WFLD Channel 32 - Strawberry Shortcake - "In Big Apple City" (Complete Broadcast, 10/25/1984) 📺 🍓

Ойын-сауық

Here's a mostly complete broadcast (with the first few seconds or so missing) of an episode of the Strawberry Shortcake series (? - was it a series? I thought these were specials), "Strawberry Shortcake in Big Apple City" (S01E02, originally aired on January 23rd 1981?) as broadcast over WFLD Channel 32 (or, as was firmly known by this time, "Metromedia 32").
In this installment, Strawberry Shortcake travels to Big Apple City to compete with the Peculiar Purple Pieman of Porcupine Peak in a televised bakeoff (description per IMDb).
(TECHNICAL NOTE: Every now and then, the reception gets a tad wonky and the color dissolves into little artifacts, in a manner of the "chroma" being killed off or activated upon showing of, say, a black-and-white TV show or movie - ah, the joys of viewing by "rabbit ears" or other antennae.)
Includes:
Opening (joined in progress) with writing and producing credits
Commercials for:
Grams Bear, Baby Hugs Bear and Baby Tugs Bear (of Care Bears line) - from Kenner
Kellogg's Raisin Bran (with boy on bike and showing cycling competition)
Stomper Water Demon four-wheel drive - from Schaper (each comes with its own Duracell battery, you know)
Episode Act I
Commercials for:
Rose-Petal Place - from Kenner (first variant) (Some assembly required, each - including the dolls - sold separately)
Care Bears and Professor Coldheart - from Kenner
Dream Dancer (with music sounding like "Flashdance - What a Feeling") - from Tomy
Cookie-Crisp cereal (with wizard Cookie Jarvis and kids camping outside home)
Episode Act II
Commercials for:
Rose-Petal Place - from Kenner (second variant)
Play-Doh Doodler
Trix cereal (with Trix rabbit impersonating newsboy; followed by tie-in with Rose Petal Place in specially marked boxes)
PSA for Easter Seals Safe Halloween coupons (books available at Denny's Restaurants - ending voiceover by Jim Barton)
Episode Act III
Commercials for:
Wicket W. Warwick and Princess Kneesaa of "Return of the Jedi" - from Kenner (each sold separately)
Bristle Buddies (a variant of Lego) from Playskool
PSA for Train-X (dealing with children's bedwetting problems) (voiceover by Jim Barton) (posted separately here: • Train-X (Commercial, 1... )
Sponsor billboard for Kenner
Ending credits (reception begins to weaken by the end)
Tom and Jerry as part of Afternoon Fun starts just about at the point the recording ends
This aired on local Chicago TV on Thursday, October 25th 1984 during the 3:00pm to 3:30pm timeframe.

I'm glad to hear this. I'm a girl who grew up loving SSC (and I still do), and I get so tired of people (mostly boys, I noticed) putting it down for being "too girly" and "lame." Nice to see there are boys who enjoyed the show.

This is the cutest friggin thing I ever seen. I was a 90s baby so I don't remember these episodes, but my cousin who was about 10 years older than me handed down lots of Strawberry shortcake toys to me when I was little. Never knew these little episodes were out here for me to see.

This special was aired on WPIX-TV (channel 11) in 1981, and this was 40 years before a new animated series called “Strawberry Shortcake: Berry in Big City” is now on KZread, and Strawberry Shortcake was given a decent new look if you haven’t seen it, and the city is completely different than this one. This special was also released on VHS by Family Home Entertainment in 1982 and it has been re-released on home video over the years. It was also released on DVD by Paramount in 2015 along with “The World of Strawberry Shortcake” as a “Double Feature” release. The soundtrack album was released on Kid Stuff Records in 1981 which contains the entire special as heard here.

I believe that this aired right after Mr. Magoo's Christmas Carol on WPIX In December, 1981. After this aired, then the 7:30 Action News with Pat Harper and Steve Bosh aired.

@@patriciadarby421 That was a month after Strawberry Shortcake came to the Macy’s Thanksgiving Day Parade in November 1981 where she came to NYC after this special aired. The first airing was from April 10th, and then reran around Christmas time 1981 which was after “Mr. Magoo’s Christmas Carol” was aired.

I found a pic from a NYC edition of TV Guide in the TV listings that “Strawberry Shortcake in Big Apple City” was aired at 6:30PM Wednesday evening on WPIX-TV (channel 11) right after reruns of “Happy Days” as “Happy Days Again” at 6PM. Thanks to Paul Saur for that find. The date for this special was October 14th 1981.

And right about 7:36, this part was cut out, the only part missing is where Strawberry Shortcake left the hotel and cry as the cars passing by and staring at the street sign where she says “Big 5 Avenue” and the traffic light goes green and right where she’s heading to Sentimental Park. That’s why this part was chopped out where it was edited for TV. If you want to see this version uncut, watch the original uncut version on KZread.

There was no logo at the end if you go to 29:30. I wonder if this special would have the WildBrain logo on there, because WildBrain is the company that owns this and the other five original “Strawberry Shortcake” TV specials along with the 2003 series called “Strawberry Shortcake” and the 2009 series “Strawberry Shortcake’s Berry Bitty Adventures”. In addition, WildBrain also owns “Arthur” and “Caillou”. The only one missing at the very beginning is the Kenner sponsor tag with the announcer saying “This ‘Strawberry Shortcake’ special is brought to you by the many worlds of Kenner toys”, and the first five seconds of the opening scene where the talking sun would say “Welcome to another day in the life of Strawberry Shortcake” and cuts right into the house where he says “And what a day!” and that’s where it starts right at 0:00 since the first five seconds of the opening is missing. There was also the part at 7:36 where it was edited out from this airing where Strawberry Shortcake was crying after she left the hotel where the cars drove by and she looks at the sign that says “Big 5 Avenue” and then continued to cry until she reached Sentimental Park. That part was cut out from the original airing.
