I can't understand ontology, because I have an issue with the word "being". As apposed to what?

As opposed to non existence; since the word being is by category associated with the word existence. Being gains it's distinction from existence by focusing in on itself at a more intrinsic, personal level. Think of it like this: Suppose you are a writer, and you attempting to describe an angry person. To describe him, you would be more likely to say 'He is angry because it's attuned to his very being', as opposed to 'He is angry, because it's attuned to his very existence'. If we wanted to focus on the pure idea of anger from this character, we would choose the former over the latter, and for something that is akin to a word like ontology, it effectively boils down to create the most concentrated idea in it's own respect, in it's own being.

A year late, hope you have gotten an answer too your question already. To chime in, I'd sa that Epistemology (and the notion that we can gain knowledge about reality for example) is in itself an ontology (a way of being) although not specified or limited. I wish you a great day random internet person! :)
