What Are Period Cramps?
In this video, Justin from the Institute of Human Anatomy, shows a cross-section of the female reproductive system, and explains the basic mechanics of period cramps.
Other factors than what are mentioned in the video can also be at play, such as high levels of prostaglandins, uterine fibroids, endometriosis, abnormal uterus development, etc.
Who knew biology could be so complicated??

****Clarification*****
Endometriosis is a complicated condition, and is deserving of a entire video in itself.
Despite affecting 176 million women worldwide, it's origin and cause are still hotly debated, and poorly understood.
Several theories exist as to its origin and cause, but nothing is seen to be definitive. For those curious to learn more about the possible origins of this debilitating condition, feel free to browse through these recently published research papers.

Honestly, I’ve had two natural births and period cramps (to me) are waaaay worse. Labour cramps start off pretty light and then intensify, but are limited to under 2 minutes at a time (even when they are close together, they are still only about a minute long) and walking around helps. period cramps are seemingly random and can go on excruciatingly for hours at a time and all I want to do is go back to bed for the day lol

is what you're saying real? i've had the worst period cramps and always thinking about labor as it would be worse, i'm like afraid of pregnancy and labor
@Peg__
Жыл бұрын
@@sanasoussou291 It's real. I gave birth at 22 and I couldn't tell when contractions were happening, due to period cramps that hurt much worse. I'm 42 now and stand by the statement that my period cramps are worse than labor. It's okay to be nervous or afraid of any future pain, if you want to have kids. Well before birth, you make a birthing plan of your wants and needs for the hospital or birthing center. You bring that paperwork with you, so the professionals can accommodate you the best they can. You can absolutely put in your plan, that you want pain management. You'll feel the pressure and tightness of the contraction, except you won't feel the pain. Your body, your choice.

Here is a tip for anyone with painful periods that I learned from my own personal experience: stop eating/ drinking ingredients that cause inflammation. This includes high fructose corn syrup (soda), high amounts of added sugar (candy, sugary cereal), caffeine ( soda, caffeinated tea) and high amounts of salt (potato chips). It is ok to eat these things occasionally, but what I recommend you try to do is to stop eating/ drinking these things a week before your next period and the first couple of days on your period. Or even better, try cutting out these ingredients for a month before your period and see if that helps. Also, eat snacks with iron and magnesium, like unsalted sunflower seeds and pumpkin seeds. I use to have horribly painful periods (the kind of pain where you can’t get out of bed) and my nutritionist recommended I cut out these ingredients from the food I eat daily. I can confirm that cutting out these ingredients helped take away so much of my pain! I am no longer bedridden on first day of my period! Try it!

TW: Graphic!! My period cramps feel a combination of the following: - that contraction you get when you're getting muscle spasms from diarrhea. You try to poop it out but nothing comes out. - that blunt, yet strong pain you get on a surgical site after the anasthesia wears off and you're sitting in the cold. The pain radiates to your knees. - a milder form of pain is like getting cuts and scratches on your knee after slipping and that site has turned warm, tender, and painful to the touch after taking a shower - like ordinary leg cramps but concentrated on your abdomen as well as your booty! D': You can't walk from this, you will just have to stand/sit still until it goes away! Each spasm makes my heart race and my arms and legs turn really cold. I break into a cold sweat and I could only just keep a straight face, breathe it out, and continue with my office work. Worst experience was from expelling a huge solid chunk of my period half the size of my palm and I was struggling to walk my way to the bed. My vision was threatening to turn black that time and I could only hide under a blanket and two bed comforters while I shivered. That's only the pain. Other nuisances include: - nausea - anxiety - a desperate need for cuddles and affection - loss of appetite - breast pains - migraines - poor quality sleep Pain starts one to two weeks before day one of my period and it gradually gets worse until like day 3-5 of my period. Everything after my ovulation is a downward spiral. I get bad acne during this time too and I bloat 🥲 I guess the upside of this is that I feel like nothing can hurt me much up to this point, which is probably why I can endure different kinds of physical pain. I once had my upper arm impaled on a steel fence from doing parkour, had my leg snagged by a barbed wire trap, had my jaw locked and dislocated from a fall, and I came out alright ☺️

The most worst thing is you don't feel comfortable with sitting or laying even walking. Everything seems irritating
fun fact: a period isn’t a punishment for not getting pregnant. human fetuses are parasitic, and can seriously harm the woman carrying them. the uterus therefore builds up a wall of nutrition for the fetus, so it doesn’t suck the woman dry of nutrients. the uterus also protects itself by removing any faulty eggs or embryos, by shedding the wall.

