What are honors colleges? The pros, the cons, and who should apply.

Honors colleges (or honors programs) are special educational opportunities for high-achieving students who want to attend public universities or even sometimes larger private universities. The idea is to create a small, close-knit cohort of exceptional students within the larger university so it feels like you're getting a private liberal arts education without missing out on all the benefits of a big state school. In return, students get a ton of great perks including: scholarship money, priority registration, special dorms, access to the best professors on campus, etc. You can expect to work a little harder, but it's well worth the investment.

It can be a really good option for many students. You can often save a lot of money and still get an exceptional education.

Do you have any insight on Barret honors college at ASU?

Barrett is one of the best honors colleges out there. It produces a lot of Fulbright Scholars and other academic leaders. And it’s vastly superior to the general education you would get at ASU.

Which one would you choose - Dartmouth or UVA Jefferson Scholarship?

For those who don't know, the Jefferson Scholarship at University of Virginia is a highly selective, four year, full-ride, merit-based scholarship based on leadership and academic achievement. Since they cover the entire cost of tuition, it would be hard to pass this up for any school. The only reason you might choose Dartmouth over UVA is if Dartmouth offered you close to a full-ride based on financial need (Dartmouth doesn't offer merit-based scholarships, only financial-based aid). Otherwise, I'd 100% go to UVA as a Jefferson Scholar.

The Honors College at Rutgers has an excellent reputation. It's a small, stand-alone college within the larger university. One advantage of this program is that you're automatically considered for admission when you apply to Rutgers; you don't have to fill out a separate application or write additional essays (which many other honors programs require). Also, in addition to earning an annual scholarship (the amount varies based on your credentials), you get to apply to other scholarships that are reserved exclusively for honors students. Sounds like a win-win situation to me.
