WGN Channel 9 - Family Classics - "The Mark Of Zorro" (Opening, 1985)

Ойын-сауық

Here is the (mostly complete) opening to the Family Classics presentation of "The Mark of Zorro" on WGN Channel 9.
Featuring Joseph T. Loughlin, Vice-President and General Manager of WGN-TV, as host. This was the first episode of Family Classics that aired after the death of Frazier Thomas, who passed away on Wednesday, April 3rd 1985. Mr. Loughlin says a few words about Frazier and the future of Family Classics.
There was a transitional period before Roy Leonard took over hosting duties for this show on October 13th 1985, beginning with the airing of "For the Love of Benji".
(this clip did not originate with me, it was traded around quite a bit in the pre-digital days, which accounts for its poor quality. Even though it's not quite up to snuff with the FuzzyStandards, I thought I would include it here for the historical significance.)
The Family Classics theme song was called "Moviescope" and was a piece of library music composed by Dennis Berry. It was originally released on the Berry/Conroy label.
"Perhaps at sometime in the future, the program will have another host..."
This aired on local Chicago TV on Sunday, April 7th 1985.
About The Museum of Classic Chicago Television:
The Museum of Classic Chicago Television's primary mission is the preservation and display of off-air, early home videotape recordings (70s and early 80s, primarily) recorded off of any and all Chicago TV channels; footage which would likely be lost if not sought out and preserved digitally. Even though (mostly) short clips are displayed here, we preserve the entire broadcasts in our archives - the complete programs with breaks (or however much is present on the tape), for historical purposes. For information on how to help in our mission, to donate or lend tapes to be converted to DVD, and to view more of the 4,700+ (and counting) video clips available for viewing in our online archive, please visit us at:

Truly makes me want to cry. 37 years ago and it still touched me. Childhood in Chicago. What great memories this show brings. Sundays, family, good meals and good lord, that song forever etched in my brain. That music will always haunt my memories.

Loved Frazier Thomas. My mother and I enjoyed Family Classics, and I also watched Frazier on Garfield Goose when I was growing up. I never tired of him. A great man who served the hearts of many.

A sad day indeed when Frazier died... a true humanitarian and he also had one of the best HO train layouts I have ever seen

Now this is a premium example of class. To address the fact that Frazier had passed away instead of just putting a new host in place without saying anything. Very touching. I also like that Mr. Loughlin told the audience that Frazier Thomas himself would choose the movies and edit them. I read somewhere that there was some apprehension on the part of producer of a movie about it being edited to fit the format of television. Frazier Thomas assured the producer that he loved movies very much and would not butcher it. In the end, the producer was so impressed with Frazier's edits, he told him anytime WGN wanted to air one of his films, it would be fine as long as Frazier himself did the editing. I may not have the details completely but that was the gist of the what the book mentioned. If you think editing doesn't make much difference, just look at the way some of these shows from the 60's through the 80's end up being horribly chopped and diced to the point where its completely obvious. Just shows that Frazier Thomas was a true man of character.

One of Frazier's famous line before the movie starts, he would say "And now, whenever you're ready, let's begin!"

Of course, later on, Roy Leonard took over and continued the tradition that was started by Frazier.

What a lovely statement he made. Oh for a time when television was so genteel.

They even forgot to take a volume off the "Family Classics" shelf, proving how irreplaceable Frazier was.
