I grew up in Westfield and hated it. Still do.

What happened to the A&P there? Best memories were of walking to the train station and getting a round-trip ticket into the city for under $8 on a Saturday... leave the car home, get a cab and walk around NYC. But the price of living there (NE NJ generally) was crazy.

I grew up in Westfield in the '60s and '70s, it was a great place to live then. My parent's backyard was Tamaques Park, a great source of entertainment for teenagers. The public screwl system was great and the Jolly Trolley was still there. No way could I live in that yuppie hell-hole today.

As a Westfield resident myself, I feel like it's crumbling. The rents are so high, that most of those businesses are gone, and the are countless vacant shops and stores. The Rialto movie theatre just shut down because of an ownership dispute. Lots of other buildings are being knocked down and replaced with luxury apartments. One of these days, it might turn into a ghetto ghost town, since nobody can afford the rents to keep the businesses up and running. The real-estate is also very pricy. My parents were extremely lucky to get a good house in a good area for less than four hundred grand.

Grew up there, hated it. Arrogant rich assholes for the most part. You were defined by your address and income. We literally lived in the first house next to Clark because it was cheaper, even in the 50's. Great school system though, the reason my folks moved there. Graduated in 70 and left forever in 71. Good riddance IMHO.