That was me except I had diarrhea. Here is the answer: Trust me--I know. You need to take a form of *ibuprofen* before the pain starts. Some women's bodies make an excess of prostaglandins that irritate nerve endings. It's gets into your system and causes excessive pain, nausea and diarrhea for some women. I saw 2 drs on a TV show discussing this decades ago and it literally changed my life. With ibuprofen (Motrin) I could survive and function normally instead of being so sick every month. It's not about taking a pain killer, it's about taking a **"prostaglandin inhibitor."** MUST be a prostaglandin inhibitor. I feel for you.

Girls, one thing that might give you cramps is the stress, so when you feel like you are near the date of having your period, try some relaxation methods and disconnect. This worked wonders to me. I tried it in my 2 last years of Highschool and those 2 years were painless. One thing i must say,if your period makes you blackout, throw up, or not beign able to do things, go to a gynecologist. That is NOT normal ok? Please go, and if they reccomend some medicine without doing tests, refuse it, and force your doctor to make tests, because you are in your right to know what's going on. Many women suffer from endometriosis every year, and are diagnosed years later, and can be infertile because of that. It's no joke please, in gynecologism there is a lot of misogyny, which is sarcastic. So please, be safe.
Watching this while having period cramps. Thank you Justin!

My mom was diagnosed with Indometrioses in 1967 after my 2nd oldest brother was born. Being told "no more children" 10 miscarriages later, I was born on January 6, 1971, and a month to the day early. When I was 6 months old, she had a partial hysterectomy, then the other final hysterectomy 6 months after that. My mom was so sick after having me. Her aunt took me in and cared for me until I was a year and a half. It put her in the hospital so much and made her so sick that she could barely take care of me because I was just too tiny. I learned from her that it's also hereditary in our family. It's what was the cause of her grandmother getting cancer down there.
It's basically labour, just squeezing out the lining instead of a full baby.

@@SatanicGhostCat All depends on a person, there's no "should" or "shouldn't" when it comes to bodies and medicine in general. Some people are just built this way, even if relaxed and everything else done correctly they might still experience pain. Just as some of us have horrible cramps some don't at all, some have very painful child birth and suffer lot of damages some don't (my mother told me it was very easy for her for example). You'd rather have a person prepared for eventual discomfort than tell them all the time it "shouldn't" happen then have them freak out why it hurts because they were always told it won't.

It's normal, but not fun. I used to throw up about once every six periods, so like twice a year. I would shake, hyperventilate, and throw up. Since I had babies, I don't have that anymore, just normal cramps. Oh, and those period cramps were way worse than giving birth. WAY. WORSE. I gave birth naturally, and it was really not that bad. Intense more than painful.

My periods are irregular and so they vary in both cycle length and period length too. I’ve had 2 day periods (rare) and up to 6 days (also rare), but mainly my periods are on average 3-4 days. But also extremely painful
@Black-Swan-007
4 жыл бұрын
"Average" is just what happens when you add all the samples together and divide by how many samples you have. So if I ask 20 women how long their cycles are and they give me the numbers: 7, 8, 9, 7, 5, 4, 2, 10, 9, 6, 5, 8, 3, 5 (I just picked these numbers at random), I add them all together to equal 88, then divide by 20 which gives me 4.4. That's the average length of these women's periods, which fits very nicely between three and five. It doesn't mean that the average woman has a period that lasts three to five days, it means that periods on average last between three to five days. That's all. Mine typically lasts seven, severe bleeding the first two or three days, then it tapers off for the next two to three and the last day or two is usually very light spotting. One time I had a period last less than 48 hours. Another time I had a normal period, then two weeks later had another one. Typically I have less than five total a year, sometimes as few as two, sometimes 12. My cycle is so unpredictable that even those period tracking apps can't help me.
