I am so happy when you do a 2nd or 3rd video. I had to dig way into the archives, and didn’t mind, but what I am finding is each book has its own “challenges” and I pick up something new with every video. Thank you 🙏

Thanks, Taqi, I am glad to hear that's the case because they seem like a rehash of that same old stuff to me! However people continue to ask me for more of the same videos and rather than point them to an old one, I just keep making new ones. Its not much of an effort because I am doing the work anyway and I film most of it for my own records. I just have to edit and post a video. I have something like 225 videos of book cleanings in my archives that I've never posted, but most of them are very boring with no dialogue and crappy lighting. I think your observation is spot-on, every book presents its own challenge and learning as much as you can before diving in is very helpful!

Last question: why did you choose to use Di water to treat the curled corner instead of local steam with a hand steamer? Wouldn’t the heat help relax the fibers?

DI water is more easily directed where you want it to go and also doesn't warm the book, which is counterproductive because it can make a book look more planar than it really will be.

Loving the immacuclean so far. Have 6 books drying right now lol

Hi Rick. When I’m pressing a modern book that has the digital sticker, I insert a sheet of 110 pound bond on either side of that page so the sticker doesn’t heat press into the page in front of it nor the page behind it. I’ve seen some pretty dramatic errors by people making this mistake because they use too much pressure in their press. Just a technique that I use

Also a sheet of 60-90lb card stock on both sides of the page with the sticker and it will not press through.

When you press a modern Marvel book, Joe do you avoid pressing the digital code causing an indentation in the pages around it?

Well see this video, that's now I do it! I lower the pressure and temperature and lengthen the duration of the press as in this video. I also use a chamfered pressing board inside the front cover, above and below the book. Other place heavy paper on either side fo that page (see larry's comment below) and that works too!

Besides temp and time in press what would you change for a non modern book (say 70s to 90s books)? Might make for e good video

pressure is a big one. I am in the early stages of developing a device to measure the pressure in a comic book press!

After the book has been pressed and returns to ambient temperature, is it better to leave the boards in book during cold pressing? Is it possible to remove the boards and then the cold press?

its definitely possible to leave them in, the book tends to look more "natural" if you removed them, however. :-)

Hi Rick. How long do you pre-heat your books before cleaning? It looks like you set it to 125 degrees. Do you feel your time/temperature setting works the same across all golden/silver/bronze books?

Hi Bill, I don’t really track it closely but I know from Measurements it takes about 3 minutes for the book the preheat through the middle so I typically leave them in for about 4 minutesS

Sorry for so many questions: this video is so informative. I ordered one of your cold pressing boards today. I noticed in the video you pressed and then transferred under the cold press board. I currently leave books for 24 hours then pull them out to prevent reversion. My plan was to move to 12 hours then put it under your cold board for 12 hours. Can I actually press way more books and drop them under cold boards quickly like your video for all books or is it just possible for modern? I.e how many can I actually do in a day with a cold press board

getting books out of your hot press is the key ro productivity and they don't need to be there once they returned to ambient temperature.

@@ImmaculateComics thanks! People seem to swear on forums that the 60 second transfer from heat press to cold press is enough to kill tension and encourage reversion long term. Glad to hear that’s not your experience since I need to be more productive

@@toasty-toast That is definitely not my experience. I've pressed over 10,000 books and my experience says that is false.

I have aluminum plates but do not pre heat the bottom, am I losing out on “pressing potential”?

getting the entire book to the same temperature is important and that happens much faster if you preheat the bottom of the book, It also doesn't drive moisture and gases out the bottom of the book from the top.

Hi! At what point do you throw away your silicon sheets? I just ordered the thick one off you store. I noticed you have wrinkles on your silicon sheets isn’t that a sign to toss them?

yeah I probably should throw those out but I was too lazy to cut some more for the sake of the video and it was only wrinkled outside the borders of the book so I knew it wouldn't make a difference

@@ImmaculateComics that's awesome. I have been using some silicon coated parchment (the cheapest on on Amazon.ca) but they get wrinkled and I throw them away after each press. Looking forward to trying your sheets!
