I am an ELCA Lutheran from South Carolina. I play the piano and organ. Today (November 4, All Saints' Sunday), we sang this as our Hymn of the Day. I filled in at a local Lutheran Church today and played it as the Opening Hymn. It is #632 in Evangelical Lutheran Worship. And let us give thanks to those who have gone before us.

I have sung this song for decades now. But I never noticed a phrase that occurs in the first and last stanzas: "and our eternal home." In the first stanza, we ask God to be our help, our hope and our shelter. In the last stanza, we ask God to be our help, our hope and our guard. Both stanzas end with us asking Him to be our eternal home. I confess, I usually think of heaven in terms of a location. And while biblically, Heaven is a real place, the thing that makes it so appealing is that our Father is there. Being away from a sinful world and in a new place of perfection should not be the goal of my life. Rather being with my Father, who loved me so much that he gave Jesus as a sacrifice so that I could be right with Him--THAT is the goal of my life. HE is what makes it heaven!

And because the uncreated God is there to sustain and provide, He is our energy and light and being. We can only dimly imagine what Heaven will be like, but as Paul says, we will put off mortality and put on immortality and see clearly, see face to face.

What a powerful hymn that reminds us of our days on earth and the life eternal. The lyrics and the music that had flown through this composer are definitely inspired by God. What a great experience for the composer. As we sing, we feel the presence of God and the Holy Spirit and I am sure that this hymn lives till the second coming of Jesus Christ

O God, our help in ages past, Our hope for years to come, Our shelter from the stormy blast, And our eternal home. 2 Under the shadow of Thy throne Thy saints have dwelt secure; Sufficient is Thine arm alone, And our defence is sure. 3 Before the hills in order stood, Or earth received her frame, From everlasting Thou art God, To endless years the same. 4 A thousand ages in Thy sight Are like an evening gone; Short as the watch that ends the night Before the rising sun. 5 Time, like an ever-rolling stream, Bears all its sons away; They fly forgotten, as a dream Dies at the opening day. 6 O God, our help in ages past, Our hope for years to come, Be Thou our guard while life shall last, And our eternal home.

If you listen often enough with pencil, and score paper in hand, you should be able to take it down by ear. These things are rarely published. Church organists most often compose them as part of the job. Better yet, try writing one of our own. Delving your inner ear, makes music all the more ,meaningful and enjoyable.

Thank you HH. Pencil and paper is exactly what we did. Had our choir sing it (with a slight variation) at my father's funeral 2 years ago. The variation came in that while we had several outstanding soprano's we did not have a young boy's choir to duplicate it exactly. Nonetheless, it was grand.

Ah, finally the fixed version! Thank you very much, notyobs.
Thank you for the glitch-free version. As a chorister when I was younger this was my favourite hymn at our remembrance service. This version, if I recall, was at Westminster after the 9-11 attack? Again, thank you.

Do not let your hearts be troubled. Trust in God, trust also in me. - Jesus (John 14:1)
Great version. I wonder if this will be the closest that I'll get to Westminster Abbey? Keep up the posts! (From upstate NY, USA)
Oh Praise The Lord. Great God JEHOVAH GOD
Blessed be the name of the Lord
I am an ELCA Lutheran from South Carolina. I play the piano and organ. Today (November 3, All Saints' Sunday), we sang this as the Closing Hymn. It is #632 in Evangelical Lutheran Worship. And let us give thanks for the ones who have gone before us.
God will continue to be help in age to come
Amen.

making this Sunday music on my facebook page, suntreeriver design... it's the appointed psalm for today in the Revised Common Lectionary.
Does anyone know what descant (composer) is used here. And even better, where can I get a copy? Thanks for any help.

Nonetheless, it was grand.
we sang this in our school assembly everyday.
From what is this taken from? I would like to see the full video.
Is it right that at the end of this wonderful hymn, the choir starts a "Kyrie" from Taizé? (a kyrie written by Jacques Berthier, who wrote a lot of music for the Taizé Community) notyobs, do you have the complete kyrie?
Can anyone tell me what Kyrie is used at the end?

Sounds like a Taize chant Kyrie.
I hope this is sung when the last trumpet sounds.
This shit gave me chills. The only reason why I go to a church is because of the hymns. I’m an atheist.
Hear our prayer Oh Almighty God in these troubled times of encroaching darkness!
Why you are not uploading videos 😔😔🥺🥺🥺🥺😰😔🥺
Australian navy memories.....
Today 8th October 2023, Israel declared war on its neighbours. The implications are indeed enormous. We may all be singing this magnificent hymn in earnest in the near future.

Beautifull song, but our 'God' his frame is Mother-love....
Written by Isaac Watts
our school song..Christ church school..
Too bad they did not sing all the verses. Most poignant is what is usually the 5th verse: "Time like an ever rolling steam, bears all its sons away, they lie forgotten as a dream, lies at the opening dawn."
Is it a catholic church
