    It would be great if Westinghouse could come out with an upgraded Automatic Transfer Switch that could work with the 50 Amp 240 VAC Output, for more backup power capability on more circuits in the home. That would be the next best thing to having a Generac unit - at a fraction of the cost.

    @@HomesteadEngineering The only issue with doing it that way would be that you'd need to make sure the utility cable that signals the power outage isn't going to receive any power from the generator itself otherwise it wouldn't be able to differentiate power from the grid (restored) vs power from the generator itself. So the generator would kick on, return power to the utility cable, the ST switch would assume power was restored and kill the generator again. The process would continuously repeat itself until the utility cable is unplugged. I was considering using this as a solution but I don't see any way around it.

    First time ever that a youtube comment section was worth reading! Here's my situation: We're at the end of the road, to so speak, and last to have power restored (can be 2 weeks), and last weekend was 48 hrs... in september. It's a vacation/weekend cabin, but one where we want to keep food in the fridge, have a wood stove, don't mind some inconvenience. 250gal propane I'd leave permanently connected. Recent quote for the mid-range of generacs was 16k installed. Not happening, and overkill when most of the time we won't be there- minimal version of 1-2kW, or maximal version of 8kW. So we're managing to three situations 1) not home, may not be there for days, want enough power to keep the fridge on and probably the DSL router so we can monitor. 2) home, running fridge, electric starters on propane stove and water heater, DSL and maybe a couple LEDs - def still under 20A 3) home, running more stuff. My thinking is put the ST unit in the kitchen, hook up the minimal setup and drill some holes in the side of the house to run power/control. This solves 1 as an auto start, low load (my calc is 24 days of run time at 25% load?). For #2, as an interim and fast solution if the powers out and we show up, pre-run a few extension cords so the water heater's controls and a power strip for lighting, etc are manually plugged in when needed (or we just leave it all in). For #3, install a manual transfer switch and dedicated panel for a few circuits, and then manually change the plug at the generator/disconnecting the ST and connecting a MTS - then it's more like a whole house, but manually dealt with when we show up, with more capacity than the ST unit... and use the remote start/stop to conserve fuel when we are on site vs running all the time. Total cost of maybe 1300 and a couple perimeter holes sealed (shhhh) for 1 & 2, and another 500-1000 to make #3 happen. Though maybe a few hundred more as I'd have to put a small roof up to keep snow from being an issue. Thoughts? It's an inexpensive but functional backup, with a more advanced whole-house possible too.

    Maybe a dumb question - if there's utility power, but the control wire and L14-30 are not plugged in, will any devices plugged into the outlets still work? Reasoning being in situation 3 i'd probably have the power coming through the MTS from the generator, and would unplug those two things.

    brarrr, I think I would have to see it and chat with you for a while to really understand what your trying to accomplish. What you describe may work. I would definitely not do the whole house Generac. I might also look at a solar generator with panels like the EcoFlow Delta Pro. I would also have a video surveillance system hooked to the internet with one of the cameras focused on the EchoFlow screen so you know the exact state of the system at all times (same for the generator is you go that way). If the video goes down, you know the power is out.

    @@HomesteadEngineering Well, we're just about as north as you can be for continental US (7mi to BC border), in trees... solar isn't too likely. I think my two biggest pain points in my plan now are a) running more than 25' from the ST Switch (the extender cord isn't available so I'd have to make my own) b) powering the fridge and others and running cables without leaving a window/door open and c) deciding how to route propane lines...

    One way i am thinking about modifying this is to hook up indoors (in the garage) with a General manual transfer switch (that would be fed by the 240 generator outlet and the house mains). The Westinghouse ST switch outlet will connect to a relay that would trip/select either the Gen or Mains power from the manual switch. This way you are able to set it up with the other breaker points for more use ion the house and leverage the auto start and stop functionality that would otherwise be useless for a whole home standby setup. What are thoughts about this?

