I did not know that about dragonflies! They stay in nymph form for up to three years? That’s amazing! Also amazing that they reach adulthood with all the predators around. We had a small lake in our backyard while I was growing up (in New Jersey) and dragonflies were In abundance in the spring and summer.

Just the job ! Playing around in a bucket of water in February, it is OK until you get your sleeves wet, then you live with it the rest of the day. There is a very heathy Newt population in that small pond, it will be even better next year in the new larger size pond, I have not seen mud like that for a while, brings back memories, we are also starting to get warmer weather, although only around 18 deg now, it has brought the Hummingbird Hawkmoths out of their slumber, it is good to see people are installing nice size ponds, everyone benefits from that. Stay safe! Chris B.

I enjoy the pond work so much, but particularly in the warmer weather ;) I can't wait to start the next part of this, and the rest of the garden, some great features going in and of course all with nature in mind :) I hope the hummingbird hawkmoths fancy coming this way again this year - I remember reading on BBC ages ago that on D-Day there was an absolute swarm of them in huge numbers that came across the channel - some do over-winter here now but they make a "bee-line" for my Red Valerian in the south facing front garden, an absolute joy to watch :) Did you HAVE to mention you're enjoying 18 degrees?! ;) I'm absolutely thrilled at the interest and amount of people that are making these habitats Chris - speak soon, Joel

Just made a little wildlife pond for a friend Joel, using your videos as guidance, so many thanks. After a month, she now is worried about the mosquito larvae showing in numbers. With no fish, what is the best way to control mosquito's? I tried to explain it's a trade off, that other predators will come and help suppress Mosquito's, but at the moment it's all mosquito larva. Bit of a toughie this one? I even said to put some Bat boxes up even though it's a city urban garden.

  • @WildYourGardenWithJoelAshton

    @WildYourGardenWithJoelAshton

    3 жыл бұрын

Hi there Salalalam! Thank you so much - that's really appreciated - the snails, as you rightly say, usually come to the ponds via their eggs stuck to bird legs or on some of the plants we put in the ponds (again as eggs). The newts, frogs, toads etc incredibly find their way to the ponds by themselves - I am not so sure there were this amount of newts when we first looked into the pond before stating the job and the snow! :) We do put hornwort into all the ponds we either create or renovate as it is such a good plant, along with spiked water milfoil for oxygenating and clearing the ponds - I hope that helps, I'll be here if you have any other questions :) Best wishes, and thank you again - Joel

Thanks so much for your kind comment :) I actually found out the other day that frogs in Alaska can freeze, remain in that state and then thaw out as if nothing has happened! I also will be talking about this on the livestream as a friend spotted two frogs that had been mating and then totally frozen in her pond - this is what made me research it and find out about the ones in Alaska - I'll be looking into it further :) Mostly though frogs, newts etc will be at the bottom of ponds and unless the ponds are really tiny they can survive the short periods of freeze as the pond retains it's oxygen levels - I do recommend with smaller ponds that tepid water be slowly poured over the surface to help provide breathing holes and of course areas round the edge where birds are also able to drink :) Hope you can join us on Sunday 28th - 3:00pm - am thrilled you're adding a pond to your garden - best wishes, Joel

Do you have time? haha - that's brilliant Donna :) You will have before long. It's good that it's only partially frozen over, even if small it will retain oxygen etc the snails will survive fine and I am still unsure whether these newts found the pond in the last few days to find a mate etc or whether they had been in the pond, I know that frogs can completely freeze and shut their bodies down - in fact on the next livestream I'll be talking about just this, with photo evidence too - a friend found two mating frogs completely frozen under the ice, when it thawed they'd disappeared - which made me look into it further :)

But yes, they should find your pond if there is access to the garden of course and as you can see by the size, they only need small gaps. The snails can be transferred from pond to pond as eggs on bird's legs etc and quite often are already eggs on some of the pond plants that we introduce to client ponds. Best wishes, Joel

Hi there Felix - it doesn't technically benefit a pond, although it is absolutely ok in moderation and does provide some form of "cover" or at least shade. I have a fair bit in my barrel pond at the moment, usually transferred by birds and amphibians and it looks quite good at the moment, but let's see if I'm saying that in a few more weeks when I can't see the water! I usually just use a standard kitchen sieve, or of course a fishing net works fine if you need a longer reach Felix - hope that is helpful, best wishes to you - Joel

Hi Joel, I have a small wildlife pond (2x1.5m) which I built a year ago. I was considering putting another small pond nearby, however I’m not sure if it would be better to make my pond bigger instead. What option do you think is best for wildlife; two small ponds or a big one?!

