me but my intention was to take a directional microphone to solve the sound boucing (and I hope I'll fix this problem)...thanks for all! Get well soon :)

Jonathan Segal I’ve been a long time user and meet really used much final cut. I’ve only ever edited 1 project on it honestly, but don’t have a huge want to change. I enjoy my creative cloud and that I have access to all sorts of software as my creative process changes and grows.
