    The Mexican federal government used to have (I don't know if it's still in place) a project to match donations from Mexicans abroad to social programmes. Some states went even further and also matched that money, meaning the for every dollar donated, three would go to infrastructure development in their communities of origin.

    Does anyone have experience with/ can recommend a specific Money Transfer Provider company that can accept these paper remittances/ payment coupons for deposit to a US Treasury Direct bank account? so technically its international as it is from usa to united states but in their system I think it still shows as united states to united states - the company Remittly doesn't handle US to US and the agent I spoke to had no clue what I was talking about with paper remittances ! ????

    Thank you once more! One question though: do the data include estimations of informal channels, like hawala etc.? Because I know that among irregular migrants as well as refugees who did not yet obtain their paperwork, remittances are still common - as soon as they have any money, that is. And for instance Eritrea is a country without the possibility for refugees to send money back other than by hawala channels, so everything is done informally.

    Official data usually do not include informal remittances. There is a new video coming out next week on remittances data.

    Thank you Melissa for this brief and succinct info on remittances. I am interested in recent literature on in-kind and social remittances. Can you assist me?

    To start your literature search, I suggest reading up on Peggy Levitt's foundational work on the topic and her more recent studies. From there, I would look at recent articles in the following journals: Migration, Remittances, and Sustainable Development in Africa; Migration and Development; and the Journal of Ethnic and Migration Studies

    could someone explain the link between remittances and migration? Thanks

  • @MelissaSiegelMigration

    A very common association between the two occurs in instances of labor migration. If just one person migrates to find work, they will oftentimes send a portion of their earnings back to family or friends in the place of origin. Therefore, migration creates a remittance-sending situation.

    if remittance only for abroad or it is also used city to another city?

  • @MelissaSiegelMigration

    @MelissaSiegelMigration

    Both are possible! City-to-city remittances would be included in the term "internal remittances" meaning that the transfer is handled entirely within one country.

    is there a video on the monthly bill remittances, say..utility bills...and the proper way to fill them out with endorsement/verbiage so that payment can be made!

  • @MelissaSiegelMigration

    @MelissaSiegelMigration

    3 жыл бұрын

    There is no specific content on the ways to fill out bills since this differs depending on the transfer provider you are using. I would say the best way to ensure you are following proper procedures is to get in direct contact with your money transfer provider. They will be able to detail exactly how to fill out your transfers to avoid problems.

    @@MelissaSiegelMigration ok when you say "money transfer provider" who exactly is that? suppose a bill is sent from Comcast for cable services...is Comcast the money transfer provider? the reason I ask is because I have been accepting these statements and remittances and mailing back in the envelope provide and payment has not gone through and all these companies say they only accept payment by debit or credit card or a separate personal check from a separate bank- in other words, fiat instruments- and it is my understanding that for them to claim that, it is a violation of public policy (HJR 192) thank you

    Is the definition of remittances include money sent from urban âreas to the rural areas?

  • @MelissaSiegelMigration

    Remittances can be both international (between countries) and internal (within a country, often from urban to rural areas).

    Mam... Can we use it as for paying money to someone on the basis of remuneration. Example... There is only one member who has not paid his remittance and he has promised to pay before the end of this month..... Is it right here the usage of remittance??

  • @MelissaSiegelMigration

    @MelissaSiegelMigration

    Thank you for your question. There are indeed cases where remittances are used for remuneration. Often, this type of remuneration is paying off debts, for example, from loans that financed the migrant's journey.
