What Are Guitar Preamp Pedals And How To Use Them

Музыка

What's the deal with preamp pedals? If our amps already have a preamp section why would we want preamp pedals? Well that's exactly the question we are going to answer in this episode. Let me know in the comments what your favorite preamp pedals are or if this is the first time you've ever hear of them.

Too bad the whole pedal/belt clip thing didn't catch on. Eventually, instead of using a pedal board, a guitarist could just wear their massive collection of pedals across their chest like an ammo belt.

Perfectly said!!! Josh's playing/songs are the perfect example of songwriting for the sake of making great songs, not the sake of being flashy, showing off, and making a name for himself as a guitarist.... It's the epitome of the art of minimalistic guitar playing that still fills the room with great sound, carries the song, captures the emotion and vibe of the tunes, and is complete and freakin awesome without any unnecessary notes/playing and is just freakin cool!!!

Unbelievable!!! I’ve been so sick of my Marshall class5’s boomy/muddy clean tone that I usually stack fuzzes in front of it. After watching this video I tuned up the broadcast to cut out the lows and boost the clean and it feels like I have a killer new amp. It’s probably the best tone I’ve had. It seems like half the pedals on my board are to cover up the mud but now I want to hear the fundamental tone. Fresh Blank Canvas. Damn, can’t thank you enough for this one.

I have a Voodoo Lab Overdrive that I bought in 1999, and apparently I got one of a bad batch of pedals went out that year with some faulty component that overloaded the circuit with bass (nicknamed the "Sullivan mod" after the guy who screwed up the batch). I put the thing in a box, but 20 years later I emailed them and they said oh yeah we'll fix it free of charge no problem, we know exactly what the issue is. The pedal now sounds incredible. I am so impressed with their customer service, good folks there at Voodoo Lab.

Most people know them for 'Whip It', but they are one of the most sublime post-punk/new wave acts of the 70s and 80s, and have gone on to influence so many bands. 'Are We Not Men?' is a must-listen for any enthusiast of weirdo punk rock.

none ever mentions that the Boss preamp was also used by Dave Murray from Iron Maiden in the 80's to boost his 50w jcm 800 Marshall heads (1987-2204 models). The mxr dist+ he was also using, was just added for solos. Basically he used the boss preamp and a mxr 10 band eq as always on pedals since they had no stiwtch.

I CAN engage the amp AND the DI'd signal at the same time by leaving the "mute" switch off. It means I get to run my effects into the amp and maintain some of the amp's character and frequency response in the DI'd signal and also have the amp running in its full capacity, as my de facto monitor. Or, I can engage the mute switch if we don't want any sound coming from the amp itself" "So just like that Tube Screamer pedal into the PA except with an amp" *deep sigh*

Like Josh said, it pushed my Fender Twin into overdrive, and gave my Orange Pedal Baby 100 a much needed character boost (the pedal baby is basically just a clean power amp designed to get the most out of your pedals, therefore it loves having the Clover at the beginning of the chain )

A preamplifier is a circuit that amplifies a low level signal (less than 1V) and transforms it into a line level signal (a few volts). That is useful or necessary in order to get enough gain (amplification) in the power stage. So it's a cascading process: from low to mid and then high level signal (power level). That's all a preamp is, so any device that does that can be called a preamp, wether it distorts and colors the sound or not, that doesn't has anything to do with the "preamp" denomination. Specifically for guitar pedals, that name could be used for any pedal that tries to imitate what a preamp does inside the actual guitar amp, but essentially, the first pedal in the chain that takes the guitar signal and amplifies to line level is doing the job of the preamplifier. Thanks for the video!

After reading about many guitarists in the 70's using the Echoplex tape echo unit not only for delay but as a preamp i was always curious... About 2 years ago i got an Echoplex preamp pedal and i use it, always on, in front of my Marshall JCM 2000... Its amazing what it does to the sound, subtle at first, unless you crank it, but then after using for a while and you turn it off, something just sounds 'wrong' - It colors the harmonic content of the amp in really nice way and its become a must have pedal for me...

Recovering the Satellites is one of my favorite records of all time! Also, Fork was a jam, man. Great content here, Josh. I really respect that you’re so passionate about your job, and that you don’t care if people buy your pedals or not, that you want them to be able to find the right one for them. It’s part of what keeps me coming back to your channel, and what keeps me buying your products. You guys are awesome.

Well he cares if you buy his pedals, he just doesn't care if "you" buy his pedals; he has encyclopedic knowledge of pedal history to their guts that create what you hear; he knows how to create something the right way--and that is why he goes by if you build it they will come. He said Boss was his favorite pedal company ever. A lot of people might turn their noses up at that--but Boss (or Roland) created effects with passion--before most people had effects or even little idea what devices should do. They created pedals to fulfill what the musician wanted, and what the propellerheads in the lab knew was a quality tool; kept going to cover all the corners in latest trends and built out a portfolio that gave every pedal maker who came after a template to work from.

A band I love that other people usually only know a few songs from is Tonic. Their whole catalog is awesome. And for a preamp pedal, the one in my rig is the Voodoo Labs Giggity. I have seen that the Edge used it, as well, but that's not why I got it. It does a great job of evening out sounds when changing guitars, and making my guitar sound clearer.

The band everyone should check out is Genesis! Growing up when I did, I thought Genesis was just “Invisible Touch”, etc. It was a revaluation(pun intended) for me in the early 90’s when I discovered they used to be a Prog band with Peter Gabriel (The guy that did Sledgehammer?, yes!) singing & Phil Collins was actually just an amazing drummer! Genesis did everything first! Used 666 in a song lyric(sorry Iron Maiden) Guitar tapping (sorry Eddie Van Halen) Classical guitar (Sorry Randy Rhoads, Yngwie, Richie Blackmore, etc) Must listen Genesis: Nursery Cryme, Foxtrot, Selling England by the Pound, The Lamb Lies Down on Broadway

Genesis indeed probably had the best writing and orchestration of all prog bands, but your history is off-base on most of those 'firsts'. More often than not, some cat had already done it well by the mid-60s. exhibit A: Vittorio Camardese, shredding his balls off in 1965 (at 2:00 here). no drive (a crutch? i'll admit to relying on for most axes when tapping) needed, only superlative technique: kzread.info/dash/bejne/iXho3K-qe66do9I.html

You make amazing videos guys. This was a question I’ve had for awhile. “Stuck in my Locker” was dope. A story of mine is that I was a worship pastor for awhile doubling as a lead guitarist and I was using an MXR dyna comp as my pre-amp(I guess, I didn’t know what I was doing) but I used it to crank some extra juice out of my double barrel and really enjoyed the sound until the mxr started giving me this god awful buzz and I sold it. Thank you for all things JHS. ✌🏼❤️😘

I used to listen to Recovering the satellites all the way through all the time. Miller’s Angels was one of my favorite tunes. Another band from that era that I think was overlooked a lot was Soul Asylum. Everyone knew Runaway Train but I preferred their later titles like Misery and String of Pearls. I sometimes use an ART tube Pre Studio MP in my bass rig. I’ve used it for vocals and acoustic guitar as well, but have never used it in my electric setup. I might try that sometime.

He gets relegated to the list of one hit wonders but I have been a fan of his for several decades. He’s also a monster guitar player (check out Fantastic Planet Of Love from his Life’s Too Short album).