    Here are the rules about portable generator safety: make sure you are aware of all the warnings before using portable generators. This is just a reminder for everyone’s safety. All generator safety rules should be followed carefully. This advice is just to make sure that everyone is aware of all the warnings and it’s just to remind people to be careful using portable generators. Generators can be dangerous if not used carefully. Every year, hundreds of people die or get injured when using portable generators due to carbon monoxide poisoning and electrocution. Make sure you are using your generator carefully and keeping others safe as well. There is something very serious that everyone should always be aware of when using generators. Some people do run their generator indoors which is not safe and that increases the risk of carbon monoxide poisoning which can cause death of family and you. Some people run their generator in wet conditions which can electrocute them. Please remember that you should never run your generator indoors. Remember that carbon monoxide is an odorless and colorless gas that you cannot see or smell. Carbon monoxide is a silent killer. Keep that in mind. Make sure your generator is 15-20 feet away from your house and away from doors, windows, and vents. Never use your generator in your porch too. Having a carbon monoxide detector is very important against generator safety. Some people also allow children to go near the portable generator which could pose risks. We need to keep an eye on our children making sure that they are not near the portable generator so they won’t get electrocuted or burned by the generator which is dangerous. A locking enclosure also keeps kids safe. A generator shed might look like a tempting place to explore, or take cover during a game of hide and seek, but a generator is a dangerous piece of equipment that can cause injury. It says on the manual that we should also keep children away at all times from the portable generator to avoid injuries. Please do not allow a child or unqualified people to operate the portable generator. It is important to keep your children safe especially little ones. The portable generator can be hot during an operation. Just because some manuals missed what should be listed doesn’t mean it’s safe to do. Always follow the generator safety rules when using portable generators. Generators pose electrical risks. If you need to use your generator during wet weather, you need a generator tent to protect your generator from getting wet. Don’t let your generator get wet. Keep your generator dry and before using your generator, please make sure your hands and your generator is dry. Do not wear loose clothing when operating the generator. Everything that is said on the generator’s operating manual should not be ignored. Never smoke cigarettes near the generator. Please keep flammable things away from the generator. Never overload your generator too. Your generator can catch fire. Never ever try to plug a generator cord into a wall outlet to avoid back feeding. Back feeding your generator is dangerous. Always turn on your generator first before plugging in appliances and shut off the appliances before turning your generator off. Use a heavy duty cord for your generator and the cord should not be worn out. All the instructions should be followed carefully. Never refuel your generator while it’s running. It can cause fire if fuel spills while your generator is hot. You should turn off your generator and let it cool off before refueling it. Having a fire extinguisher next to the generator is also important. This is only a reminder for everyone’s safety of using generators. Make sure your generator is properly grounded. Having a fire extinguisher next to the generator is also important against the safety rules. kzread.info/dash/bejne/e2WetpV6fqi0pqw.html and here is a video more about keeping others safe when using generators and also about our family’s safety. It’s important to keep our little children safe as well. Make sure they’re away from the generator. Hope this helps. Thank you. Be safe

    Another good video, David. I should have watched this one first. I still would like a bulkhead connection to eliminate an open window. I just received the Reliance WKPBN30N, which gives me that advantage. I also noted that you said the utility connection to the ST Switch was to be non-GFIC. I see that as an added problem (or another cord through a window) since all of my exterior, garage, kitchen & basement receptacles are all CFIs. I do see the advantage (re: @sh839c and @Scott Sherfey ) that the gen would start, energize a few critical circuits, and allow you to then just throw the manual transfer yourself. For me, I would have several UPS alarms waking me up anyway. If I was home in bed, a key fob gen start and the whole-house MTS would be satisfactory.

    I think I figured something out. The GE smart switch does not connect to the main panel but to a heater or AC. Connecting to an outlet from the wall outlet (receptacle) the GE Smart Switch will detect if the power should go off. The Data cable will inform the generator that the power is off. Then the outlets on the GE smart Switch will kick the generator on and will power any item up to 20 amps on its outlets. My main concern is that I would like a little heat delivered to the plumbing during the cold spells when are not at our home. Now I would still need a Transfer switch to connect the 50 amps to the main panel and give more power to other devices .

    Yes, I've seen that device for sale on Amazon as well. It seems like a neat little device. However, I think its a shame that it doesn't support the full abilities of the L-14-30 connection, only 2-120V outlets breakered to 20-amps, is most certainly wasting that connections abilities. I have the Westinghouse 7500-watt generator, and I purchased one of those L-14-30 twist lock distribution cables to 4-120V outlets. This way I can power a space heater or AC unit on one leg, and a fridge and microwave on the other leg, as well as some lights.

