I'm a huge fan of Portacio's Wetworks comics. Awesome story & art imo. The original Wildcats series I'm of the same mind. At the time was a great alternative to the big two. Artistically was untouchable like most of the early Image stuff. Yes I'm old. 👍
“Blood bukake”. Now the Name of my next book. Seriously.
I always figured that "all the things that went into Wetworks" ad was a reference to the cover of Asterix and Cleopatra, which had the same joke.

That's the first thing I thought of!
I had an ashcan preview from Hero magazine. The art was black & white and I could not stop looking at it. Glorious.
I think you guys are thinking of Arnold's character named Dutch in Predator when you guys were talking about Dane

"Dutch", another back half, consonant name that sounds badass.

Damn near spit out my drink when he said that 🤣
The book hadn't come out and Wizard Magazine on their price guide kept pumping it up in price like it existed... they did it for several months.
God, I loved Wetworks. Jackson Dane. Arnold played Dutch in Predator.
10:08 I'm still wondering how Scott allowed that six fingered hand to slip through on panel 05. Nonetheless, I absolutely loved this issue! It felt like a major summer blockbuster event for all of us Image fans
If Ah-Nuld had the T-1,000 powers, he’d be forming mallets and battle-axes instead of swords and crowbars
I think if there's one part of the modern, parasocial era of being a creator that is fantastic, it's that fans are more aware of the countless factors that play into whether or not a project comes out as scheduled. Snyderverse fans are traditionally pretty fuckin intense & they were super supportive when the tragic situation with Autumn Snyder happened. Back in the day? Literally nobody cared what you were going through.
I remember the first time I discovered Wetworks (think I was just browsing through a collection of Jim Lee's Image line), I couldn't put it down. I think the fact that they're black ops monster hunters with symbiotic suits that give them all unique powers is what hooked me the most
Legion of Night
is there any more of a 90s kid comment than when Ed says "I think I have the pog of that" drawing.... haha :)
As a child, it was one Wetworks book that whet my appetite and got me excited for something the series ended up not being, and that was the Wetworks Sourcebook. What that book promised, using elaborately detailed pinups - captioned of course with copious amounts of tech and military jargon - was a rich, fully-realized world and history, while nothing of the sort materialized in the series proper. The fact that, for various reasons, the issues ended up actually being far more rushed than other Image titles of the time, containing intermittent background art at first, later seemingly none at all, and even less story, was a disappointment. One other point: Ed, what you said about vampires was only partially true at that time. The Blade movie hadn't yet been released, but the tabletop RPG Vampire: The Masquerade was huge, as was all of that game's ephemera. You also had things like the TV show Forever Knight, the Coppola Dracula film, and the Buffy movie. Vampires were BIG for a lot of us at that time, because occurring simultaneously with the explosion of the Anne Rice stuff was a total reinvention of vampires by the media. Vampires became a society with its own politics, and you would fantasize that maybe you could join that society. That was a huge part of what made the idea of Wetworks so appealing, because along with all of that, you were getting a bunch of badass PMC dudes inspired by Predator. It was a perfect recipe that never got fully cooked.
I hope you can feature Nick Manabat's Cybernary.
Arnold's character in Predator is "Dutch"
Great stuff! Loved this episode!
Ahh, WetWorks. That’s the real stuff, man.
What a great video! I remember going to sdcc with my dad and he bought it right when it came out! I’ve got that first issue and look at it from time to time. Obsessed with the artwork.
I lusted over the ad for this comic for ages...based on the awesome art ...Also 'wetwork' was a code for assassination in Russian spy language back in the cold war.: I found that out cause the name of this book stuck with me over the years...I'm sorry to say the book looks a bit muddy to me now...but it's still great
Make the squad from Predator shiny.
This is crazy! I was watching your last video and was just going to ask if you guys could do a video about Portacio in the future!looks like I didn't have to wait very long.
There was a “art of homage studious “ Early image comics stuff With some early J Scott I want to say it was a result of that homage talent search But it also had lee, Silvestri , Portacio, Williams I have it somewhere

I bought that book in a dollar bin and it’s still a regular reader for me
I found that wetwork in like 5th grade in the dollar store along with a few young blood strike force books for like a quarter each lmao
Dutch was Arnold’s name!
oh man!!! The first time I used yellow & sky blue colored pencils to simulate chrome text I almost lost it 😂 love you KAYFABE
could you guys do some more vids about the evolution of coloring in comics? theres not that much out there and since everything is digital now theres even less on the old ways. love your channel you guys are over with me brother!
🔥🔥🔥🔥🔥🔥
❤❤❤❤❤
@19:46 Richard Corben DOES NOT approve!
You guys have to stop so I can get some work done!
I like Willce art, but not wetworks some characters look the same and was hard to know who is who😢
The gimmick of the Wetworks ad was in high probability inspired by one cover of Asterix & Cleopatra. You can see it here: en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Asterix_and_Cleopatra
