What About Second Breakfast?

So what does a battle hardened squad do after accomplishing their mission?......They go back for seconds.
This has to be my favorite line to end a war movie out of those I've ever heard hehe.
this is a spoiler for Battle Los Angeles. go see it...again.

A lot of people complain about this scene, but the same thing has happened in real life combats. Especially in units that were not expecting heavy combat. Take the battle of Mogadishu... several of the convey trucks came back after a hard fight, casualties, blood in their vehicles... All they wanted to do was to go to bed... some didn't even want to go back out again... but then they heard the calls for help from the rangers... they heard the people fighting and dieing on the radio... and they just turned around getting ready to go right back out... they didn't want to sit there while they knew their friends were still out there... dieing... in this movie, the union would likely have taken the rest, the down time to sleep.. but the officers had the radio of the battles still going on, of people fighting, calling for help... where the troops could hear it... thats often enough to cause the adrenaline to start going again...

I wish they would have made Nantz more senior, at least a gunnery sergeant. Or, left him a staff sergeant, but with around 8 or 10 years in. He seems like a good Marine, a good leader with combat experience, who is still in good shape and is probably pretty well decorated, so staff sergeant isn't a very high rank to have achieved in 20 years. Always stuck out to me. I was in the army, and from what I remember many soldiers made staff sergeant in 5 or 6 years and sergeant first class (the army equivalent to gunnery sergeant) in around 10 years or so. You had to be at least a staff sergeant to do 20 years, but it was uncommon to see good soldiers not rise above that in that time. No disrespect to anyone who did retire as a sergeant or staff sergeant; I knew some good soldiers who did for various reasons. Seems like Nantz, with all his attributes, should have been at least a gunnery sergeant if not a master sergeant or first sergeant at 20 years. They could have made him a gunnery sergeant and mentioned that he turned down further promotion so he could stay with the troops and not get stuck in a more administrative job or something. Like I said though, I'm looking at it from an army perspective.

I spent 3 years on active duty with TOW platoons, got to E-4, spent 3 years break in service in the national guard made sargeant, reenlisted and was knocked down to E-2. Took about 18 months to make E-5 with the 82nd. At almost 10 years my choices were division staff, range NCO, academy/ROTC trainer, SF Medic. There were no slots above E-6 in the line companies. So I went to flight school and made warrant officer instead. When people heard I was only an E-5 with 9 years in service I had to follow up immediately with "Break in service". Otherwise they'd assume you were some kind of dirtbag. There are many forks in the highway they "encourage" you to take. You're not going to be in combat companies for 20 years.

Steven Smith After combat the parasympathetic nervous system kicks in to calm the body down after the hightened state of readiness and adrenaline rush of the sympathetic nervous system. This is the condition in which a soldier would be the most apt to die in combat, because they become utterly exhausted. This is the primary reason why no matter how small your unit is and no matter what forces you are facing, you always try to hold at least some of your troops in reserve. About 15-30 minutes after a battle is believed by your enemy to have ended is the opportune time to hit them again because most will be too exhausted to put up much of fight at that point. That is why if one side has no reserves but the other does, the side with reserves is likely to be the winner even if their numbers are far inferior. Their fresh reserve unit could turn the tide against their enemy even after the enemy believes they've won if the whole of their troops are in this exhausted state. Yes, inspiring scene, but a very stupid decision for many reasons. Morale wise it is definitely better to let them go, but that is the only logical thing about them going out again at that time. I would still order them to bring some MREs with them to consume on the flight into combat.

Every time i see ammo being loaded, im taken back to my time in army. Not sure about other armies, but i remember when i was in basic, i was putting the rounds into the mag for the first time. I was on a timer and was stuffing rounds one after another into the mag just like in this scene but as fast as i could. Seeing that, my sarge demanded "Wtf are you doing recruit" Me: "Loading rounds sergant?" Sarge: "Why the hell are you doing it so slowly?" Me: "Im literally doing this as fast as i can. How would you do it?" My sarge then grabbed a spare mag and literally started stuffing fistfulls of bullets into the mag, like 10 at a time. Literally 0 finesse. Still managed to load a 30 round mag in like 15 seconds. Humble pie duly served and eaten. Also makes me lol when i see people load bullets one at a time.

I think this is one of the few realistic scenes in the movie plenty of squads come back and they start to rest then on the radio they hear battle which would be fine but then they hear comments like we're dying out here if your able to fight you just switch on that mindset and start reloading because those guys you hear on the radio would likely do the same if roles are reversed. Funny how they get some aspects right.

Though he isn't real we have some other person that actually is more powerful than Master Chief: Chuck Norris. He would wake up to find the invasion happening and then raise his middle finger and say "fuck you." Instantly all the drones would just blow up and every other alien soldier's water would start boiling.
