Westinghouse Dryer Motor Bearing Hack worn 003
Rotating motor 90 degrees on cradle allows the pulley to be parallel to the cradle again. About all the bronze bushing wear was vertical at the top. Rotating the motor as an experiment had the unit starting well since the shaft was using an unused unworn area of the bushing.
This 43 year old motor went under salt water in Katrina in 2005 and was washed in a bathtub then and lubricated with Mobil 1 5W-30 motor oil. Worn bronze bushing causes pulley to be tilted upward. Belt thus rides to edges of pulley and idler pulley.
1976 Westinghouse electric dryer. 43 years old.

Awesome. This may get me enough time until I can afford to replace. Thank you so much.
Great video....exactly what I was looking for!
Also Looks like the rubber motor mounts have moved off center by a good 3/16 closer to the motor top bc of the continuous tension of belt. It'd only affect the belt life time, slippage etc. Doesn't look like there's a replacement for motor mounts.
In the very beginning of the video the motor was switched on a few times but not rotating - what caused that? I think the same thing is happening with my dryer - replaced the rear bearing, top front felt w/ plastic guides, so the drum rotates easily……but I still get that humming noise and no start-up sometimes, and when it does run I have excess vibration still.
How long did the hack last? We have a 20+ year old Maytag dryer that started doing this. We got it for $100 some years ago and spending $400 for a new motor is out of the question.
Thank you Good Sir!
Thank you for this video! I rotated the motor and it's working fine now. Since it's been 3 years have you replaced this motor or is it still working?
Who’s awesome? Your awesome!!!!!
Can't you just replace the bearing?

Tried it. Does not work.
