Whack That Sensor To Find Out - Bad TPS or ECU?
Автокөліктер мен көлік құралдары
In this video I'll show you how you can diagnose problems with the throttle position sensor whether a 3 or 4 wire sensor without a wiring diagram. I'll explain what the reference voltage, Signal Voltage, ground and in the case of this LS400 IDLE Switch Voltage is and how to check them as well.

I know you're a very busy man, but I look forward for every new upload of your wisdom.
Watching a professional mechanic troubleshoot live was actually really helpful 👍
Class is in session, I'm taking notes for the test. I always enjoy stopping by the shop!

Everything is a lesson! Allways picking up tidbits
Excellent troubleshooting. I liked how you went through what also worked and moved on to checking the TPS switch.
Thank you for this video! Very interesting! If the "store" had this in stock, it must be a common failure on these cars.
Thats how you do it and that how great people share their knowledge. Stay blessed Sir
I like that you get it fixed right 😀 I would have done two things before replacing the switch and if it mostly fixed it, may have left it at that.. leading to a bad computer I guess lol First would have been cleaning the throttle body. Second would have been cleaning the contacts of the sensor and disassemble it if able for further cleaning and inspection. Then while in there I'd probably clean the maf or map, anything I might have taken apart to get the TB off for a full cleaning. Lol
Interesting i was just watching videos about power and ground side switches. Cool to see how to use logic when not having a diagram and scope in hand. Thank you sir.
I love learning new stuff like this! Keep it up.
Love that u did this live. We learned together 😃
Good to see you are back.
The last time I wacked my sensor it was sore for two or three days. Eventually everything started working well again. Seriously though great info man!

Is your sensor a "pull up design or a pull down" design? :)

@@wyattoneable does both. 😁
This was awesome. Excellent explanation. Would love to see this for other sensors, esp. 02 sensor or nox sensor for diesel.
Excellent diagnostic tutorial! Thank you!
You are a God because you know what you didn't even know I had this problem at the moment of trying to identify without that diagnostic tool that you were talking about but yes thank you so much I do have a multimeter
very good explanation , thanks and good timing for me because I am trying to diagnose a problem with my 2000 mazda .
Thank you! Great explanation.
Great tip with the screwdriver mimicing the bumps and vibrations of the road and engine. For the adjusting of the TPS, how does that work? Is there just an allowable tolerance spec you put it in and mount it?? 🤔
I had a 91 Camaro 3.1 L engine that puked the TPS sensor at 93K miles and it had all the symptoms with erratic idle and was easily validated. Also, given the amount of miles on the odometer, it is very common that a good many vehicles for the mileage of 90K miles or better for the TPS to fail. Also, knowing that my Mom had the ECU replaced by the dealer already for another problem all together previously. Upon replacing the TPS sensor, I also took the liberty of cleaning the IAC Valve pintle and also inside the IAC port housing for good measure! I also did cleaning of the internal throttle valve body and the mass airflow sensor as a scheduled service!
Excellent talk through thanks
Great stuff !
Hi . Great as usual Can you please explain how to test the 7 pin MAF that came in kia sephia 94 1.6 L AT please ?
Amazing video !
Nice work
I have 1989 Ford F250 with a 351ci 5.8L V8 and because my scan tool doesn't work on OBD and OBD 1 systems. I pulled the code with the blinking check engine light. and got a 53 code and came up with TPS circuit above maximum 4.5 volts. but I'm not sure what the parameters are supposed to be for that particular TPS. or if it's something in the circuit that is out of range.
Good stuff man!!
Good show
Thanks for sharing
Super helpful
Great video! What would cause a 1988 F150 300 six manual shift to jerk and surge when letting off the gas peddle. New TPS , ICV , wires, cap and rotor. Runs and idles great. Thanks Larry
Thank you!!!
sir thank you . please make a tutorial again about the wiring diagram about input and and out of the ecu.
Thanks 🙏
Ty for this 4 wire vid, i think the 12v wire on my hiace is faulty. its not changing when i open the throttle, just stays on 12v. might throw a new tps at it :)
Perfect vudeo!
Damn u good bro wel done
Now, how do you properly calibrate it's position to the throttle plate? IAC, RPM, Voltages, Variations? How's the Cali weather these days?
Hello bro, please is there any way you can check for power and ground side of ECU without a wiring diagram? please let me know and I will appreciate it.thank you
Wait a minute. let me get this straight. You want us, all of us, to whack our sensors?
Okay now I'm commenting while I'm watching I have way more wires to my throttle position sensor
I have a '98, so filing all these potential problems away just in case. 25 yrs. and so far, so good.
I'd be interested in seeing a teardown showing the failure mode of the sensor. I'm gonna guess that it's corrosion caused by water ingress, but I've been surprised before. Could just be a mechanical failure I suppose. That said, it worked out for you this time, but back-probing will bite you in the ass one day. One day you're gonna waste a bunch of time over a poor back-probed connection. I'd go straight to Pomona piercing probes.

It's not water, the issue is heat so the plastic inside get damaged. Lexus gs300 mk2 98-05, has absolutely the same tps drama...
So to fix your problem don't let that guy bang on the switch with a screwdriver anymore 🤣
yeah 90's lexus and toyota ecus have leaking capacitors problems
👍👍
what happens if i accidentally check the others for continuity to ground?😢
My idle switch is always at 11v, stuck there. I put a new tps and its still like that. any ideas?
My 05 Pontiac Grand Prix GTP is fly by wire and has 17 pins. Not a big fan of fly by wire.
what causes of i've got ground over 100
LS 4 hunnid
😀😃
Lexus cars break?
That is weird. I don't understand how an off and on switch can give intermediate voltages.

Only paid $55,000 for the vehicle - been running good for the past 6 years - why would I want to spend $65 for a new TPS just because the check engine light illuminates - I mean HEY, it only does it periodically 😐😏😳
In the end it's a bad car
