Wet Exit Without Using the Spray Deck Grab Loop
While not common, there are situations where we won't be able to use the grab loop on our spray skirt to release it.
This could be due to a mistake or not paying attention and the loop gets caught under the deck when it's put on (I have seen this rushing to get off a beach or in conditions and after a rescue). It could be something on the deck that gets in the way of it or we simply can't find or reach it.
What happens then?
If the loop is not accessible, the next option is pulling the skirt off at the hip. Rather than trying to pull at the skirt with your fingers - tough with a tight deck or with thick gloves, I recommend pressing your palm down on the skirt just inside the coaming and sliding it away from you. Your palm will 'grab' the material and bunch it allowing you to pull it free to get your fingers around the edge.
There are other methods - like using your knee to release the skirt - but they won't always work. With my skirt on 4 of my 5 primary kayaks, I cannot remove the skirt with my knee.
Once you have the skirt free, continue to release it from around your hip.

Good, clear demo, very important safety reminder and efficiently presented!

Thank you. I need to get back to making a few more of these.
I had to do this once! Got absolutely demolished while surfing and had no idea where the grab loop was. The method I learned was similar to what you did but from the middle…just make a fold and pull. The grab a fold trick could save your life!
Absolutely indispensable knowledge! Thank you. I, too, am one of Joey Schott’s crew! That Petrel Play is beautiful.
Works better than a knee!

@@WhitewaterOutdoors Yes, it does... And especially if you have a really tight bungee or rand style skirt
With a *VERY* close fitting (as in, Impossible to fit on in sub freezing Wx) ocean (nearly round) sprayskirt/spraydeck, the method is a bit different. Still with the paddle gripped (under thumb of one hand, in line with the kayak), put both hands right behind your hips (at about the aft end of the coaming), and *RIP* yourself forward in an adrenaline-induced Tuck'n'Roll out of the cockpit. Works like a charm.

I never even realized the loop could get stuck under there. Good to know, something to watch for.
I like the spray skirts with the extra strap across the center. Also, I've been able to pop off the spray skirt with my knee.

I have spray skirts with the strap across and on two of my kayaks it is not able to release the skirt, nor am I able to do it with my knee. It's definitely an option and works well on many kayaks, just not something I recommend is a primary method since it's not guaranteed.
I am lucky enough to be able to just pop out. As my first two capsizes were when I was in the very beginning of learning how to do the very basic manoeuvres, were I ended upside down and I just simply popped out as my weight over comes the grabbing strength of the spray deck bungy cord. It is the fastest way for me to wet exit even now that I have lost some weight. When doing capsizing in a Pool I have to hold myself in to the boat so that I can do what need to be done properly. I will try this on my next pool session as I am only just starting to learn how to roll. so I will give this ago.
I've never tried it but was told that just coming out of your kayak will pull the skirt off without any assistance. I suppose depending on how tight it is.

In a typical sea kayak, if using a neoprene skirt that is properly fitted, you don't come out unless you release the skirt. even if I relax, I'd hang there. Neoprene skirts are designed not to imploded in waves and surf - so they likewise work to keep you inside. A Nylon skirt on a rotomold kayak will likely pop off, but I prefer to teach as if using a neoprene skirt on a composite boat as people tend to upgrade at some point.
Nice demo Robert. I know not every skirt has a cross strap like yours, but could you also just pull that to release the skirt?

Absolutely. It works well on a rotomold kayak and I'd fully trust it but if the skirt is a really snug fit on a composite boat, it doesn't always release easily. Since I teach 'hand to hip' to orient yourself underwater, to trace the combing to find the loop, and to push off to exit forward, sticking with the hip as a reference point makes sense....and I know it will work every time.

I like this. Nice to have a backup plan in case the loop isn’t accessible for whatever reason. I’m going to try this the next time I’m on the water!