Hi Sam, utmost apologies for the delay in responding, I don't seem to be getting all the notifications re comments and am having to trawl the videos to ensure I'm acknowledging everyone. However, as the pond you have is relatively small (but still important!) if it's not too much effort then I'd certainly increase the size of it - that's not to say that several adjacent ponds aren't good, but they do need to be a reasonable size - of course if you have enough space for a 4m x 3m or similar then leave your existing pond in situ and create another one :) I hope that helps - best wishes and apologies again for the tardy response - Joel

I'm not too sure, but I would have thought so as dragonfly nymphs are voracious - it's when the diving beetles reach adulthood that they're one of the most voracious in a pond, even preying on small fish. Hopefully your dragonfly nymphs will be feasting on these, but I've not really heard of it or come across it - you've given ME food for thought though now! Sorry I couldn't be more specific - best wishes, Joel

Hello :) I get asked this a lot or suggestions from people that fish would "finish the pond off nicely" - I like fish, don't get me wrong, but in a wildlife pond they are better left out, they do cause detriment by eating eggs etc of newts and frogs, other larvae - fish do make an impact on mosquito larvae of course, but they're not picky about what they eat :) Best wishes, Joel

Hello again :) I know that Great Crested Newts (in the UK) will travel up to 500 metres to "find" a pond, and they use the pond between February and June for breeding. Whilst ponds continue to be used outside this period grassland, hedgerows, scrub, woodland etc are used for the other months of the year. They usually hibernate between November and February and are usually discovered in frost free places such as below ground in other mammal tunnels, tree roots, dense vegetation, cracks in stone walls and log piles. I am assuming this is the same for all "types" of newts - I have no doubt that with the work you are putting in you will be rewarded with them shortly :) Best wishes, Joel

A very healthy array of amphibians, insect larvae, and snails in those buckets. My pond, although very healthy, gets invaded at night by the dreaded cane toad. It is, unfortunately, such a pest here that we have to cull them having multiplied to plague proportions in the past 80 years as they have no natural predators, are threatening biodiversity and the environment, being an introduced species from South America. I would rather have more of the Australian green tree frogs 🐸🐸 (of which we have a few) in the pond than them that's for sure🙂. Have a great weekend.

Yes, I've seen a few documentaries about the cane toad, introduced in the 1930s weren't they? I remember seeing about Water Rats making a big impact on them as they'd somehow managed to get "around" the poison with almost surgical precision! Let's hope they make progress in reducing the numbers sufficiently, but I know these toads have a huge impact on other species, to the point of extinction :/ as always, it's human intervention that messes up nature - can't wait to see some footage of these green tree frogs :) Hope all is good where you are - Joel

I will also get a couple of cane toads on video, especially when I remove them from the pond so viewers understand how bad the problem is, and also green frogs which are around the gardens and sometimes near the pond when cane toads are not in ridiculous numbers. These were indeed introduced in 1935 from Hawaii (although they are originally from South and Central America) to combat the cane beetle that was decimating the sugar industry in Queensland.

Normally I would recommend a native white water lily but in your situation I would recommend fringed water lily or frog bit. You can find them in this section of our website: wildyourgarden.com/product-category/ponds-accessories/pond-plants/floating-aquatics-plants-ponds-accessories/ I hope this is helpful - if you need any advice at all about the best plant please feel free to email us on enquiries@wildyourgarden.com and we'll be happy to help. Hi there Suman, I don't recommend fish for the wildlife ponds I create, very small native ones would be fine but any larger fish would destroy the water quality with their "waste" - there is no need for artificial filters or pumps in these wildlife ponds but the reason that Koi ponds are so expensive to set up is due to the filtration needed to combat their waste. The bigger the pond, the easier it is for it to cope with fish. I like fish by the way, just not in wildlife ponds :) Best wishes, Joel
