WGN Channel 9 - Family Classics With Frazier Thomas - "Boys Town" (Opening, 1981)

Ойын-сауық

Here is the opening for the Family Classics with Frazier Thomas presentation of "Boys Town" on WGN Channel 9. Includes:
WGN Bumper promo for the premiere of The Incredible Hulk, which started on Monday, December 21st 1981. Also features the WGN Circle-9 Logo, which had been introduced earlier in the year. Voiceover by Floyd Brown. Kind of funny that the promo is for The Incredible Hulk, while the WGN logo uses the Superman theme.
Opening of Family Classics with Frazier Thomas. Features the older-style logo for Family Classics. Gotta love that opening music!
The Family Classics theme song was called "Moviescope" and was a piece of library music composed by Dennis Berry. It was originally released on the Berry/Conroy label.
This aired on local Chicago TV on Sunday, December 13th 1981 at 3:30pm.
About The Museum of Classic Chicago Television:
The Museum of Classic Chicago Television's primary mission is the preservation and display of off-air, early home videotape recordings (70s and early 80s, primarily) recorded off of any and all Chicago TV channels; footage which would likely be lost if not sought out and preserved digitally. Even though (mostly) short clips are displayed here, we preserve the entire broadcasts in our archives - the complete programs with breaks (or however much is present on the tape), for historical purposes. For information on how to help in our mission, to donate or lend tapes to be converted to DVD, and to view more of the 4,600+ (and counting) video clips available for viewing in our online archive, please visit us at:

I was born in 1952 and grew up with Frazier Thomas, Garfield Goose, and of course, "Family Classics", and all I can say is that I miss it all.

Plus, in the Chicago area, Ray Rayner, Cuddly Duddly and Chelveston the duck sent us off to school every morning.

It's late Sunday afternoon, snowing outside, mom is in the kitchen and the smell of dinner fills the air. Dad is sitting on his favorite chair reading the Chicago times, us kids huddled on the floor with our favorite blankets and pillows. The music starts.....ahhh the movie you have been waiting for all year is finally on!

That music DOES bring you back! We always had to watch Jules Verne's Mysterious Island every time they showed it. :)

"So now... if you're quite ready, let us begin." I wonder how many times over the years did I hear Frazier Thomas introduce the weekly Family Classics movie that way. Dozens and dozens of Sunday late afternoons spent watching this great show though the 1960's for me, mostly.

My grand parents lived on the corner of Grace Street and Campbell - kitty corner to the WGN studios. My older brother and I would walk over to WGN and try to look into the windows when visiting them on Sunday afternoons. We hoped to see Frazier Thomas! Who knew these Family Classic openings were prerecorded? :)

When I see this, and hear that theme music, it brings back wonderful memories of my mom making Sunday dinners. My favorite was roast beef and roasted potatoes. I just remember how nice the house smelled.

Today if there's a 'hosted' movie it's some thirty-somethings cooking and sipping wine between segments of the film. Blech.

What used to be located a few miles west of Omaha is now surrounded by lots of West Omaha development. First National Business Park, Rose Blumkin Jewish Home, Trendwood neighborhood and Millard North High School (I graduated there in '92) are what's along B.T.'s boundaries. A similar made-for-TV movie, "Miracle of the Heart" (1986) was filmed throughout its entirety at Boys Town.

A 1995 tv movie called THE ROAD HOME (aka BROTHERS' DESTINY), about two orphans making their way to Boys Town, was another sequel of sorts, featuring Mickey Rooney in the role of Father Flanagan.