    @@HomesteadEngineering CO2 is complicated and deadly if miscalculated. CO2 is heavier than air BUT it also has a density to temperature ratio. So the hot exhaust gas will allow the CO2 to rise, possibly into the attic of a house, but then as it cools it settles out of the hot air and seeks a lower level, by then colorless and odorless. So many people run generators in drafty garages that are at lower elevation than their house, but all it takes is a wind shift and the always safe practice to turn deadly. We can tolerate CO2 many times higher than normal but it is quick death when over those, submariners operate in subs that are 5 times plus normal.

    Hello Rick, Most generators in this class are loud and yes it will wake up the neighbors if they are 30 feet away. You might try sharing the power with them so everyone gets along. Maybe they supply the gas. It will not auto switch the fuel. You will have to do that manually. You can learn more here: kzread.info/dash/bejne/mm2q2NVrmc-7edI.html

    Good observation. I immediately thought of how I could do just that. However, most transfer switches are manually operated. I have a Westinghouse 7500DF that also has remote start. I have a 50 amp outlet on my house connected to a Generac 50 amp manual transfer switch mounted inside the house. With the Easy Start, it would automatically start with the loss of grid power and provide power to it's 20 amp outlet. after that, I can simply switch the transfer panel over to generator power. This Easy Start switch will provide one more layer of power continuity for critical items like a fridge and maybe a small space heater (where all of your freezable water pipes are) when you are away from home. At home, you simply do the transfer of power on your transfer switch yourself which then powers all of the circuits that are connected to it. If your generator only has the one 30 amp outlet, you would be limited. With a larger generator, you can plug in both the 30 amp and the 50 amp power cords.

    Correct me if I’m wrong, here, but it looks like this ATS just monitors a single circuit and makes decisions about the presence/absence of utility power based on that criteria alone. So, theoretically, if your “utility circuit” trips for a reason besides power outage (bad GFCI, defective breaker, overload, etc.) the generator starts. If you had an appliance plugged into the ATS output - at that point -you’d be then back-feeding and introducing generator power onto the utility lines which could do anything from damaging your other appliances to killing a utility worker. Am I looking at this correctly? How did Westinghouse get this product approved?

  • @HomesteadEngineering

    @HomesteadEngineering

    11 ай бұрын

    Its a transfer switch. So it only feeds the outlet on the box itself. The power to the outlet on the box will be either powered by the utility or the generator. It will not back-feed the line. Now, if you were to hook the 30A or 50A output directly into your panel without using a transfer switch, then you could have a BIG problem.

  • @Infamous363

    @Infamous363

    Ok, yes I see now that it’s feeding individual appliances and not the bus bars on the breaker panel. From a safety standpoint that makes sense, but what practical purpose is served, then? Doesn’t manually changing an appliance from utility to standby defeat the whole purpose of the ATS?

