@@Suckeychicken exactly. My roommate's dog isn't the brightest dog out there but she understands our commands and decides to follow them when she wants to. She also sits on the sofa when she's not supposed to, but as soon as I give her a look or say her name, she knows to get off the sofa. Dogs have always understood us, but now we're learning how to have a two-way communication system whereas currently it's just humans talking at dogs. It reminds me of videos I see where babies who can't speak yet know baby sign language or can point to words on a flash card. They understand, we just need to find a way to communicate and then teach it.

We have always communicated with each other. Someone has just added their voice and an aural element to it. My dog scratches me when he wants to go for a walk. I could have him press a button, but I dont want to hear that all the time. This isnt really novel. Humans fall for things when they include language, but any pet owner knows what their dog is feeling or what it wants without this. I dont get the hype. At all. And the academic conversation surrounding this topic disavows any notion of true language comprehension entirely. Im disappointed this is being seen as more than a parlor trick. But it is a good parlor trick.

Seriously, when I am done playing with my dog, I have welts all over my hands and arms, bruises too. And my dog is a medium size dog like Bunny here. If I had a larger dog than this I would have to arm and armor myself. There is no actual harm meant, that is just how they play rough. It is easy to satisfy the tug and throwing the ball. But those activities only accomplish just so much, and dogs needs so much more. Can you imagine being limited to just three activities for your entire life? Yeah.

They are not talking or communicating, the behaviour they are exhibiting is the same as when you teach them to sit. It is a learned behaviour, they have no idea what it means. Even if they press the food button when they want food, they don't know it means food, they just know you will give them food if they press it. Edit: this should not be confused with them asking for food, it's very different.

I saw some other videos that show this. The buttons were at first in locations the dog might connote with certain actions, like the 'outside' button was by the door. Then you'd make the dog have to press the button before the action takes place. That part is classic pavlovian, teach the dog the sound, colour, feel of the button and allow it to commit it to memory. Then you combine the buttons into a board so the dog can start to press buttons in more of a quick succession. Then I think the last step is adding more complicated terms, such as questions and adjectives, and pressing the buttons and replicating the sounds yourself often. This is just my guess from a short session of watching these vids.
