“What a Tangled Web”

Sin wreaks havoc in human lives. In 2 Samuel 13, we see the ripple effects of King David’s sin extending to the next generation of his lineage. Consumed with lust, David’s son Amnon schemed to have his way with Tamar, his half sister. Alistair Begg looks at the lessons we learn from this disastrous event that devastated many lives. Although David let down his family and kingdom, his story points forward to a perfect kingdom full of sinful people whose lives have been wiped clean by Jesus.
Scripture: 2 Samuel 13:1-22
Preached: September 12, 2021

I grew up going to church and I never heard pastors preach like this. I grew up hearing a sugar-coated gospel. I don't think I have ever even heard this story before, which is on me. I appreciate Alistair's preaching of it. Praise the Lord, for truth-speaking pastors, who steward God's word. So grateful.

I am so sorry for the distress and pain you have had to deal with because of someone else's evil. You were obviously meant to hear this sermon. May you receive the loving comfort the Lord God offers to all of us. 1 Corinthians 1:3-4 "Blessed be the God and Father of our Lord Jesus Christ, the Father of sympathy and the God (Who is the Source) of every comfort, Who comforts (consoles and encourages) us in every trouble (calamity and affliction), so that we may also be able to comf ort (console and encourage) those who are in any kind of trouble or distress, with the comfort which we ourselves are comforted by God." 2 Corinthians 7:6 "But God, Who comforts and encourages and refreshes and cheers the depressed and the sinking". Remember, satan wants to destroy us (you). Draw close to God and satan will flee from you. God's love and peace be with you.

Be aware of unwise counsel from those who you call a friend That friend didn't showed himself a friend to stand in upright to counsel wisely and teach that these lustful desires and thoughts are abomination But that cheeky spirit within him, plot a plan to be a yes friend to sought unfruitful ways to get his own way that was not of God nor honourable to protect the virtue of a young lady, his sister (half/step sister) David was unwise in wisdom, naive too, not sensing his sons intent, or pretentiousness to garner attention and get sympathy Hence the rape of his daughter by his son and then the spirits of revenge, hatred, family divide and division, and even deaths preyed upon king David's household amongst the siblings.... Sad Sad sad

What grievous situation. I see a reflection between what happened to Tamar and what happened to Dinah. Consequently, what both her brothers do to the Prince who was in love with her (though it was really about acquiring Jacob's house) mirrors what Ammon did to Tamar and what Absalom did to Amnon as Dinah's brothers did to the King, his son and all his men.

It's like a movie of the life channel. It's as if after pouring out his lust upon her, everything she had suggested may happen suddenly became real. And so he hated her with a revolting hatred because he blamed her, "What have I done? Why? Why did you come? Why did you do this to me? See what you have made me do? You know what you were doing! You pretended you were not aware of my longing for you. I hate you! I utterly hate you for making me do this!" Or maybe in his perversion, he had imagined that he would "love her" and have her call out his name in deep, longing, pleasing passion and fully give herself in longing for him. But that isn't what happened... she cried... she begged him to stop... she made no sounds of passion, but possibly fought and wrestled a bit against him.
