As someone who just built his first rotary, I’m glad I also went with E&J. And yes, hood prop failure was quite entertaining 😏. FYI you get a shoutout in my most recent video 🤘

Kyle, you are killing it with the info! For topics, new rotary people normally ask, which oil should they use (synth vs conventional)? if pre mixing, how much should they premix? for modified engines, which spark plugs should they run? Personally, I would love to hear about side seal clearance for modified turbo engines, and steps to take for a 10k rpm engine.

+1 for side seal clereance and I would have liked to know what he also thinks of the 0 clearence assembly for the sides seal on rx8 n / a. What does he also think of the side seal atkins cryo and the apex seal atkins cryo?

RIP cold air intake. And also I want an Apex seal that will never break, so I may try the E&J. It's just a street engine but I can't afford another one so if they break and destroy my dorito I'm selling the car for a loss. Preventing that from happening is worth the expense.

Some great videos lately. Do you use super glue on the corner pieces when assembling? Also with a race dash giving you constant feedback would you have picked up on the failed injector issue before detonation? Thanks in advance

Would like to see you discuss your experience running E85 in the rotary application. Lots of conflicting experience but reliability seems to be the big question. Would love to hear what your experience is.

Interesting, I’ve never heard of any issues regarding reliability running e85 on rotaries. In fact quite the opposite. I’d argue that they stand to benefit more by switching to e85 then piston engines due to the higher octane rating and cooler temperatures, both of which solve our major concerns.

@@Popes_Projects That's interesting. Perhaps its the difference between running race/quality E85 vs street/old E85. Some engine builders have seen problems with housing scoring from the 'dryer' alcohol and then a weird sludge build up as well. People definitely make more power on E85, but there seems to be some reports of seal lubrication problems. I'd love to run it in the future, just posts like this concern me: www.rx7club.com/alternative-fuels-249/rotor-housings-e85-1096476/

@@camer140 alcohol specific premix is a must, I’m not sure the factory OMP would cut it with all the extra fuel washing things down.

The comments around long dyno deceleration without an omp. I recently lost a set of iannetti irotary steel seals to this effect. Can you go into more detail about how to deal with this problem in a race application that will not have an omp?

Hi Kyle! I'm in the process of rebuilding my RX8 renesis engine with a basic street port for a drift weekend in a couple of months. But I have long term plans to rebuild it as a renesis + GSL-SE hybrid turbo engine. In regards to the apex seals, what do you think about building the hybrid with unbreakable seals and then using them to get the tune right. And then once the tune is rock solid, switch the unbreakables out for ceramics? Or is that over kill? I'm _only_ chasing around 400whp I've just heard horror stories about people killing fresh engines because they did the tuning process badly and exploded the ceramics within days.

  • @KyleMohanRacing

Highly recommend a set of unbreakable / Bendable seals like the E&Js - KMR seals. Or any seal you feel good about. I think you have a good idea with running them before going to anything more expensive. I've been happy with the steel E & J seals since I switched as we are always pushing the limits but I see applications for all types.

@@KyleMohanRacing Awesome, thanks for the reply. From your experience would you say that ceramics in a safely tuned motor will cause noticeably less housing wear than a tradition seal? I'm just trying to make sure I'm understanding their pro's and con's correctly. Unbreakable: (won't shatter from detonation but similar wear to oem) Ceramic: (may shatter on det but far less wear on housing and self) Is that about right?
