Oatmeal for lunch and then a little more 2-3 hours before the first race is my strat. Oatmeal is known for being a good pre-race food, and add in some fruit and you've got a masterpiece.

I used to cramp up almost all the time before practice and races. I was one of the lucky few that was able to eat about anything 3-4 hours before practices/races without throwing up. However, I used to get these really bad cramps in my legs either before, during or after my workouts. I drank a lot of water, so it was a mystery why I got them for a while, but once I started adding more fruit, especially bananas, to my lunch, that changed everything. I figured this out in my training journal because I listed everything in there: what I ran, times, how felt and what I ate, and from that I noticed a pattern...almost every time I had more fruit than usual during lunch I felt much better. Log everything in your trainers journal, guys!

The worst I did was a bowl of uncooked oats in milk before a half marathon. For hours after the race I was lying down with stomach pains as I was so dehydrated. What a dumb ass.

hey, i’m a sophomore in hs, i’m a mile and 2 mile runner going into district, i’m only running 5:04 mile. i’d like to focus the mile and drop it as much as possible... i’ve been dropping off 7-10 seconds each meet off of it. so my question is how should i go about doing that? in the offseason and into XC?

400- you don’t have enough time to go out easy. Take it out hard and do your best not to slow down 1500- don’t lose the lead pack of runners. Stay up there and don’t drop 800- I suck at this event. I don’t have any advice here Edit: spelling

  • @carolineh9537

800- you have to be careful in this event, it is a short race, however you do not want to start out blazing fast, and have your second lap 10 secs slower. You get one move so you have to do it wisely, also don’t wait till the last 50 to start kick. Start when there 250 meters left ish. 1500- just don’t forget its a race that unfoldes over almost 4 laps, so be wise. The third lap is most important so speed up on that one

Pick max 2 events or you'll just be dying in the last event.

For the 400, as a distance runner I just sprint the whole thing. However, for runners who actually do the 400 as their event, they go sprinting first 100, striding the next 200, and dead sprint the last 100. For 800, I heard from a friend that she does mile pace for the first 400 and then sprint the rest, but I think Nick Symmonds likes to do a positive 2 second split.) I have also heard from previous years that the strategy for my track team for 800 was fast first 200 meters, slower next 400, and sprinting last 200 meters.) For 1500, I would try staying with the pack for some time and stay with them as long as you can if you're dying or pass them later if they're dying. However, I'm definitely not experienced as Nick Symmonds on these.

@@carolineh9537 i think the 2nd lap is more important... i always like to pick up the pace some to mess with everybody then slow the 3rd lap down to have enough energy to kick as hard as i can on the 4th lap
