What in the world are glasses even made from?! Well, as it turns out lots and lots of different materials. Each could really get its own video, but lets start with broad strokes, and focus on some of the high quality offerings out there. I won't get into the cheap injection plastics out there like you might find on dollar store sunglasses, just know its out there. The big boys excluding horn are mentioned in this video! I love horn frames, but today they just aren't common, so we'll save that for another time, just know it behaves similiarly to 12mm acetate just thinner and lighter! YAY!
For frame materials, it's best to match a material to what you do! This video will give you a little insight as to the advantages of the most common quality materials out there, and I hope serves you well in the hunt for the perfect glasses!

I discovered that eyeglasses made from ultem is super light. After getting my prescription glasses, it's still very light and after wearing for hours, I don't realised it!

A brand name of TR90, very light, very tough, and very cheap to produce, the only problem with them is to keep it cheap many mfg employ a very cheap hinge mechanism that tends to twist or snap off easily. Hands down the most common failure point on those, but yes the weight is unreal!

If I'm eyeing on affordable frames, would I be better off with acetate or TR90 frames with metal core temples (so it's more adjustable)? I hear ppl rave about how acetate is the ultimate plastic for glasses, but I'm worried about constantly need readjusting with cheaper acetate given that I live in a tropical climate

Solid considerations. On the budget end and that climate, I would lean a little more towards tr90 or any metal frame to limit the needs for readjustment from environmental changes (temperature and moisture). Not that it would be terrible but you would definitely need regular adjustment if a low grade acetate, particularly if going with a thinner frame style :)

No worries! Monel is a great frame material. With modern ray ban I would be more concerned about a hinge failure than the monel chassis failing 😁. The benefits of monel are its durability and adjustability. On some ways I would put it above titanium!

Hi! I was interested in getting some ray-ban glasses, to be particular ray-ban 6346, but the reviews say it is very lightweight, delicate, and can break easy. They say its because the metal is a monel metal and because it is so thin. Sorry to take up your time but do you think the will hold up and be sturdy? any extra thoughts? Ray ban is made pretty cheaply these days and uses a very thin monel. Monel at a proper thickness and especially used as a core material to a high grade outer coating like savile rows annealing process of 18k rolled gold is a top notch material. What fails on ray ban is the weak solder joints. Not necessarily the material itself.... but yes... most ray bans aren't worth the material theyre made of these days. There are some good examples out there, but judt like lawnmowers... you wont get good quality results from a big box chain.

1:54 - slipping glasses are especially annoying if your hands are full or bound behind your back so you can't push them up your nose!

🤣 I'm gonna leave the bound component alone, but yes!! Nothing worse than slipping glasses with your hands covered in oil or mud or worse 🤣
