Wham!’s Andrew Ridgeley considers virtual show - BBC Newsnight
Andrew Ridgeley was in one of the biggest bands of the 1980s, Wham! And now a new documentary on Netflix celebrates his friendship with George Michael, who he affectionately calls Yog - and the success of the two best friends who formed the group together as teenagers.
Newsnight has talked to Andrew Ridgeley about the documentary, which features interviews from the time as well as old footage.
He tells Victoria Derbyshire about how the band coped with fame back then, about the undesirable consequences of it, the dilemma George Michael faced about his own sexuality, and about whether Andrew Ridgeley could envisage creating an ABBA-style avatar show for Wham!

We could all do with a friend like Andrew Ridgeley. What a class act. A true gentleman.
Such a dignified man who has his mates back.. the way George had his. Their rise to fame, journey and amicable parting to take their own paths was and still is a breath of fresh air. No bitterness, greed or hate. Just two lads living the best lives and looking out for each other.. the way it should be, but rarely is ❤ xx
I could listen to him for hours such an eloquent speaker
I'm glad this is a Wham! Doc, and not just George. Andrew deserves more recognition than he gets.
I think he and George are the only successful music artists I have seen that never let the media make them hate each other. George always knew he would have been nobody without Andrew and Andrew just loved his friend and seeing his continued success. That's super rare.
Lovely man. Lovely interview. They were friends who realized their goals as such an early age. But what is amazing is the friendship that endured.
He is so very sweet and soft spoken, he seems like such a genuinely kind hearted person. This was a great interview. I'm glad to see my first childhood crush is doing alright. Much love from the states!🤗💜
Andrew, you were a true friend and that type of friendship is hard to find!
So nice you could also see the pain and upset in his eye's when he speaks about his dear friend George 😢
I'm so blessed to have grown up in the 80s. I loved WHAM! then and still love them 40 years later. ❤️ My husband and I LOVED the doc and we had fun reminiscing. Thanks for the memories 🥰
what a beautiful soul... he is so elegant and kind. I feel like they were both so blessed to have each other
Love to hear about the friendship between Andrew and George! It truly was a down to earth collaborative musical match
No words can describe this man, other than an extraordinary, kind hearted gentleman
Just finished watching the Wham doc. on Netflix, Andrew Ridgley is one classy guy and was a supportive friend to George. Loved George as a solo artist and with Andrew as Wham.
This is the best interview I've seen with Andrew, such thoughtful questions.
Absolutely loved the Netflix documentary, I found myself singing along to all the Wham songs. Wham! Was really about a deep and beautiful friendship and one of the most healthy and supportive relationships among stars I've ever seen. To go from the ring leader to a cheerleader took real humility and love on Andrew's part and it shows that there would never have been a “George Michael” if there hadn’t been Andrew there giving him support and confidence along the way.
I watched Wham! today.... it brought back so many treasured memories!!!! Thanks George & Andrew for making the 80's just so much more amazing!!
What a lovely man. Back in the 80’s my sister’s adoration for wham put me off a bit. But i still find their silly 80’s tunes comforting in this batshit crazy apocalyptic world post 2019
Very emotional, just like the documentary.
True friendship and fun when they were just friends at school. What a wonderful experience they had with Wham's success