But using a transfer switch like this with a 2kw maximum capacity on a 5.3kw generator, let alone a 9500 or 1200w generator, just seems wasteful. One way I might use this would be to plug the switch into the 30 amp outlet and use it as described in this video. At the same time you could plug a manual transfer switch into the 50 amp outlet. The manual transfer switch would power your entire panel although the generator may not be capable of powering everything at the same time. So the power goes out, the switch starts the generator and the fridge and other stuff on the switch are automatically backed up. Upon noticing the power is out you could then just manually switch the manual transfer switch over and power your panel. I am not sure this would work as I have not tried it yet. ⚠️Please don’t forget to follow the generator safety tips whenever you use your portable generator. This is a very important announcement for everyone. This is just a reminder for everyone’s safety. All generator safety rules need to be followed carefully Generator safety tips: 1) KEEPING OTHERS SAFE: Please do not allow an unqualified person or your children to operate and service the portable generator. Just because some manuals don’t say that doesn’t mean it’s safe. That is important against the generator safety rules. We also need to be keeping an eye on our children too. You need to make sure that your children are not playing near the portable generator especially when it’s running so they won’t get electrocuted. Generators pose electrical risks and they can be hot during an operation. Please keep your children away from the portable generator at all times. It is important to keep our children safe especially our little ones. Children often get curious about anything so we should keep an eye on them to also make sure they’re not wandering towards the generator. 2) WHERE TO RUN YOUR GENERATOR: Some people use their portable generators indoors which increases the risk of carbon monoxide poisoning. It’s important to have a carbon monoxide if you have a gas generator. Never ever use your generator indoors even if your doors and windows are open and even in the garage is not safe to use a portable generator. Not even at your porch and your deck. It is never safe to use your generator indoors and in enclosed areas of your home. Your generator needs to be 15-20 feet away from your house. 3)🔥FIRE HAZARDS: Never refuel your generator while it’s running. You need to let your generator cool off before refueling it and before storing your generator. Never overload your generator too. Never ever back feed your generator. You should never plug your generator into a wall outlet. Also never store propane tanks indoors. Please keep flammable things away from the generator as well and please don’t smoke cigarettes near the generator. Having a fire extinguisher next to the generator is also important against the generator safety rules. 4) GENERATOR OPERATION: make sure your hands are dry before touching the generator. Never use your generator in wet conditions. Don’t let your generator get wet. You need a generator tent if you need to use your generator during wet weather. Please don’t wear loose clothes when operating the generator. Turn on your generator before plugging in appliances. Use the right cord for your generator. Please do not use worn out cords. kzread.info/dash/bejne/e2WetpV6fqi0pqw.html and here is a video more about keeping others safe when using generators. All generator safety rules should be followed carefully. Hope this helps.

    Hello cmh31909, I do not have the pinout for this. I am not so sure that it would be trivial even if I did. There may be some hand shake protocols and other commands involved that you would also need to replicate. For example, I think there may be an electric fuel pump that has to be activated. Thanks!

    Not a bad idea. Note: you can use this in conjunction with the 30A or 50A output to a manual switch. That said, building an automatic switch that runs off the 50A circuit would be better. Let me know how that goes. Thanks!

    Hey these generators are ok and need to be frequently shutdown after so many hours of use and oil needs changing. They are not what they call 100 percent duty cycle. They don’t even have pressurized lubricant or a oil filter. If this item really works it’s a plus for these generators

    Incidentally, I bought that "gimmy" Amazon. But before I understood what it really does. For I thought it" transferred" the entire power; from the Generator; into the Electrical Panel. But then I learned that it; ONLY uses a couple' of 20 Amp items. To me that is silly. To take a Generator capable of (often) power (60 Amps) of the entire house. So what in the world is a few lamps, when the outside Power goes out, etc. Huh? So I cancelled it before it was shipped. Thanks Jesus! I saved $300.00, no less!

    Power can be off for 48 hours and you wont loose any food in fridge. But you have to be smart enough NOT to open fridge door. You learn that trick by owning an RV/camper. Very rarely will you loose residential power for more than 48 hours. Loosing power to your furnace for 48 hours during winter could be catastophic via frozen water/sewer pipes and frozen bodies/pets. Protect your entire home vs. frridge. Hook up that auto transfer outlet to furnace!

    Joel, I just ran a freezer test and I found that stuff starts to melt around 7-8 hours in. Still partially frozen after 24hrs but would probably need to be taken out and cooked up at that point. NotMe, you can run any number of devices up to 20A off the ST Switch. You can also run off the 30A or the 50A circuit via a manual transfer switch at the same time. There are a lot of ways to use this depending on your situation.

    Honestly, does anyone actually buy these things? He just hooked up a 10K+ generator to the thing to get 2 110 sockets at 20A. An auto transfer setup is great to have, but not for a "portable" generator, and especially not for a generator that sized to only power 20A. Other thing, his ending of how it could be useful, if you abandon your house during a hurricane and run the extension cords to get this all setup, pretty sure the generator will run out of gas since it was bad enough where you evacuated and won't be back any time soon (where even if you set it up to run off of the natural gas line, it will run out of oil and be done,) or, someone will have stolen the generator you left behind (and the food in the fridge/freezer it was powering before they took it.)

    Sean, Hooking up this switch to run the auto transfer 20A circuit does not preclude the use of the rest of the generator, its just an added feature. People have all kinds of situations where this may be beneficial.
