What are the benefits of GI tags and how are they awarded?
A geographical indication or GI is a sign used on products that have a specific geographical origin and possess qualities or a reputation that are due to that origin
In order to function as a GI, a sign must identify a product as originating in a given place.
Also, the qualities, characteristics or reputation of the product should be essentially due to the place of origin
Since the qualities depend on the geographical place of production, there is a clear link between the product and its original place
Geographical Indications are part of the intellectual property rights that coms under the Paris Convention for the Protection of Industrial Property
GI is governed by the World Trade Organisation’s Agreement
In India, Geographical Indications registration is administered by the Geographical Indications of Goods (Registration and Protection) Act of 1999
It came into effect from 15th September 2003
The first product in India to be awarded with GI tag was the Darjeeling Tea in 2004-05
Geographical indications are typically used for agricultural products, foodstuffs, wine and spirit drinks, handicrafts, and industrial products.
In India, any associations or persons or producers or a body established under any law can apply for a GI tag if the applicant represents the interests of producers of the goods concerned
They are awarded only after a thorough historical and empirical inquiry.
If a product's origin can’t be effectively traced between two states, then either both should be given ownership or none at all
The respective states and the community need to actively promote the product and its respective industry
BENEFITS OF GI TAGS
GI tags offer legal protection to the products and prevents unauthorized use
It make it easy for consumers to get quality products of desired traits, assured of its authenticity
GI tagged goods can promote the economic prosperity of its producers by increasing their demands in national and international markets. Thereby contributing to the country’s economic growth

I love Mysore Pak!! However it's hard to get authentic Mysore Pak in North. And you can't always go to Banglore to get some.

India has been a playground for global citizens who came to rule here thus bringing culture, languages, products and literature. Since the natives didn't rule in India in recent past except Maharaja Ranjit Singh of Lahore, Nawab of Hyderabad, Tipu Sultan of Mysore, Chatrapati Shiva ji Maratha and Akbar the great, therefore India can't boast about local stuff like Kobe Beef. Punjabi food is popular throughout India but its mix of Turkish, Persian and Greek origin. Well The Hindu remains the only newspaper in India for those who have brains, culture and ethics.
GI TAG FOR SAFFRON (ZAFRAAN) THIS YEAR JUNE 2020
Bengal rasgulla has got GI tag before odisha.
Odisha and West Bengal both got gi tag for their own version of rosogolla. prestigious newspaper like hindu shouldn't represent this type of incomplete information. এরা বুঝে না যে রসগোল্লাটা বাঙালির কাছে কেবল একটা মিষ্টি নয় বরং এটা বাঙালির সমাজের একটা অঙ্গ।

Narration is very boring, stop relying on civil service aspirants, they are turning out to be a burden for the nation!
