this man is a chicago icon. i can remember him being on tv since forever.
There were 2 great Chicago news anchors I remember while growing up in the 50's and 60's. Fahey Flynn and John Drury. They both knew Chicago and served the people well.
John Drury worked at a time three Chicago stations (WBBM, WLS, WGN). R.I.P. John.
As a boy in the 1960s in Gary, Indiana, I would sometimes stay up late and watch the 10:00 PM news on WGN (years before it became a superstation). He was the first TV news anchorman I ever knew.
I grew up watching John on channels 2,7 & 9. He was a wonderful reporter with a great sense of humor. he will be truely missed. God bless you John.
I was born a week before Drury retired from WLS-TV.. Got a bit his voice before Ron Magers stepped in. It's been 10 years already. Continue to rest John.
"Memories,I'm 56 this year, and I can remember as a young child Mr. Drury back when it was announced how do you do ladies and gentelmen I'm Fahey flynn, and I'm john Drury!" wbbm 2 news in the 60's black and white T.V.!' We've come along way from a Teletype.

By today's "news" standards we have regressed. Woefully.
I watched both Jack Taylor and John Drury as a small child! Can you imagine kids today watching the news. But I must admit that I had a crush on John Drury. And I was in kindergarten, first grade! I loved the way his hair sweeper. But I grew up listening to real reporters. Not the sad and hate filled bias no news of today.
When I was in college, my class visited WGN studios just before his 9 pm newscast was about to start. Despite the flurry of activity, he walked in cool as a cucumber, took his anchor chair, and stopped to greet us warmly. He was very kind and encouraging.
Thank you, John Drury.
Who misses Robert Jordan now?
