George Michael: one of the best songwriters of the last 50 years. Definitely one of the best singers. Why he didn't get that recognition is a mystery to me. Probably too much glamor and cute faces...

Well, he's definitely gotten recognition as a singer from the public and is appreciated as a songwriter, but I feel like he's never really been recognized as an overall artist. Everything you hear on "Last Christmas" was done by George himself. He once said "I was doing something remarkable as a 20-year-old kid. I was a producer and an arranger and the idea just because I was wearing ridiculous shorts would actually stop people from noticing that". And it's true, back then MTV could help sell a lot of records, but the flip side was that there was a danger of losing musical credibility if you had bubby videos. Hall & Oates said something similiar about that topic.

He canceled the biggest producers for Careless Whisper... and then did it himself... written at the age of 18 😯... I also write songs, teach many conservatory students, but GM has just that what an unprecedented talent can do in the building of songs which become strong classics... @@aleccopile

I, being a lifelong fan of Wham! and George totally saw the incomparable talent that lay there. A huge congratulations to Andrew and George. It goes to show that the song is etched in musical history. It will always be played as a classic. I'm so happy to have heard the countdoand. It was certainly a nail biter, but worth the pins and needles that I was on until they hit number one.🎉🎉🎉

For me, it deserves its number one spot, because it's less childish and silly than the other Christmas songs! On the other hand, Andrew doesn't criticize. It's just that, like his friend George, they're a generation (myself included) who don't want to put themselves forward or make themselves proud. He takes a step back! Andrew's always had that oh-so-British sense of humor too!@@jmlecouedic

What was an excellent Christmas song back in 1984 and of course still is, albeit now more poignant 😢 RIP GM ❤ Long overdue congratulations to Wham 👏

Andrew Ridgeley is a very talented and intelligent man, contrary to how the media painted him up in the 1980s. I would love to see him record again. His only solo album (to date) Son Of Albert is fantastic, showing that he could rock out with the likes of Billy Idol, Bon Jovi, ZZ Top and T-Rex.

Great tune sung by a legendary Artist R.I.P it deserves No 1 slot

I echo your sentiments. Stopped buying records years ago and I’ve no idea who’s in the charts nowadays. I grew up in the 80s so that’s really my era for music that I listen to today. Must be a sign of the times when there’s not even a Christmas Day TOTP today which was still broadcast even after the show ended years ago.
