What Afghanistan Was Like Under The Last King | Zahir Shah Documentary

The recent history of Afghanistan has been filled with war and conflict. As a result, many Afghans look to the reign of the last King, Zahir Shah with a sense of nostalgia for a time and place that was once peaceful and stable. From his accession to power in 1933 until his deposition in 1973, the country went through a range of social, economic and political changes. King Zahir Shah’s reign saw Afghanistan embrace modernisation, in a bid to meet the challenges of surviving in a modern world. The modernising drive of the royal family certainly succeeded in improving the Afghan economy and enhancing the state’s capacity; but its policies and initiatives also unleashed a wave of effects which would ultimately play a part in the monarchy’s downfall.

Zahir shah was so popular that even many of the 1980s Mujahideen called for his return after the Soviets were defeated. For example, Sibghatullah Mojadedi and others called for the return of Zahir Shah as leader.

It didn't happen because of Gulbuddin Hekmatyar who was the main figure who hated Zahir. Just imagine if Zahir did come back after Soviets it would've likely led to an end of war and restoration of monarchy, back to stability. Much like Cambodia did in 1993 after their tumultuous and warring period.

This happened again in 2001. All the tribes agreed that the King was a good alternative because he was democratic and I believe not formally from any tribe or involved in the dark politics of recent times. The @#£%ing U.S. lost a perfect opportunity to have a legitimate, democratic government in Afghanistan, you can hardly claim the King of Afghanistan is a U.S. puppet. I hate this timeline so much!

You have to understand warfare has been a part of Afghanistan’s history for millennia. It’s called the Graveyard of Empires for a reason. If the monarchy didn’t survive, I’d imagine that the Taliban won’t last forever either. And keep in mind, the king was overthrown by his own cousin, who could’ve made himself king , but he instead dispensed with all royal titles and made himself president instead.

Broadly speaking it is always interesting to me how similar the events that shape nation-states are, particularly the global South (in academia the term “third world” died out in the ‘70s). Listening to this I couldn’t stop thinking of similar situations, how they played out in Africa, most of Asia, the Middle East and Latin America. The beat changes ever so slightly but the sad song seems to have the same words with the only real difference being the language that song’s lyrics are in.

all those countries lived under the same global stress throughout the same periods and some had shared histories and composition, so it's natural to respond in a similar manner. but its also important to see that modern historians paint a specific narrative for failure or success which may not be the real cause. in other words we try to see them through today's rules and principles. forexample this piece leaves out the bad financial management and the visible corruption in that time that a normal person would have seen.

@Muslim Politician Exactly, the only difference was that Shah of Iran actually modernized Iran a bit, like the railroad and stuff. Zahir Shah was king for over 50 years and the country did not change a bit, thats more than half of a life time. His regn actually paved the road to a volatile and destructive society, over 90% of the population never went to school so you can imagine.
